Farsi was a major language in the Indian subcontinent for several hundred years. Despite Bengali having many words in common with Farsi, in Bengal, there are no longer any native speakers of Farsi. It is still taught in a few schools of Kolkata{state in India} as an optional subject.

Before British occupation of India Persian was the state language and all Indians regardless of religion learned Persian for their career and a job. Like today people study English for the same. Many Persian and Arabic words entered the local languages during this period.
