IRISH GIRL MAKES A HURRICANE FOR THE FIRST TIME | Quarantine Cocktails at home with Ciara O Doherty

Ойын-сауық

In todays episode of Cocktails with Ciara, I'm making a the classic new Orleans Cocktail, the Hurricane! A beautiful summer rum-based cocktail, this drink was requested by my lovely Patreon supporter Mike Lenker. I was excited to try it myself for the first time, so let's see how I got on!
✨ Ingredients ✨
30 ml dark rum (I used appleton estate reserve blend)
30 ml light rum (I used appleton estate)
20ml passion fruit syrup (I used bols)
30 ml fresh orange juice
1/2 lemon juiced
20ml simple syrup
1-2 barspoons of grenadine
Maraschino Cherries and lemon slice to garnish
✨ Method ✨
Add all ingredients to a shaker.
Shake with ice.
Strain into a hurricane glass
garnish with maraschino cherries and an orange slice
More info:
The Hurricane cocktail was invented in New Orleans French Quarter at Pat O'Brien's bar during World War II when whiskey was hard to come by. The name for the drink came from the glass it's served in that resembles a hurricane lamp. There was a surplus of rum coming in from the Caribbean islands, and so required bars to buy multiple cases of rum for one case of whiskey. So to help use up this excess of rum, this drink was created.

    Popularized in Nola (at the Napoleon house most notably) but not invented here, similar to the bourbon or brandy milk punch. www.britannica.com/topic/Pimms-Cup

    @davidray6962

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@abgbdwlf I can't click through the link, but just what you said makes me think it's inaccurate - the Pimm's Cup is not a milk punch. A milk punch uses, unsurprisingly, milk. A Pimm's Cup not only does not use milk, but is not a punch in the traditional sense in that it is heavily herbaceous. Some have called it "a salad in a glass". There are milk punch drinks popular in NOLA, but they're not the Pimm's Cup.

  • @abgbdwlf

    @abgbdwlf

    @@davidray6962 what I meant was the milk punch was also not invented in New Orleans but many people think it was. The Pimps cup was invented in England in the 1830-1840’s which makes sense because the liquor was invented in London.

    If you're interested in summer drinks the Piña Colada is an obvious choice. There's a couple of variations of it, also. If you make it with vodka instead of light rum it becomes a Chi-Chi; there was also a restaurant chain called Darryl's that made the Piña colada with vanilla ice cream substituting for the usual ice, which made for a very smooth, milk-shake texture.

Our first night there at family dinner, Dad being dad snuck me my first proper beverage: The Tropical Lifesaver. It had A LOT of different types of booze and it tasted like fruit punch. Me being the inexperienced drinker at the time - took one sip, loved it and gulped down in 5 seconds. I was wrecked. Lucky my parents being awesome covered for me and told everyone I had heat stroke from the day. I slipped back to the hotel room and crashed.

    Back when I was in the Army and stationed at Fort Stewart outside of Savannah, Georgia there was a massive hurricane heading right for the city. They closed down the base and basically told us all to stay put as we would be called upon to help with disaster relief after the storm made landfall. A buddy of mine and I went into Savannah anyway to one of my favorite bars and they were having a special "Ride out the Hurricane with $2 Hurricanes". So we did and proceeded to get completely blitzed. Fortunately at the very last minute the storm veered back out to sea and we never even got any rain but damn if we didn't need our own disaster relief the next day.

    In my family, an evening cocktail, which I will name the Phyllis (after my mother) name is the following: 2 oz white rum, 2 oz orange juice, 2 ice cubes top up the tumbler with ginger ale, garnish with a maraschino cherry. To take a bit of sweetness out of it, ginger beer instead of ginger ale suits me just fine.

    Nice video you happened to stubble on a garnish of 3 cherries and a skewer made famous by Don the beachcomber back in the 1940’s for his Californian tiki bar. The meaning behind the garnish is Morse code for V (3 dots and a dash) as in victory during WWII. Tiki was huge in the 40’s for returning soldiers from the South Pacific hence the reason for the garnish

    Whiskey being in short supply during WW2? That reminds me of when I read somewhere that the UK bought the world's entire tea crop in WW2, seeing it as a vital war supply on par with bullets and oil.

    My Hurricanes include equal parts light rum, dark, rum, and 151 rum (no float, no on the side, mixed in), and 1/2 part Grenadine. Orange juice as you did, pineapple juice , no simple syrup, no lemon juice. Also I use crushed ice in the hurricane glass.

