iPhone 15 Problems With External SSD

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The iPhone 15 Pro Max has USB-C problems with power delivery to external SSD drive storage.
As you can see in this video the iPhone 15 Pro Max doesn't not have enough power to power the external USB-C SSD that I am testing it with.
However, the older and less powerful iPad Mini Generation 6 does work with the exact same external Thunderbolt 4 USB4 USB-C drive that the iPhone 15 Pro Max doesn't work with. The iPad Pro M2 also does not have a problem with the same drive.
What's really unfortunate here is that this external SSD is something that I use with my MacBook Pro M1 Max, my Mac Mini and my iPad Pro M1 and iPad Pro M2 for transferring and editing ProRes video files and H.264 and H.265 video files. Which means that my iPhone 15 Pro Max can't be part of this workflow without using extra power via a powered USB-C hub. Which means that I can't use that SSD with the iPhone 15 Pro Max when out and about, unless I were to use a USB-C battery bank and USB-C hub. Or I have to buy another external storage drive for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which wont be as fast as the drive shown in the video.
The external storage that I'm using is an ACASIS TBU405Pro M1 Thunderbolt 4 USB4 enclosure with a WD SN850X 4TB NVME M.2 SSD. This drive is as fast as it gets for any Mac or Apple device that supports Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C at any USB data rates and bandwidths.
Here's a video showing a similar external Thunderbolt SSD to one used in this video. This will give you a good idea as to why you'd want a fast drive like this for your video recording and video post production workflow.

Hi. You are very welcome. Yes, the first thing that I thought was the problem was the drive but it is the phone that's the problem. There's now been a lot more people reporting the same issues on a few of my videos. Cheers, Dave.

Apple is doing on purpose to force you to buy more internal storage, otherwise everyone would buy the basic storage and then try to do what you’re explaining. It’s despicable

Yes, Apple force you to buy upgrades on nearly every product that they do, where the basic model would be great except for one thing that slows it down, which is why you upgrade immediately. They really are sneaky. For instance, with their desktop and laptop computers they come with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage as their basic option. Both of which are useless starting points in this day and age and force you to upgrade to at least 16GB RAM and 512GB storage. Cheers, Dave.

I've encountered the same issue with my iPhone 15 Pro Max. I tested it with five different SSDs using an RTL9210B case. After spending 4 hours testing various USB 3.2, USB4, and Thunderbolt cables, I've concluded that the 4.5W output on the iPhone's USB-C port is insufficient for the 2TB SSD. However, the 1TB SSD works fine for connecting and file management on my iPhone Pro Max. Interestingly, when I tried the same 2TB SSDs with the RTL9210B case on my iPad Pro M1 and iMac 27, they worked flawlessly.

That’s interesting, thanks. Yes, the limiting factor would appear to be the overall power draw. Using something like a lower capacity Gen 3 SSD, such as a P3, may be just about OK with the combined power usage of the enclosure. However, certain larger capacity Gen 3 SSDs with a slightly higher power draw, probably tips it over the edge for total combined power draw with the power draw from the enclosure being included. In my experience, no Gen 4 SSDs have worked with any of my enclosures. There maybe some combinations of Gen 4 and an enclosures that don’t exceed the maximum power draw, but I’ve not found any. Yes, the iPad Pro and most Macs will be fine. These are using Thunderbolt ports, which are also USB compatible. These ports are capable of supplying around 15w of power. Thank you for your comment 👍 Cheers, Dave.

Thank you for your message. I've conducted tests on 1 unit of a 2TB Gen4 SSD, 1 unit of a 2TB Gen3 SSD, and 3 units of Gen3 1TB SSDs using my RTL9210B enclosure. The Gen3 2TB SSD doesn't work well with my iPhone 15 Pro Max. I also tested it using a powered dock case to connect the SSD enclosure and the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and everything works correctly with my 2TB Gen4 and 2TB Gen3 SSDs. Therefore, I've concluded that the iPhone 15 Pro Max cannot recognize 2TB SSDs without an external power supply. I believe that additional testing with more sample units is necessary to pinpoint the underlying issue. It could be related to the 2TB SSDs not receiving sufficient power through the 4.5W USB-C connection on the iPhone, or there might be potential compatibility issues between Gen3 and Gen4, which could be causing the iPhone 15 Pro Max to have difficulty recognizing the SSD. Thank you for your sharing.

