    I’m from Ireland but lived in Canada for two years so I have a comment to make about the service you get here in restaurants. It’s slower because we are European and dining out is an experience, not a conveyer belt. We go out to eat as an event to make a whole evening out of. I found that in North America, they try to get you in and out of the restaurant as fast as possible. Maybe because of the tipping culture in North America, more customers = more tips for the servers. But here, our servers are paid a decent wage plus tips (usually 10% per table). We like to sit and really relax at our meals so being rushed is considered very rude here. If your bill gets dropped to your table without you asking for it is a BIG no no! Very rude! We feel unwelcome and rushed. Just to explain that a little 🙂 hope you enjoyed your stay!

    America believes in cheap prices that is why restaurants can’t afford to have customers relaxing at their table.. 😁 Eating out is very common here in America that it is considered incredibly casual, normal, and common! 😁 So we like to keep our prices cheap so people would come more often and they believe they get more customers as well. I feel very bad for the servers here in America because they are paid insane;y cheap! Only if they increase the prices then the servers would get higher pay and dining would be a nice night out experience in America (:

    All the fish and roast potatoes! 😋 My ex is from Ireland, so when I went there, I stayed with his father. Bless him, he was so worried that I ate too much fish, and I was depriving myself of good food. The older generations didn't like fish. Fish is what you ate when you're not supposed to eat meat for religious reasons like on Fridays. I can't eat pork, so he made sure I had smoked salmon on buttered brown bread every morning, each of my visits! 😋😭

    It's true. Fish used to be a luxury food in Ireland. Historically most people in Ireland were poor so unlike other places with fishing cultures (like Spain)- fish never got that popular in the national cuisine. Old habits die hard- but fish is more popular now.

  • @maryfelton7733

    @maryfelton7733

    Sira Mea actually I think it was seen as the opposite of luxury food - meat was luxury - fish was on days that you ‘fasted & abstained’ as it was easy to get and free

  • @siramea

    @siramea

    That does make sense. I am in no way a food historian but I was reading recently on why fish was not traditionally consumed more in Ireland, especially during the famine, considering we were an island nation. The suggestion put forward in the article that fish at the time was a luxury item, it was more profitable to sell the fish and buy cheaper food than to keep for yourself (even then Ireland exported a lot of fish), so you didn't have it that often and so it wasn't part of the usual cuisine.

  • @maryfelton7733

    @maryfelton7733

    Sira Mea yea maybe that was part of it but I know my parents who grew up in 40s and grandparents thought of fish as a second rate option (we loved by the ocean so were able to get fish, cockles, mussels, periwinkles for free) Probably for many the option of selling was good? My mum talks more re catching and selling rabbits 😁

    He says phenomenal a lot in this vid, but the food I had in Ireland WAS phenomenal! One of my favorite dishes is duck, and in Donegal I think it was, I got duck stuffed with apple slices--it was delicious. Duck I've had in the US can be amazing, but seems to usually be sauced, so the addition of apples was delightfully original. Fish and chips was great, it felt good eating it when the fishing boats were literally across the street in one small town! Never saw or had chips with the full breakfast, just eggs, sausage, pudding sausage, etc--oh and bacon rashers which were SO good. I can't find them in the US! I had a burger with a bacon rasher on it, and even that was 'phenomenal.'

    2016 - had oysters in Galway that had been in the bay earlier in the day. The place was recommended by the barkeep at a pub by the train station in Galway. After the oysters i and two other guys in our tour hustled back to the pub for Galway ales and live music. The Bank, in downtown Dublin, it is in an old bank and the meat, cheese bacon, buns and potatoes were all locally sourced - possibly the best burger I ever had. And in Temple Bar is a place that sells Cornish pasties and they are open late to catch the bar crowd.

    Most places don't charge a service charge (in my experience). Some do, and some only do for large groups. Tips are always optional. If you are not into the traditional foods, there are lots of choices for modern dishes. You won't go hungry. Carvery lunch is also popular, sort of traditional, especially on a Sunday (some type of roast meat, vegetables, potatoes and gravy). The beef in Ireland is also very good. 3:45- Colcannon - you're pronunciation sounds ok, I would say 'Kul-can-en'.

