    If you haven't tried it yet, iRacing excels in the actual racing. Once you get past the rookie stage (which isn't hard), the racing is really good and people (usually) aren't idiots crashing all over the place. There will still be crashes, but I've seen races in iRacing that are cleaner than real-world races.

    Also, the DW12 is around the same speed as the DP01, which I don't think anyone would call slow. If power increases as they plan, we at least have a fast ugly pig. Honda and Chevy can and will make more power if they are allowed to, heck, it's probably an ECU mapping away with ease. The big thing with me though is it's so damn slow on a big oval due to having it's power cut to slow it down, which, well... we have to get used to it. 240 isn't "safe" in this age. :( Fast enough on a road course.

    I'm new to racing Sims and haven't gotten a wheel yet. Can't wait to get one. Why is the in-game wheel turned to the left but the car is still going straight. Is it a custom setting you changed?

  • @TacticalCardboard

    @TacticalCardboard

    10 жыл бұрын

    No, it's because of the car setup. The car is naturally setup to turn left on an oval so it's as fast as it can go through the corners to keep up the average speed, so you need to hold the wheel against that left pull to go straight. iRacing now however offers a setup option to make the wheel straight while going straight even with the left turn bias. That's basically putting the wheel on crooked so it's straight, something routinely done in the real world.

    Watching that was actually fun, sold me on iracing for sure. As for the last incident I'd class it as a racing incident. If you were in a real car, or even a 3 monitor setup, you'd likely have seen him but in that situation he was in your blind spot, and you were close to his (he still had room to go high to avoid if he'd seen you). Yeah it's a sucky way to end a race but it wasn't intentional so I'd have let it go if I were in his position but nice to see you take responsibility too

  • @jakesaddo

    @jakesaddo

    5 жыл бұрын

    The trick is to be smooth. Once you start jerking the wheel all over the place you scrub too much speed off of the car AND you make the car really unstable. Turn it in once, don't turn too much. Start off with a slower cornering speed and build it up. Your speed will improve the more you practice (I do realise that I'm replying to a 7 month old comment, but I hope this still helps you and others that read this at some point)

    I'm not gonna start with the "NASCAR/Ovals require no skill" bull, because it's a plainly stupid belief, but really when I see indycars driving around in ovals it feels weird.. Those cars are made for much more than that and will shine on a proper track. Why not take some big engine car with a low degree heavy wheel that is specifically made for ovals? Just my 2c, good vid.

  • @TacticalCardboard

    @TacticalCardboard

    9 жыл бұрын

    Indycars weren't made for ovals? I think the "Indy" part of "Indycar" is pretty much a dead giveaway they belong on the ovals as much as they belong on the road courses!

  • @SaladFingers_

    Empty Box Well I'm not very sure about the root of the actual word, English isn't my first language. My point was just that these cars have such advanced aerodynamics built so the car can quickly change directions from left to right, right to left etc. I guess one point is that you need downforce to make it work best, thus speed, but I'm pretty sure much of it's aerodynamics could be simpler/more focused on oval racing if they were made for it. Again, just my 2c, not trying to argue with you or bash your video :)

  • @SaladFingers_

    @SaladFingers_

    Diego T. Fair enough, but indycars were made by open-wheel car standards. The fact that they are american ties them to a different culture than the european, one that of course includes oval tracks. But the open-wheel concept and the foundation of its aerodynamic design are more tailored to swift changes of direction while maintaining speed rather than fighting to keep it tame at top speed the whole time.

  • @TacticalCardboard

    @TacticalCardboard

    9 жыл бұрын

    SaladFingers Is it? The point of any race car is to go as fast as possible regardless of where. They have open wheels because that is how it's always been for over 100 years, it's lighter, it is what American open wheel racing is. It's like F1 (Indycar) and Sports cars (NASCAR) - you can only add so much bodywork until it becomes all the same. :) Don't forget though, it's not just an oval car. They bolt some road course wings on the car and go for it on anything from bumpy as heck street circuits to your smooth permanent circuits. As a fan of Indycar racing, without that huge variety it's just a random series, but because of it, it is my favorite type of racing around.

    The tire stagger (the tires on the right have a larger diameter) helps the car turn left better, but it means it would also want to turn left if he held the wheel straight, and he therefore needs to turn it slightly to the right to keep the car going straight.

    They can further reduce drag on the chassis and sidepods by "dimpling" the surface like a golf ball. It's been shown to increase fuel efficiency in cars by 2-3Mpg. At a track like Road America, or the 500 at Indianapolis, that could make a huge difference in pit stop strategy.

