Iran’s New Reformist Pres. Masoud Pezeshkian Promises More Freedom, Better Relations with the West
Support our work: democracynow.org/donate/sm-de...
Voters in Iran elected Masoud Pezeshkian as president Saturday. The heart surgeon and former health minister defeated hard-liner Saeed Jalili in a runoff vote held just weeks after President Ebrahim Raisi and other top officials died in a helicopter crash. Pezeshkian has criticized Iran's mandatory hijab law for women and has promised to disband Iran's morality police, as well as better relations with the United States and other Western countries in the hopes of lifting sanctions. Journalist Reza Sayah in Tehran says that while Pezeshkian spoke the language of the reformist movement, he also strived to show "he's not going to be a disruptive force to the establishment." We also speak with Persepolis author Marjane Satrapi, who says "elections in Iran are a farce" and that no candidate who reaches the presidency can really challenge the system. "The president does not change a lot."

I'm Persian. I live in Iran. I voted for Masoud Pezeshkian. Iran is a pluralistic society. In Iran, people's opinions are very different. This lady has no knowledge of Iranian society at all. People's opinions in Iran change frequently with various domestic and foreign events. In addition, Iranian society has very different views. But the main concern of the majority of Iranian people today is the fight against corruption, justice and inflation control. There is an acceptable level of freedom of speech in Iran and it is not a concern of a large part of the people. A small part of people, especially young people, are also concerned about the freedom of hijab, but for other people, it is not very important and it is not one of the main priorities. Of course, the freedom of covering and hijab gradually arises over time with gradual cultural and customary changes. As it has been in the past. But some young people are in a hurry. Of course, today all governments have problems with the young generation. @@simaj9452

We don't have to condone everything the Iranian government does, but we can't change the fact that they are in power. Shouldn't we try to find some common ground with them for the sake of stability?

The problem with the criticism of Iran, you need not to play into the western islamophobia and arabphobia. The issues that she is talking about are real. No sir, they should stick to their geo political stance. The western attitude towards Israeli genocide has already expised the hollowness of western values. Abstract Masoud Pezeshkian, a Turk originally from the city of Urmu (Urmia) in West Azerbaijan, is a candidate for the Iranian presidency. Born and educated in the city of Savucbulaq (Savujbulagh, later Mahabad), Azerbaijan due to his parents' employment and residence, he is fluent in the Mukriyani dialect of the Kurdish language and familiar with the Kurdish culture. The candidacy of Pezeshkian for the presidency, is significant not only for the general democratization of Iran but also for the Turkish nation living in Iran and the "Turkish National Cause". In the contemporary history of Iran, Pezeshkian is the highest-ranking government official who has openly stated that he has a Turkish ethnic identity, is proud of being a Turk, and that Persian is not the mother tongue or the first language of Turks. By emphasizing his Turkish identity and expressing pride in being a Turk, Pezeshkian has delivered a historic and fatal blow to the official ideology of the modern state of Iran, as well as pan-Iranism and Azerbaijanism ideologies and their colonial nation building processes. For the past century, these ideologies have denied the existence of a distinct ethnic and national identity known as Turk in Iran, rejected the idea that Turkish is the mother tongue and primary language of Turks, and portrayed being a Turk as a shameful phenomenon. When Pezeshkian was the deputy speaker of the parliament, he was involved in the establishment of the “Faction of Turkish-Populated Regions”. Following its formation, he assumed leadership of the Faction. This Faction, consisted of representatives of all Turks residing throughout Iran with various political leanings, solidified the national name and identity of "Turk" and strengthened the national unity of the Western Oghuz people living in Iran, transforming them into a single entity and a cohesive political force operating under the banner of “Turk”, which is independent and separate from Farsis (Persians) and Farsistan (Persia). In this way, the independent Turkish ethnic-national factor reappeared in the political scene of Iran after the overthrow of the Turkish Qajar state. Over the past century, the Iranian state and Fars nationalists have been attempting to eliminate the "Turk" as an independent political factor and remove it from the Iranian political scene. In his speeches, interviews, and debates, Pezeshkian has consistently advocated the rights of women, as well as national and religious groups and the transition towards the Eyalet system - a form of federalism. He has voiced strong opposition to institutionalized discrimination against national, ethnic and religious groups, as well as gender discrimination. He also opposes the official policy of Farsification imposed on non-Persian nations. Pezeshkian has condemned the linguistic and national genocide of Turks by the Iranian state, mockery and demeaning portrayal of Turks in publications and media. Pezeshkian has insisted on the necessity of providing education in the Turkish language for Turks and in the languages of other nations and minority groups, in schools. Additionally, he has stressed the significance of fostering friendly relations with Turkey and the Republic of Azerbaijan. For these reasons, Pezeşkiyan's name is considered an important and positive figure in the national history of the Turks and the "Turkish National Struggle", even before being elected as President.

I have seen his own interview where he says is proud of being of Turkish origin - so I don’t think he has much affiliaton w/Kurds. His first official visit to Türkiye would be quite interesting as he is already popular.

@@Storming360 do you really believe Azeris are Iranians? Come on! Where I live, there is a large Azeri Iranian community and all of them say they are Azeri Turks. They were simply born on the other side of the Azerbaijan/ Iran border. They even talk to me in Turkish 😀

Eventhough Marjan Satrapi is reading feom a paper, she sounds like a person who has no clue about Iran and what is happening there!
She is reading off from a sheet she or someone prepared for her
Are you trying to report or are you speculating ...
The author and filmmaker lady who looks under 45, born and raised in Islamic iran, herself is a successful product of the Iranian Islamic era, she is a contradiction to what she tries to proof that Iranian women are oppressed and underacheived😅😅😅

This lady is taking rubbish, no proof of this type of behaviour what so ever. The thins is because Trump went out an international agreement with Iran, and since then they accused Iranians of controversial behaviour which is not true! If Iranians did their bits then it was Americans who cheated and did not their responsibility! And, now they say Iran behaving bad and the word "Terrorisim" should not be use for some one who is living at home, and suddenly, somebody comes from 15 thousands miles away and built military bases around your country in Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tagistan, ...! PLEASE HAVE SOME COMMON SENSE! RUBBISH REPORTING IS MADE VERY EASY THESE DAYS. SHAME ON YOU AND YOUR UNTRUE REPORT. LOMG LIVE IRANIAN!
whats up with having only 3 seconds per guest? This is for all intents and purposes a podcast.
Inviting Marjan Satrapi, which is one of the most clueless Iranian Diaspora to your show is akin to bringing GW Bush to discuss French philosophy. Please invite guests such as Professor Marandi and other distinguished Iran experts for a better insight into Iran's politics.
The structure of Iranian government ensures that no one runs without permission of the entrenched hardline mullahs. So 'reformist' is a conditionally limited position. The Soviet Union had similar top-down power structure which didn't go away until the Communists fell. Same with the hardline power structure in Iran.

Western capitalist dictators also have top down power structures.
why such a short time given to them?;
Pezeshkian considered Iran's method of managing the 2018 protests as "scientifically and intellectually wrong". He blamed the country's system for all the events and said: "We should have done better."After the 2022 protests, Pezeshkian demanded the creation of an assessment and clarification team regarding the death of Mahsa Amini. Although he considered the way of dealing with the protesters and their trial to be contrary to the constitution and demanded that the defendants should get lawyers, he later issued a statement, condemned the protests and did not consider it to be in the people's interest.