Kind of ironic, but it tasted great anyway. It's rare to find bad food in Ireland, no matter what type of restaurant it is. 🍲🍛🍀🍀. Make sure you try out the cheese here - it's really amazing!

    Indian flag is the right colours 😉 Myself and my mate (also Irish) tried to get into a pub for food and beers for my birthday (Paddy's Day) in St.Petersburg in Russia. We had booked a table at another pub for the night but forgot to do so for our grub. We ended up in the Indian restaurant next door, the Green, White and Orange Indian Tricolour was Irish enough for us 😁

    Ahhh you made me so hungry for some Irish food. We have been twice and I still crave so many things. I do drink some delicious Irish tea everyday. Their vegetable soup was delightful and welcoming too. It was puréed, so that shocked me at first, but oh man the flavors were out of this world.

    I've noticed when you get away from tourist places, just about every restaurant menu in the Republic has some Italian dish at the top, usually spaghetti or lasagna (sometimes with brown gravy instead of tomato sauce). I asked an old guy about it at a diner once, and he only laughed before replying, "The Italians once ruled here back in the Roman days,; maybe they still do and we just don't know it."

  • @BriCanavan

    Not one single place I've ever been to has ever served spaghetti with a gravy sauce. There are a multitude of spaghetti dishes, Bolognese, carbonara etc,but no spaghetti is served with gravy. Also the Romans never riled here, they didn't invade here. It's probable they traded as some roman coins gave been found but they didn't invade or rule.

    Well done. Great review of our food. If you're getting fresh fish try to do it in fishing towns like Kinsale in the video, Howth in Dublin is another. There'll always be the best fish restaurants and fish and chip shops in places like this. Salmon will probably be good anywhere in the country, and fish pies too. Our fish is good, but it should be better given our great resources, home fish cooking isn't really in our national identity, but in those traditional fishing towns there really is nowhere better in the world.

    I would like to add that Food hygiene laws are extremely strict too, so you can be sure it’s good quality, also this is helped by the fact much of it is produced here. Also just to clarify, coffee culture here really has boomed and our coffee is stronger than that in the US, if you want the Diner style coffee ask for “filtered” which is usually cheaper otherwise you will be given european style coffee and there a big focus on “artisan” coffee and sand which shops, with all manner of wraps and salads, with usually a few veggie or vegan options to boot .Furthermore if you don’t like a pint with your meal, we love a glass of wine too, so much so that “wine O Clock” is seen as a health concern, as our media likes to constantly tell us about it. I don’t understand how we seem to be seen as living in the culinary dark ages, it really what you find in any modern european country however I use to live in the UK (not London but other “Large” cities) and travel frequently in Germanic countries and I feel like it’s much more “foodie” and experimental here especially when you compare our secondary cities to those in other countries. Even my rural town has a few decent places with all the “notion” food, to suit the most cosmopolitan of tourist yet you still will find the stuff we are famous for and if fast food is more your speed, don’t worry we have plenty of that too & often with our own Irish take on it.

    Yes but it really depends on the state. Some states, especially in the south like Texas, Louisiana, and Georgia the minimum wage is lower, however, in the states with a more expensive cost of living the minimum wage is much higher. I live in California and the minimum wage is $15 or about €12.60. California is one of the more expensive states to live with higher taxes and not everyone who lives here lives by the beach. But if you do happen to live by the beach its either because your sleeping in a multi-million dollar mansion in a gated community or your sleeping underneath a bridge. Just to give you a general idea of what taxes are like here I have a job that used to pay about $16.50 an hour and I was bring home around $1100 a paycheck. Eventually the warehouse I was working at were given raises and my pay went up to $20 an hour. That put me in a higher tax bracket. Now im making $1200 every paycheck which is basically only $100 more. Rents here where I live go for about $1250 to $2000 a month. Its kinda gay.