This video is really helpful. I was just now discussing with other fellow iPhone 15 Pro owners on a forum who also have the ACASIS enclosures, some of us couldn't get it to mount like you showed, and some had it mounting once but never again. iOS unlike macOS does not have many means to trouble shoot so your video saved us the time to dig further. All in all I'd say this iPhone is disappointing, the heating and stuff like power output are limiting the potentials in the features that type-C is supposed to bring.

Hi. Yes, there are limitations that are starting to show very quickly in practical use. As you say, the file management in iOS and iPadOS is very limited compared to MacOS or Windows etc. In fact, my personal opinion is that the file management is almost next to useless and not at all helpful. Even Android has better file management. I will try and do some quicker videos about very specific storage stuff, which may be helpful to others. I’ve got another ACASIS TB4/USB4 being sent to me from ACASIS and also what looks to be the perfect USB-C hub for the iPhone 15. If you are interested in workflow stuff for video, keep an eye on my channel. However, for now, I agree, the 15 does seem to be a bit disappointing and I can confirm serious thermal issues and throttling with gameplay, which would be similar to the types of system stress as a good video application or any application that pushes the system. Cheers, Dave.

I have 3 SSD drives and different cables that i tested with my iPhone 15 Pro Max. The two Samsung T5 and T3 work flawlessly no matter what cable i use. They appear within 1 or 2 seconds and browsing files and folders is fast and smooth. I recorded multiple sub-30 seconds ProRes 4K, 60 fps videos on the T5 without any issues. Once the recording is stopped the thumbnail appears instantly. It takes a second or two before the first time but playback is smooth. My third SSD is a SanDisk Extreme Pro 2 TB. When i use the standard braided 1m cable, i have no issues. I also have no issues when using an Apple 2m USB-C to USB-C cable. But no matter how many times I use Apple’s new Thunderbolt 4, 1m cable or Anker 240W, 40Gb/s 1m cable, i get “This accessory uses too much power” message. Bottom line: try different cables (even cheaper ones) before changing your SSD. I hope this helps.

Hi. That’s excellent information thanks 👍 This will be great for others reading the comments 👍 BTW, I use a CalDigit TB4 cable and it’s perfect. If you check my recent videos, TB4 cable vs USB C cable with an S23 Ultra, the CalDigit cable works perfectly with that as well. I’m not too sure but I was under the impression that “proper” TB4 cables had to be licensed from Intel, which the CalDigit is. I have another TB4 cable that’s problematic. Maybe there are some out there that don’t adhere and fully comply with all the standards that they should, as TB4 cables are designed to be fully backwards compatible with all the USB-C variations and USB3 protocols and bus speeds/bandwidths. Again, thank you for that valuable information and for freely sharing it 👍 Have a great day. Cheers, Dave.

Hello David, nice video. I’m having troubles with the Pro res recordings, when I record 4k60fps pro res and play the video on windows or my video editor it gets very choppy, and even after rendering the video lags randomly on the exact same timeframes for some reason. This has not happened to me before with this kind of chunky files, I have a pretty beefy workstation with a 4090 (windows) so it doesn’t make sense that my PC is causing the problems. I also bought a 10gbps usb c, and I’m using a small 1tb sandisk portable drive (520mb/s). I don’t know if I should upgrade to a better drive, maybe that’s the main problem. Do you happen to know what might be causing this? Cheers!

