    I (an American) was the guest of an Irish family in Dublin as part of a college program in the 70's. Irish people sing EVERYWHERE - our tour director sang, of course we went to Irish pubs with lots of singing, and when friends got together they played...singing games!!!! Great nation of people!!

    They conquered the world... with their pubs and hating the English. Mainly hating the English. It was popular for a time and people bought in. Was a time two thirds of the globe sported the British Red on the maps. Ireland fought back and won away. I expect some other victims have done something as well. Ireland will always be remembered for beating the English and not for any cereals!

    To anyone wondering what the bleedin ‘ell the “captian’s daughter” is; its another name for the Cat o’ nine tails a type of whip designed for severe punishment and was last used by the Royal Navy in 1848.

  • @lachlanlandreth9069

    @lachlanlandreth9069

    4 жыл бұрын

    That or when they say "Have you ever seen the captains daughter?" it was a jeer at how unattractive the daughter is. As the Bosun (in charge of the rigging, and rank above all the deck crew) was the one who would actually serve the punishment, as they were usually the strongest and hardiest crew member. It also helped maintain the Bosun's authority.

    It's up for the North to decide, they want to be British so that's what they are. ricemango...The tune maybe but the lyrics are all about Royal Navy discipline and there were plenty of Irish sailors in the Royal Navy, and they would of taken it back to Ireland. And the the English are (despite what you may believe) all about drinking and singing too. Is there a more Irish song than Danny Boy ? Another Irish folk tune with an Englishman’s lyrics.

    I'm so glad I had a chance to see these purveyors of Irish humor, tears and music from the beginning. Even though it's long past their performing days, seeing this reminds me of what fun we had in their early days in Toronto. ~Much loved & well missed you scoundrels all, alive & dead.

    These magnificent musicians came to Australia in the late 70s or early 80s and released an album called "The Irish Rovers in Australia". Many fabulous songs, but one they changed the lyrics for our country was "come by the hills"... It was amazingly adapted, and something very special.

    Almost every time we had a thunderstorm when I was a child the power would go out. To keep me from ever getting scared my Dad and I would sit on the porch. He would grab his guitar and this would be one of the songs we would sing. I thought "shave his belly with a rusty razor" was hilarious. I still love thunderstorms to this day.
