Even though I'm English I grew up watching American Football, and it's plays like these that remind me why I love the sport

Just a little spoken thought, Julio Jones of the Atlanta Falcons (#11) once won a state championship in the Triple Jump with a pulled hamstring. I was the field judge. I memory serves, he medaled in the High Jump the same day. Amazing athlete, just amazing. Wish they had shown one of his catches. (two feet down in bounds with the ball is a catch btw).

Snow, rain, wind, fog... doesn't really matter unless the weather is life-threatening. The record standing vertical jump at the NFL Combine (evaluating potential rookies) is 46" or 1.17 meters. Best place to learn the rules is the football playlist at the channel TheOnDeckCircle. Short, east to understand videos.

In the end zone, the tip of the ball has to break the plane of the goal line. The goal line extends forever, so as long as you had possession and crossed the "line" before any part of you touches the ground out of bounds it counts.

Sort of, the ball has to be inside or hit the pylons (the orange rectangles) if you possess the ball prior to crossing the line, compared to catching the ball which can be outside the lines as long as your two feet/knee/bum hit in bounds prior to any body part hitting out of bounds first.

As a kid in Pittsburgh in the 1970s my favorite player was Lynn Swann who was famous for his jumping and agility. He credited his background in dance, ballet in particular, for a lot of his athleticism. There's a great bit of television out there of Lynn Swann doing ballet on Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood.

As a kid in the 90's it was Steve Young for me

A few years back, an NFL player made a tv series, about sports around the world. He would go to a foreign country, practice with an established team in a sport he never played, and then compete in that sport. He even went to Ireland, and played field hockey. His name is Dhani Jones.

Quite a while back, the quarterback for my local team threw a pass,, it got batted in the air, he caught it himself, and ran it in for a touchdown. He threw a touchdown to himself!

Diane, if you want to see crazy weather for a game you should look up the 1967 NFL Championship Game, AKA the Ice Bowl. At game time it was -25°c.

Fun Fact: Elephants are the only mammal that cannot jump. Which is a good thing, because you wouldn't want to play leapfrog with an elephant. 😂😂😂

American Football is a winter sport, however some stadiums have roofs, and the Southern states rarely have snow.

Football is almost never stopped for weather. Lightening is the one thing that will stop a game. There have been some games that became legendary for the weather that they were played in.

'Bullet' Bob Hayes played for the Dallas Cowboys 1964-74. Just prior to that, he was (and in one category still is) the fastest man in the world, winning gold in the 1964 Olympics. And, to go along with that, during the 205 Combine a cornerback by the name of Byron Jones demonstrated his standing long jump (broad jump) and hit 3.73 meters, or 12 feet 3 inches. That, *accidentally*, broke a world record that had stood since 1968 and still stands today.

4:11 - the reason that was an athletic play was because the kick returner was leveled by the place kicker. In case you didn't know, the kicker is always the smallest most unathletic guy on the team. He has one job, and that is to kick. Field goals, extra points, and kickoffs. And they usually have zero chance of tackling a bigger stronger player at full speed. So for a puny kicker to not only tackle, but level a ball carrier is extremely rare.

Diane, at 6:57, you turned your head away and missed one of the best plays in the video. Unfortunately they only showed a couple seconds on replay.

You said a couple of times about switching places with the cheerleaders. We have a high school tradition here where the girls from the senior class (12th grade) play football against the girls of the junior class (11th grade) for one game in the fall. Not just cheerleaders. Most high schools include the players from the football team provide cheerleading and (if the school has them) Dance team. (In full drag.) As a Junior, I played right guard, and for powderpuff got talked into being a dance leader. (The real dance team was the Desertaires, our version was the desperate-aires.)

Great reaction, love watching your reactions to sports. These men are elite athletes which some seem to have superhero powers. Many of them don't have long careers.

For anyone not familiar with an America Football field, the jump at 7:29 was from almost 6 meters out.

