IRIS AGATE JEWELRY!? Step-by-Step Silversmithing Open Backed Iris Agate Pendants from Scratch!

In this one, we take a pile of our smaller tumbled iris agate slabs and make silver settings for them by turning them into pendants! Due to the nature of iris agate, it does not lend itself well to jewelry; in order to capture the amazing rainbow that makes iris agate so special, light must be able to pass through the stone from the back meaning any ring or other closed setting will just kill your iris. With this method however, you can wear iris agates and show their full color off! These open backed settings are incredibly simple to make and can be used on a huge variety of stones, certainly not just iris agate. All you need is some silver bezel strip and some high gauge round silver wire and you are all set to get to started on these awesome settings that really allow the stone to shine! I hope this video is helpful, informative, or even just entertaining if you have no plans on making your own, and I will have another one out soon!

Those turned out just beautifully! It's hard to pick a favorite from those beautiful pendants but it would have to be either the one you liked best, the color is outrageous on that one, or the heart shaped one! Those all were so beautiful though! I wish you great luck and may your booth do awesome at the show, but I really want some leftover, because I want some for myself! Lol! Thanks Theo, for that wonderful demonstration of what you can do with iris agates! They are just so beautiful!

Well done, good sir. Quite the impressive display of the smithing. Definitely the one with all the color at the bottom. Reminds me of those "sands of time" motion art with the sand in the water with the bubbles inside the glass... only the iris agate is way cooler.

Ooooh! All those rainbows! Awesome job on those. Even without the flat lap, you still make beautiful things. My favorite is the larger tear drop shaped one with the quartz at the bottom. If I could get my hands on one of those, I'd definitely string it up as a suncatcher with some faceted glass or quartz beads to bring out all the beauty.

I’m not sure if it’s a good idea or not but if you ever do a longer more detailed video on this process I’d love to watch it! You always do such amazing work Theo! I’m really wanting to make stuff like this but I’m a bit nervous still. I need a few more tools but mainly I’m just nervous and not sure where to start. Is there a book maybe you could recommend? I have a mammoth ivory cab… Ashley wants it in a setting like this… I’m nervous 😆

Theo, I hope the gem show went well for you! Do you have any tips on how to identify which pieces might display iris, besides just cutting slabs and holding them up to the light? It seems I read years ago that you have to cut them very thin to display iris, but that must not be true, since yours don't seem abnormally thin! Edit: Doh! I just found your other iris video!