Hi, Peter. Do you have the exact same ACASIS enclosure as this one? I only ask as they do make a few that look very similar. I have another ACASIS TB4/USB4 that I have for my MacBook Pro which I will try later and if it works I’ll post a quick video later, it’s the one in this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/pYptp6aEk5jgoM4.htmlsi=JoBgqOKY-DnkvYX_ I’m also wondering if it could be the actual NVME SSD inside the enclosure, I’ll have to test for that. The only other SSD I’ve tried is a SATA one with a Samsung 870 EVO 4TB which was inside a SATA to USB-C enclosure, that worked fine, although, the speed didn’t feel right. I may end up posting a number of videos about SSDs etc. but just do quick ones for very specific drive combinations. If you’re going to be using the Blackmagic Camera app, keep an eye on my channel as I’ll be doing some very specific setup videos. I’ve already recently done one for the iPad Pro that you may find interesting. I’m also being sent what looks like the perfect USB C hub for the iPhone 15 from ACASIS. This is not specifically for powering external drives but because it’s got all kinds of ports and connections on it, HDMI, Ethernet, audio I/O etc. and might be great for a desktop setup for the phone. Cheers, Dave.

I fully charged the phone and now it is working again, but I am very concerned about this happening while I am shooting an important job. Do I understand you correctly that purchasing a powered USB-C hub will circumvent the problem? If so, can you point me to a link on Amazon or Best Buy. I am waiting to get my iPhone 15 Pro, since supplies are limited. I understand what you are presenting in this video, but I am not expecting the 15 Pros to have that much power to run an SSD bigger than Samsung T7 or Sandisk Extreme... Thank you for the work! I have 2 ACASIS TBU405 enclosures, 1 with WD SN570 2TB NVME & the other WD SN770 2TB NVME. And a third ACASIS enclosure with USB C Hub with PD Port (Model: CM073). With your test, I will be using the Hub mounted to a cage for shooting longer ProRes Videos... I will purchase a Samsung T7 2TB for times where I won't use the cage. FYI: For this to work properly away from power? Use a PD battery bank rated 100W or more, I do not have a recommendation at this moment. The only issue I see with shooting using a SSD? Battery health after a year. The iPhone has now become a true Multi Tool Computing Device! With a smaller battery, compared to the iPad Pro M1/M2. But you can edit your footage on the iPad in the field.

Apple specifies that the external ssd must have a power draw of less 4.5W. I had the same problem with a SanDisk extreme pro and check the tests on that it can peak around 5W which then caused intermittent problems. With a Samsung T7 which peaks below 4.5W, I have had no problems at all. I'm sure this is more of an issue with the phone than the ipads given the smaller battery and less peak capacity. They're likely limiting the power out of the USB-C connector in order to prevent the chance of dropping voltage to the phone's processor and causing glitches.

I found this also on my own, trying to test with an NVME SSD and a Sabrent enclosure. It appeared on the iPhone 15 ProMax for a few minutes, then disappeared. Tried switching cables and still no luck. The Sabrent enclosure became extremely hot and I believe that the iPhone 15 ProMax may somehow be thinking it needs to charge (not just power) the enclosure. This is the 2nd external hard drive I've tested with the new phone, so definitely something wrong with the iPhone 15 hardware and/or OS.

Hi, Julius. Yes, it's definitely a power issue that can't sustain the overall current. I suspect the iPad Pro has no issue because I think the standard for Thunderbolt is 5V 15W, probably because Thunderbolt is a newer standard. However, the iPad Mini can do it and it's only USB-C and should also be only 5V 5W. There's nothing that I've used this SSD with that can't operate it, except the iPhone. What's more weird is that the iPhone can do reverse charging, which must be really low and slow for whatever it's charging (probably usually the Apple earbuds). Cheers, Dave.