If you want snow check out the Colts vs. Bills snow game. It was too late in the season to reschedule, so they played during a blizzard in 6+ inches of snow.

I love seeing this. I see so many Europeans piss on American Football and they call it a wimpy sport and saying the Rugby is far superior. But then folks like you and even some folks down under in Australia or New Zealand start watching this videos and then they suddenly have more respect for the sport of American football which is also called Gridiron football in some countries. I really appreciate that you can appreciate our sport.

"You would have thought that the pitch is heated" - OMG! The 'field' is not heated, and they play football in the rain, mud, snow, a blizzard, any kind of weather.

Loved your reaction to snow. Most NFL stadiums are still outdoors. Which, is the way it should be played! I personally don't like the gymnastics as it leaves the player open for serious injuries if they land wrong.

At :40 what happened was he got up without using his knees, legs and barely using his hands. That takes massive core strength and strong hamstrings.

It's really amazing how some of those big, muscular guys can launch themselves in the air like that! And some of those hits make you cringe. And, as always, I love Diane's reactions!

Some of the newer fields have pipes underneath that keep the ground warm but football is often played in the snow, sleet and rain. But those conditions in baseball often cause a delay or even a postponement.

@@iceman34 I started doing this because Diane was planning her new channel but needed 'watch hours' and other types of activity to qualify. Some of the other Patrons _(yourself included, I think)_ ran playlists. I thought I would try reminding viewers to 'like' the videos, leave notes about the _buy-a-coffee_ link, Patreon, etc. Now it is just fun trying to get here as quickly as possible and dropping in a reminder. I have a few saved in a text file. I just pick one and modify it a little each week. I hesitate to suggest that everyone leave a comment, even if just a 'thanks'. It does count for KZread activity, but the first hour is already a nightmare for Diane. I'm not sure I want to make it worse.

The snow game was in Denver Colorado, the team is the Broncos and they often play in the snow there.

Free advice Diane. If you ever visit America in the Autumn, I highly recommend you view a game at a local sports bar. College Football-Saturdays and Pro Football-Sundays.

A lot of the extended reaching is due to the rules; which is what makes it amazing that they can focus on a catch at the same time determining their situation and what edge they need to score or keep the ball for their team. A team has to give up the ball if they cannot move it 10 yards towards their opponents' goal line in 4 plays. So a lot of this stretching and jumping came because they new how close they were to that 10 yard mark. This also goes for the scoreline; the player doesn't need to get his entire body to break the plane of the goal line, just the nose of the ball breaking that plane will score a touchdown (6 points). How they keep that in their head as they get hit around is phenomenal.

Happy Friday Diane! Many of the NFL stadiums these days are domes, so they aren't affected by the weather. But there are still some no dome places like Chicago, Detroit and some others that still play in the snow. Snow football is the best!

I remember, as a kid, almost 60 years ago, that there would be snow on the field in stadiums up here in Canada during football season once in a while and pretty damn cold even if there wasn't snow. Very few stadiums were covered 50 some years ago. It had to be pretty bad before they canceled the game. I mean like wind and blowing snow, the fans all have 'heat' in their thermos and blankets on their knees. I remember the Grey Cuo played in snow once in the '60s. Cool to someone not understanding the game yet taking notice of the skill and abilities these athletes have.

Most NFL stadiums are still open to the elements, there's only 7 or 8 that have closed domes.

In high school a lot of football players run track in field in the spring, so a lot of them probably were high and long jumpers before as well as footballers.

There are still several outdoor stadiums and the teams do play in snow, rain, and mud.

In Southern highschools we have a day called Powderpuff where the football team dresses like cheerleaders and the cheerleaders play football.

A few rules clarifications for you. In the case that a player exhibits control and possession of the ball prior to crossing the goal line all that is necessary is maintaining that control until the ball crosses the goal line (the "0" yard line or the demarcation of the start of the end zone) while also still inbounds in order to count as a touchdown. the mere moment the ball crosses the imaginary plane made by the goal line the play is considered over and the team on offense is awarded 6 points. If instead a receiver catches a ball thrown legally to him in the end zone and past the goal line, he must be downed inbounds which among other arcane criteria almost always means both feet touched the end zone. It can be a knee, elbow or hip if I am not mistaken, though these rules are so seldom used I am a bit rusty on them. Their helmets are very well padded, helps a lot for the everyday land on your head type action.

