Irish Rowing Silver Medal Interview
Rowing brothers Paul and Gary O'Donovan are a little disappointed to be missing out on the celebrations back home in Ireland sparked by their rowing success at the Rio Olympics.
The O'Donovans secured their country's first medal in rowing and first of the 2016 games on Saturday (NZ time), taking silver in the men's lightweight double sculls.
While revelling in the success in Rio, the pair have delighted many with their post-race interview which covered things such as peeing in a cup for doping tests, being hungry and wanting to eat Nutella and some disappointment at missing out on celebrations in Ireland.

And particularly from Counties Cork and Kerry in the very southwest where there is a continuum of accents running east to west which become noticeably different from each other even over a distance of just 30 or 40 km. These two come from Skibbereen, which is somewhere in the middle of this continuum, so your ears are right to recognise some similarity with Jamaican accents.

Their accent is similar to the Jamaican accent, which makes sense because many of the slave masters in Jamaica were Irish, from what I was told by my grandmother long ago. I'm originally from the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia and I've always noticed how the Jamaican accent and the Irish accent sounded a bit similar. As a result, I can understand most of what they're saying,as I have Jamaican relatives.

"Lads listen, Paul what has the last few hours been like for you?" "Ehm... I've been shooken up now to be honest since the race. Bit tired now and the legs are like jelly. But ehm... yeah I suppose we did a bit of celebrating, and did the podium thing and got to put on the podium pants (?) as well so that was quite nice. And ehm, saw the mother and the father and a few other people, took a few pictures and that. And then ehm... I had to go and do this doping control thing so I was there for an hour or two, trying to take a pee into a cup for them so ehh... I'm after about ten litres of water as well, so ehm... bit full up now to be honest. Gary's had great craic though, hasn't he?" "Yeah, he's been busy there and I was running around having a great time, signing photographs and autographs and taking pictures. Tis all well and good, you know? We'll be fairly tired now, we haven't had a bite to eat since ehh... since ehh... two hours--" "After the weigh-in." "After the weigh-in we had a bread roll with some Nutella. I'm fairly hungry now, but I believe they're on their way with some pizzas for us ... Ah, I suppose we haven't had much time to think about it. You know, it's been a bit of a circus since we finished the race. But ehm, ah y'know we're just taking it all in and trying to enjoy it the best we can at the minute." "And Paul, are you aware of what's been going on back home?" "I heard that, yeah. Gary got a Snapchat there earlier and they were roaring away mad or something ehm... But no I haven't a clue what's going on to be honest at home. I'd say there's mad excitement altogether." "Tis a pity we're missing the whole thing out here!" "Yeah! They're all in the pub at home and... Skibreen's after closing down and that on holiday or something... and we're missing it all."