It's definitely an iPhone problem. I just got the ACASIS 10 in 1 hub with SSD enclosure, and a Samsung 2TB SSD. I tried connecting the iPhone directly to the SSD hub, and the hub would not power on, I tried with a 65W Ugreen charger because this particular ACASIS hub comes with power PD, but guess what? the drive still would not show up, the only difference now is that the hub is powered on, and the cute little iPhone is charging...how convenient 😂 perhaps it's the 65W being shared with the hub that requires at least 60W, and iPhone taking maybe say 15W or maybe it's taking it's full 27W because it's coming from a 65W PD. The final twist is I tried connecting the hub directly to a Samsung A73 that charges at max 25W, and the hub powered up, and also the SSD showed up on the device like it's supposed to, and fast. 😕

Hi, Greg. That's super annoying and yes, what was that all about in the video where they were bleating on about the USB-C capabilities for recording externally etc. I think we are going to start finding more drives that wont work. It looks to me as though it may be Gen4 SSDs that are the problem for the phone as it doesn't seem to be able to power the chipset in the enclosure and the NVME SSD. If so, this will be really bad as the only way to get 10Gb/s in transfer speed to an external drive, when dumping internal files, would likely to be to something with a fast NVME in it. There are hardly any USB C drives that will go above 10Gb/s and most are less than 5Gb/s with SATA SSDs in them. I'm not sure that the phone is even capable of being used properly with USB4, which is backwards compatible. While the slower drives are still capable of recording ProRes 4444 4K/60, many people use the faster drives so they can offload the data to their computer faster to edit direct off the drive. Anyway, super annoying. Cheers, Dave.

I have the same problem with my Asus Arion ssd enclosure with iPhone 15 Pro Max. The connection cable is the usb c to c 3.1 cable comes with the enclosure. I found some video on youtube that the same ssd enclosure can be detected by both 15 and 15 pro but the cable seems not the one with the enclosure. In my experience, the enclosure can be detected only once amoug many times of plug and unplug with the RGB lighting effect is on everytimes. When I plugged the enclosure to my m2 iPad pro, it pumps up immediately. I am going to buy a tb3/4 cable. If it doesn't help, seems it is a software bug more than a power issue.

Hi. That sounds like a real pain. I doubt it's a software issue, at least not in my situation. If it were software related then you would expect the drive to not be seen in any configuration. However, when connected via the hub it works. This does seem to suggest a power issues, as in, not enough power direct from the iPhone's USB-C port. Cheers, Dave.

@Nekokotoo has identified one solution. If second plugging isn’t successful, it is needed to plug the SSD to a computer which is capable of « Ejecting » properly (only Mac as far as I saw because neither Windows nor the Iphone allow ejecting, at least in the case of an enclosed NVMe SSD like mine) So plug the faulty SSD on Mac, click on eject, unplug, plug on the Iphone and it will appear again. Thanks @Nekokotoo !

For the days I have been struggling with different cables to understand why my SSD would discovered only once and then not anymore by the Iphoen PM 15, I can also confirm that Ejecting properly on a Mac will make the SSD be visible once more... And it seems footages over a minute or so are veeery long and hard to managed for the Iphone.

I believe this is a problem with your external hard drive and not the iPhone 15. I bought a Samsung T7 external SSD and I have no problem connecting it to my iPhone 15 Pro Max. It is instantly (within a second or two) recognized by the iPhone. I can see it pop up in the File Manager and I can see the contents of the drive right away when browsing the drive. It is also recognized in the native camera app and show the number of minutes available to record in Apple ProRes. I have tried multiple cables of different manufacturers and lengths and all my USB-C cables work with the T7 drive and the iPhone. Hi. I seem to have narrowed down the problem. I tried 5 different enclosures and 2 NVME SSDs in the enclosures, one Gen4 and one Gen3. The iPhone wouldn't see any configuration that used the Gen4 NVME and was a bit hit or miss with the Gen3. The enclosures were USB C 10Gb/s, USB4 40Gb/s and Thunderbolt 4 which is also 40Gb/s. I imagine that the problem with certain branded "off the shelf" SSDs such as some by Sandisk, WD etc. Is that internally they may be using NVME SSDs, these will probably be ones that are rated at least 1000MB/s, and that's why the iPhone doesn't work with them. I'll do a video about it soon. Cheers, Dave.