The snow-game was in Denver's Mile High Stadium, which is an outdoor venue played on grass. In fact, I may have been at that game! Denver Broncos games sell out, no matter the weather.

I guess these plays help explain the popularity of football in the states. Some of those guys are exceptional athletes. You seemed so surprised at how graceful those big guys can be😳. Belly rubs for Chewie. Boop!

Diane, the NFL is played in rain, snow, winds, mud, what have you. It takes a huge weather event to shut down an American football game, mainly because it's so ridiculously expensive to put on and televise. There's literally almost no room for error when the league sets up its schedule, which is a major factor in its "the show must go on" attitude. The other thing that enters into the decision to play whatever the weather might be is the fact that America, being as huge as it is, has sometimes extreme weather patterns that the locals are quite used to. Example: when I was growing up in the northeast, we kids played football (and other sports) in every kind of weather and thought nothing of it. It was simply done because we enjoyed it, not because we were in a league or anything. In fact, when I was at Syracuse University--a place that often has DEEP snow--we used to play full-contact tackle football in the snow, with no padding except for our coats and hats. It was the snow that deadened the hits and made things safer, since it was often more than a foot deep. Believe it or not, there were times when the girls would come out and play with us, and they LOVED it, because they could play proper rough football and not have to worry about getting hurt--that's how much of an equalizer the snow was. So, it's not unusual here for the players to go out there and perform, whatever weather pattern is swirling around their heads. BTW, there are great videos of the NFL in crazy conditions here on YT, check them out when you can when you want a good laugh.

American football is probably the most exciting game on the planet. Action, strategy, feats of strength, it's such a spectacle and there's something for everyone

If two parts of the body touch the green section of field (right foot/left foot or right foot/ left elbow) prior to the rest of the body going out of bounds, it is considered a catch in the end zone... Therefore a score.

The rules for scoring are that the ball has to break the plane of the goal line while in an offensive player's possession & control (e.g. he has to be controlling the ball at the moment it breaks the plane) so the whole ball doesn't have to make it into the end zone to score. If a receiver is catching a pass in the end zone, he has to control the ball long enough to get two feet down in bounds. (If he drags his toes along the ground as he's sailing out of bounds, that counts.)

They're fast and very strong. Many of them benchpress 300 plus lbs multiple times.

American football is the most unique display of athleticism you'll ever see. Everybody is either really big, really fast, or really strong. There's a player named Alex Collins who does Irish dancing to improve his footwork. Just an example of what players do to be the best of the best. Lynn Swan used to do ballet. When defenses practiced for Barry Sanders, they would chase chickens, or so I was told.

With the exception of when the teams are both lined up very close to the scoring line/end zone and catching the ball from a throw, most of the time players are not trying to jump. The most exciting clips in this video were when someone was evading a tackle by jumping, because it was done “on the fly” and not part of a purpose- built play. You can’t really practice for it because it takes a lot of experience to know when to try such a crazy thing. Most would rather keep both feet (or 1) on the ground and move unexpectedly that way. Once a human being is in the air, there’s very little that can be done to change trajectory.

"I would have thought the pitch was heated or something." -- there are more and more indoor arenas but many(most?) are actually outdoor facilities and you play no matter what the weather. They only stop if the weather gets too extreme like heavy rain, lightning, hail, or whiteout.

If they heat the field (pitch) in the snow, the field (pitch) turns to mud.

Snow! Years ago I was at a Chicago Bears playoff game and it was snowing sideways with below freezing temperatures. We could hardly see the players on the field or feel our feet!

