iPhone 15 Pro DROP TEST! Is Titanium STRONGER?

Ғылым және технология

I flew all the way to Australia to get the iPhone 15 early and drop test it vs the iPhone 14 Pro! And as it turns out...the titanium iPhone 15 Pro isn't as strong as I thought it would be.

    Remember that whether a phone breaks or not in these very unscientific drop tests largely comes down to the exact spot where impact occurred, and what type of impact. Even on the same surface, you can have wildly different results even with the same phone. You could have a 14 Pro shatter from 2 feet and then a different one be fine from 6 feet, all depending on how they fall.

    A common misconception is that titanium is superior to steel in strength. It is not, it's just lighter at for the same amount of strength because it's less dense. So we shouldn't see a better performance in terms of scuffs and bulks when dropping, but more in over weight.

  • @rafdor5131

    @rafdor5131

    But if 15 Pro Max weighs less than 14 Pro Max with same amount of strength then it should be able to survive that fall from same level of height, not the other way around. Don’t know why 15 Pro is failing these drop tests.

    You have to remember just because the frame is harder that can actually work against you, because if it does deform, it can push in on the screen permanently and cause a crack. Stainless steel is much more flexible while still having good strength, which can actually be a huge asset because it can absorb some of the shock from the impact rather than sending everything into the screen. Fun fact I had two broken screens when iPhones were only in aluminum. Ever since the iPhone X I’ve had a stainless steel phone ever since every year upgrading to the latest model, and I have never had one crack screener back glass. It seems that that titanium may be harder than aluminum but it when it fails it will fail just as badly as aluminum with permanent indention.

I was thinking that the slight curve on the glass might be bad for falls on the glass as my X broke because of that curve but wasn’t expecting it to be that bad. The dark titanium is doing exactly what I thought cause I thought it might be like the black iPhone 5’s aluminium and show the inner colour when it gets damaged. So it looks like stainless steel although it scratches easily takes falls better.

    I wish they keep the flat glass. With the thinner bezels, they could probably make the edge of frame rounded, extend it a little bit outwards (with internal aluminium support) , but keep the flat glass a tiny bit lower than the frame. That would be a lot more durable than switching to a new material.

    Some of the issues with the 15 Pro are that; one that the rear panel no longer has a metal back plate, and two, the aluminum chassis doesn’t provide enough rigidity. Apple cheaped out on the frame by making the titanium only a minimal cladding. Stainless steel is a superior chassis and frame.

    I have been waiting for this! Last year when I bought the new Watch Ultra I barely hit it on the edge of the wall and it put a nice gash in side of it, didn't have much confidence in the titanium to holding up after my watch experience. So glad I didn't pre-order as well, can't wait to see more of these types of videos, even though this pretty much was all I needed to make a decision. If you notice after a few of the drops on the 15 you can actually see that frame around the cameras start to show, (Drop #11, 7:27) what's up with that Apple? Awesome content as always Sam and enjoy Australia while you are there mate. Already looking forward to the iPhone 16 next year!!

    Once the glass cracks every drop is going to get significantly worse. The 15 Pro internal frame is aluminum and the Titanium is just an aesthetic outer frame. So, the core structure of the phone is actually aluminum, not titanium. That combined with rounded glass transitioning into the rounded titanium means it has no drop protection compared to the glass being fully enveloped by the stainless steel on the 14 Pro. Once again, it was a decision made by Apple to make the phone look nicer in promo shots and in the store, but instantly needs to be hidden by a case once you actually buy it. It leaves me befuddled that companies keep making design choices that look nicer without a case, but are so poor that they force you to use a case.

    I think what is happening is that titanium being a harder metal, does not disperse shocks as well as stainless steel & aluminum, hence not working well with glass. Not sure how Apple engineers didn't foresee this... This may potentially be the worst iPhone made in terms of durability.

    @@ggimtmemes I think you meant 6+. I disagree. Yes, that bent. But the camera housing never fell off & it took a significant amount of force to bend. Plus it had no issues of the screen breaking every time the phone fell, because aluminum disperses shock much better. This on the other hand requires very light pressure to break the back & the glass shatters on the first drop almost every single time. Not to mention the ridiculous price difference between what this costs and what a 6+ costed back in the day.

Titanium is stronger which could hold up better to smaller day-to-day scratches along the edges but because stainless steel is softer, it actually allows for the impact to be taken by the stainless steel, therefore removing the pressure from the screen/back glass from a fall. I agree curved edges obviously will play a big part as they always have but titanium is stronger than steel per mass. Depending on the types/grades but roughly a steel that is stronger than titanium will have 3-4 times the mass. Making that a very large, heavy and uncomfortable phone. If the 14 had 3-4 times more mass of stainless steel than it would be on par with titanium for strength. However, you would also have a super heavy, large, uncomfortable and ugly phone….that would also have a screen/back glass that would be just as likely to break as the titanium iPhone 15. 📱 Let’s just put cases on them and be happy for a lighter and more comfortable phone with a slightly smaller overall size without compromising on the screen size. ✌🏻

    There is a trade-off here. In Australian or Singapore dollars, for the 14, the back glass is about a $800 repair. For the 15, the same repair is $300 or so. It's because the back screen can be removed and replaced by itself on the 15, whereas the 14 many internal components are attached to said glass making for a costly repair. On the 15, I speculate that the rigidness on the 14 due to attached components is gone, hence easier to break.

    There’s a difference between durability of a broad force trying to bend the material versus resistances to chips and scratches obtained from drops. I’m guessing titanium in theory is better for resistance to scratches and chips overall but worse at resisting an intentional/constant higher pressure bend. A big problem with the testing methodology here though: once the first glass crack happened on the 15, the following increased damage wasn’t entirely a fair comparison. It was already compromised and doesn’t represent what would have happened if an undamaged iPhone 15 had the same happen.

It's very hard to tell without even seeing all the components and geometries of the frame and how the backglas is fixed to it. If I remember the old design correctly the backglas had one almost undisturbed geometry (geometry which not lead stress peaks) but the new ones have a lot of these in the camera area (because of its shark radiuses).