    Same. I still have my two Pat O'Brien's hurricane glasses and it was nearly 20 years ago when I went to New Orleans. I'm sure Mardi Gras is a blast but I was there for New Years myself. I went for the college football Sugar Bowl and we were on Bourbon Street every night drinking hand grenades. I had beignets at Cafe du Monde at 3AM one night when it seemed a good idea to get some alcohol absorbing food into my stomach. One evening though we went to Pat O'Briens to the piano bar and listened to music while we sipped our hurricanes. Delicious drinks. I really should try making one again too.

    Stunning as always. Good cocktail that I've consumed way too many. For another similar drink popular in the south you should try an Alabama Slammer. The Alabama Slammer might be the most ’70s of all the bright and fruity 1970s cocktails. Its base blend of amaretto, sloe gin and Southern Comfort stands in total defiance of what one would expect from a staunch Southern sipper. The Alabama Slammer is one of those drinks that, on paper, confuses. Southern Comfort (or SoCo, if you prefer) is a whiskey-based liqueur with notes of fruit and spice. Sloe gin is made from small, tart berries that grow wild in England, and amaretto is the sweet and nutty liqueur best known for its starring role in the Amaretto Sour. Those disparate ingredients are brought into alignment with the citrusy bite of orange juice and some welcome dilution that occurs when you shake everything together. (For the best results, squeeze a couple oranges for a fresher, better-tasting drink.) Said to have been born at the University of Alabama, the Slammer is a go-to at Crimson Tide tailgates, where it’s often served as a shot. And slamming one back certainly gets the point across. The nutty, herbal notes, backed by baking spices and citrus, come through loud and clear. But to truly appreciate the unique blend of ingredients that comprise the Alabama Slammer, shake the ingredients with plenty of ice and serve the drink in a tall glass. The flavors will loosen and unfold at a leisurely pace, leaving you with a mellower, more Southern-tasting drink. After an impressive run through the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, the Alabama Slammer has lost some of its appeal. But it remains a popular drink in parts of its home state and continues to find eager patrons at college bars across the country who appreciate its fruity flavor and heady effects. See what all the fuss is about by mixing one for yourself. At the least, it’s a lesson in synergy and a reminder that even the most discordant components can form a tasty, refreshing drink. Ingredients 1 ounce Southern Comfort 1 ounce sloe gin 1 ounce amaretto liqueur 2 ounces orange juice, freshly squeezed Garnish: orange wedge Steps Add Southern Comfort, sloe gin, amaretto and orange juice to a shaker with ice and shake until well-chilled. Strain into a highball glass over fresh ice. Or, if serving as a shot, divide among shot glasses. Garnish with an orange wedge.

    There's a little bar right on cocoa beach that makes great hurricane drinks. They have categories just like real hurricanes. 1 through 5 which I think refers to the number of shots in the drink. All I know is after two cat fives I can barely walk out of the place.

    you might have done it and it’s not especially summery, but my favorite cocktail is the Negroni - I made and drank them on the anniversary of Anthony Bourdain’s passing - his favorite too. Imho it’s so easy but so good - and the orange garnish (peel or slice) is not optional

    Fun fact about the whisky shortage is, it was caused by both sugar rationing, and most distilleries were converted to produce industrial strength alcohol that was used to make antifreeze, plastics, lacquer, medical supplies, smokeless gunpowder and even pesticide for use in the Southern Pacific. Add to that some of the distillery chemists being tapped to produce penicillin, and a labor shortage due to military service needs, and you get a whiskey shortage and a rum surplus. :-)

    Ciara and when you finally run out of new cocktails to try you can start in on all the different types of shots! 😂 I first learned about the Cement Mixer shot from my sister-in-law over Thanksgiving one year. It's become something of a tradition for us to drink Guinnesses one evening and accompany it on the side with some Bailey's. Not mixed, just as a side accompaniment. They just go well together. Well so anyway we had plenty of Bailey's handy. She was like, have you ever had a Cement Mixer? A shot of Bailey's in your mouth followed by a half shot of fresh lime juice in behind that, all in your mouth together. It's kind of a trick to play on someone in a way because the lime juice curdles the cream in the Bailey's in your mouth and well, you feel like you have a mouth full of cement! But, it actually tastes fantastic. Like a piece of lime cheesecake! 😀