BTW, We also spent a couple of hours tailgating in the parking lot before that game. Also... I've been to a few Chicago Cubs baseball home openers where the cold wind whipping around Wrigley Field felt like winter instead of spring.

A problem with trying to melt the snow on a very cold day is that this makes ice which is even more dangerous to play on.

You've mentioned some understanding of Rugby in the past so this might help: TD in Football requires the same thing as a Try in Rugby but you don't have to touch the ball to the ground. Also since football allows the forward pass, catching a pass in the opponent's end zone counts the same as running it in. End Zone = In Goal Area Field Goal similar to Drop Goal. Drop-kicking the ball is legal in both sports, but rarely used in football, as football allows place kicking which is more accurate. In addition an American football is more suited for throwing, but less suited for kicking, compared to a Rugby football Sideline, on the line = out of bounds. Same is true for the end line (back of the end zone) Completion: Receiver catches the ball, and gets both feet (NFL) in bounds, or any other part of the body other than the hand. For College Football you only need 1 foot or any other body part other than the hand. Note that the wrist is part of the hand, not part of the arm. The ball can touch the ground and still be a completed pass provided the receiver is in full control of the ball before it touches the ground, and the above conditions have been met. If a player is falling out of bounds, while in the act of catching the ball, he must control the ball, then get both feet (or other body part beside the hand) in bounds. He must then maintain control of the ball all the way through contact with the ground.

I’m not much into the NFL but those were some amazing plays.

American football is played from September to the championship (Super Bowl) in February. While there are many domed stadiums now than in the past, there are still many that get snowed on from mid- November to the end of the season as they are open air stadiums. During the championship rounds (called the "playoffs) if these open air stadium teams host the game, they normally have an advantage because they are used to playing in the weather. There were no domed stadiums prior to 1965, so there were games in December and January where the ambient temperature was 15 below zero (-25 Celsius). And there was a game played with a wind chill down to 40 below zero (40 below is the same temperature in both farenheit and celsius). Nowadays, they probably would postpone such a game. The Super Bowl is normally played in a warm weather stadium in southern California, Florida, or Louisiana. A few of them have been played in domed stadiums in the north (Detroit, Minneapolis, Indianapolis). New York City has only hosted one, as they have only open air stadiums in that city. They were lucky; the temperature was unusually warm and it actually rained.

American football is a fall/winter sport, so snow is common. most of the fields ( we don't call them a pitch) are not under any dome or roof. so even modern games are often played in harsh weather. and unlike most sports even here in the U.S. do not stop for weather. so you will see them play in heavy snow, rain and wind. for the one where you asked if it counted. as long as 1 body part lands in bounds before something touches out of bounds it counts. so the specific one you asked about, his foot touched in bounds before his hand hit the out of bounds line.

When games are played in the snow, it's the most fun for the players, and usually the fans as well. Snow games in the NFL are iconic, and some of the best individual performances we have seen have happened in the snow. The NFL will play in just about any condition. Snow, torrential monsoons, very high wind, arctic cold snaps, even grey out fog, it doesn't matter. The only time the NFL will regularly postpone or suspend a game is due to lightning. There have been games that have been postponed or moved due to hurricanes and blizzards, but that's pretty rare, and it's not necessarily because the players couldn't play in those conditions, but because the logistics of the game get so screwed up. Games have also been moved or postponed a few times due to infrastructure issues, like when the Viking's dome stadium roof collapsed due to very heavy snow the night before a home game was to be played.

Funny thing, the NFL did have a small Europe league in the late 90s/early 2000s. There were teams in London, Edinburgh, Barcelona, Dusseldorf, Amsterdam, Frankfurt en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFL_Europe

In Canadian Football (CFL), the field is longer and wider. There are also fewer downs per play. All that puts the ball in the air more often.

For future reference- if they are running with the ball only the ball needs to break the plane of the goal line for a touchdown. When catching a ball the receiver needs to control the ball and come down with both feet for it to be a legal catch, with some variations- one knee= two feet. One foot and an elbow, or hand, arm etc.