    +select20 I'm assuming it's so that the driver doesn't have to turn their arms quite as much when performing a turn. When going in a straight line it's not turned that much to the right. But, when turning left and the wheel is mounted to the hub completely straight it would have to be turned quite a lot. I like to think of the amount the wheel has to be turned as almost 50/50 having to turn it left and right when it is mounted asymmetrically.

Of my three races here: first one was clean for me, but we spent more time under yellow than actually racing; in the second, I got run over on the very first lap while slowing down for a huge wreck in T2 and couldn't continue; in the third, we only had one caution, but I saw someone crash so hard in T1 that the CrashMechanix™ actually vaulted him over the outside fence and there was no caution consequently LMFAO

    Brack survived his crash in Texas, Wheldon had a similar crash at Vegas but hit in a different manner, that the car would never fix without a roof. I don't even need to mention Fontana in 1999. Safe is not auto racing. Bouncing cars or not, it's still hugely dangerous. The cars aren't bunny hopping on ovals, the racing has been as clean as ever even on street courses. Are there still steps left? Of course. To go faster you have to be safer first though in this world.

    I think it is 50/50. One thing I was always taught is if a driver shows you his fender you are the one that needs to back down. You were clearly passing him, and there was no reason for him to be trying to defend a spot that was already lost. That was a give and take situation in which he did not give and you took. 50/50 in my opinion

  • @TacticalCardboard
    @TacticalCardboard11 жыл бұрын

    Amen to that! Still the sexiest and manliest downforce oriented open wheel cars IMHO. V8? Check. Turbo? Check. No paddles? Check. Ground effects? Check. Stacked field of drivers? Check. Looks like it will do 240 MPH? Check. Does 240 MPH? Check. Big slicks for everyone to see? Check. Sadly, I don't think that will ever happen, I doubt de Ferran's record will be broken anytime soon. How Tony won... I know how, but I still don't see how - if you catch my wall of boost induced drift.

    I'm not talking about a decade old car with an engine just as old. The "Swift 017.n" was developed in 2009 and continues development with Formula Nippon, today! It has much better aerodynamic performance characteristics than the DW12 which surprised the shit out of them with all the extra drag it produces.

  • @GeneralKenobiSIYE

    The DW12 uses ground effects. They have Venturi tunnels just like Champ Cars, and a rear diffuser. They are flatter than CART and Champ Car's rides, which is why they go airborne so easily, but they still produce significant ground effects DF. How can catching air so easily be considered "safe?"

    Newman/Haas would have a lot of pull, especially since it's what the fans wanna see. Since the Swift is used by a specs series too, it would also be cheap to buy and upgrade. Within the rules. Nippon is a series that evolved FROM Formula 1. I think seeing a Champ Car like ride in the field would bring a lot more attention to Indycar. With enough fan support and enough other teams beginning to use the Swift, other's might get in on the action and they might actually change (cont.)

    Champcars used ground effects, the Indycars are flat bottomed. It was more important to keep a consistent ride height with the champcars as that was a very large chunk of downforce. Totally different setup approach.

    Pretend everyone has a... loaded gun, armed bomb, poisonous gas cloud, ebola / other deadly virus. In short, stay away from everyone and expect to be killed until proven otherwise. Rookie rookie (as in rookie series where you run with rookies) aint the place for racing.

    Sebastian Woodard Just use the F3 relative display and find a "hole" on the track and stay in there if you can. Pay attention to your surroundings both in front and behind you, make your list of idiots so you know who you can't trust, drive carefully but be mindful that if you just stop for someone spinning you probably get run over because - well - you stopped!

    Also, Carl Haas bought up most of the rights to Lola Cars' designs and intellectual property after Lola went belly up. They could in theory, retool the Lolas from the days of Champ Car and run them. I think the rules ared only to restrict the cost, and not chassis design. Rules do or did state they could run a different chassis other than the DW12 if approved by the board. THAT is what it would take gain back fans, especially if a Swift/Lola hybrid was to dominate with an incredible driver.

    Really kind of tempting at VIR, actually.

    Retooling the Lolas with Swift aero components if IZOD Indycar refuses to allow anything else. Or creating a hybrid. The Lolas were beasts on road and street courses, but the Swifts would have cleaner air. Bring the best parts of each and create a new type of car that has plentiful spare parts. Both designs are more stable than the DW, and having greater DF from the under wings would be less catastrophic with a wing failure.

    The spotter will say that even if you have room to move up the track. Box assumed the guy was on the outside line, but he wasn't so there was contact. No big deal, it happens.

    Not a single corner is easy flat out at Pocono. Even turn 2 here (real circuit was repaved) you have massive bumps that if hit wrong will destroy you. For an oval in an indycar, this is a driver's track. Ovals aren't road courses. Road courses aren't ovals.
