I feel the same. He is the most thorough and reliable reviewer I have ever seen. Back when iphone launched night mode, no reviewer discolsed the option we had to take photos with 30s exposure time, and every comparison was done with the default exposure time. But he presented this and many others small things that made the difference. It’s all about being the right amount of subjective over objective

I’ve been experiencing this ever since iOS 17 came out in release candidate. My iPhone 12 would get really warm and battery wouldn’t last until mid day. Even if I barely used instagram, which was usual for me, it’d still show up at the top of the battery consumption chart as being the most power demanding app. Ever since uninstalling and using the web version, haven’t had any of the issues before mentioned.

Of course it'd be Meta with its appalling code management/optimization... The more Meta apps I install on my phone, the worse its battery life gets. I am already tracked by Google because I use Android, but when Zucc enters the fray, things get ugly very fast. Thanks for the heads up for iPhone users

Yeah, it may be better to access these sites through a browser rather than through an app.

You’re right, I’m on iPhone 13 and both instagram and brave behave like that almost for 6 months now. It’s real and not an iPhone issues

I'm loving my iPhone 15, don't listen to these click hungry fear mongering tech-drama people. Just pay attention to your return window in case you wish to return and just enjoy your phone. I've been doing this since iPhone 2G and every iPhone these drama tech people try to sensationalize something if it has an apple logo on it.

I’ve been hesitant about updating software on the day the software becomes available. I always wait till reviews are released before making the decision to update. This is a great example of why. Thanks for letting us know. Hopefully Apple can push out an update that fixes this issue.

Time to shut Instagram down and put it out of business.

My iPhone 15 has been overheating. I would get on a phone call and 10 min into a call my phone would get unusually hot and the battery would drain pretty quick. This would happen on any call I get on. I watched your video and I decided to remove the instagram app and threads, I don’t use the apps but had them on my phone. After removing these two apps I have not had any heating on my phone nor does my battery drain. If you are having the same issue try that. Thank you so much for this video, no one else seems to be talking about this

A little bit off topic, but strangely, this might be the only one I saw on social media that showing how Fine Woven stays after a few days *normal* use.

Good to know, I guess that’s why I haven’t had any overheating or overly warm either on my 15 Pro, I just don’t use it even though I have it installed it’s not running in the background. Guess there’s some code that’s just not completely compatible or optimised.

Huh, that explains why my devices weren't affected. I've never installed the Instagram app before. I even tried to overheat my phone by playing graphically intense games and it only got warm, not uncomfortably hot.

Wish app developers would update more often to keep up with os updates! Because Facebook is super jittery and sometimes my keyboard would bog out and sometimes on KZread the comment text field would glitch out and not let me edit without freaking out!!

Really interesting, great observation. If this theory proves true, do you think we notice it more on the 15 Pro because it's made of titanium, a material less conductive than aluminum, which can't extract the device's heat as efficiently, causing the glass to heat up more than previous models? Or is it just a placebo effect?

Apple has said recently messaged that the titanium/aluminum of iPhone 15 Pros are better at conducting heat than stainless steel.

Iphondo, I found a basic activity monitor type app and from very brief test it shows about 3% CPU usage normally and jumps at times to 71% plus when instagram in use, on Iphone 15 pro max

I recorded 4K60 ProRes to external drive until the phone battery died, no overheating nothing.

Great video. I just got a 15 pro and I’ve noticed that instagram and especially TikTok along with a few others are making the phone very toasty and absolutely killing the battery. But on the other hand watching 35 minutes of KZread took 1% of the battery and phone was stone cold. I’m hoping this is a software issue that can be fixed asap because right now my phone dies quicker than my old one.

Any app that uses the chip's performance will heat up the device. The issue is that the titanium is a worse heat dissipator vs the aluminum that it's bonded to. If it was only the app, then previous iphones would be overheating too. The issue is with the titanium building the heat up without letting it go.

a very weird thing happened with my iPhone 11 Pro Max. it fell the other day from 5 feet, fortunately nothing happened, kept it on charger and it updated itself to iOS 17.0.1. as i started using instagram, the temperatures were just absurd but a day passed by and it is working fine now. didn't update the app and neither did i change anything on the phone. found this strange

Haven't experienced this at all on my 14 Pro running iOS 16 and 17.

I am running a sideloaded version of Instagram version 255 and although my iPhone 13 doesn't get warm, Instagram does drain battery a lot. I thought that was because the build is old but it looks like the newer versions are worse.

you should get a FLIR and record a side by side so that the problem is made more visual

Spotify did a similar thing a year or two ago, an app update after a couple days fixed it

@iphonedo In settings/battery, does the phone show that is the app the one draining the battery? Ive had a terrible result on battery on my iphone 14 pro, and this might be the reason, but it does not appear as a great contributor according to the phone. Thanks!

I agree that finewoven will be fine if you use these things normally, but the criticism is mostly just. If some keys rub on it while it’s in pockets, or you drop it and it slides a bit on rough surface, it’s gonna show forever on a premium case that costs $60. Even if the price was lower, it would be a bit unjust, but I think at this point, people are right to complain.

It's exactly as you say with Instagram.

I think there is a manufacturing issue with some devices. I got my first iPhone 15 Pro unlocked directly from Apple and it was heating up and the battery life was short, so I returned it and got the second one from AT&T and it’s perfect without any issues.

You are right my iPhone 14 pro max heated like crazy while using instagram for 3 minutes or so phone was very hot to touch even the display was also hot literally I had to remove the case and let it to cool down right its just Instagram and not in another apps

Maybe it’s time to update apps. Because just right now after a few days since the release of both new iPhone 15s and the new iOS 17 i saw a notification of apps that needs to be updated. So, now apps are now being updated for the new iOS 17 that can fixed the issues. For optimization

man. I have the same issue since I updated to iOS 17 on my 14 Pro iPhone. Yesterday I got my new 15 Pro Max and guess what? the issue persists. it’s so frustrating, as a content creator to experience this. last year when I bought my iphone 14 pro max every time I entered Chrome the same thing happened after 1-2 minutes excessive heating, it was enough just to enter Chrome without any actions the phone went crazy?

What is Instagram (Meta) doing that causes the phone to heat up? Is it analyzing phone data? Is it just poorly coded?

I wonder if it's not crunching all of your photos it has access to? That would explain it. Facebook was listening to you in the background, instagram can look at your photos.

Not really an issue on my iPhone 15 Pro. Left Instagram open for a while now, the phone is not heating up.

So is an issue with Instagram specifically running on iOS 17? if that is the case, sounds like the app hasn't been optimized correctly for iOS 17. I'm using an iPhone 11 Pro for past 3 years and 9 months and haven't updated to iOS 17. I've yet to upgrade, not in a major rush but will see how things unfold in coming weeks / next 2-3 months. Thanks for providing clarity on the situation. There is so much fear mongering going on about it, WSJ and other media outlets are blowing it out of proportion.

Yes it is. I've been testing it on my phones iPhone 15, 14, 13, iPad all that runs on iOS/iPadOS 17 heats up like crazy.

I have a question. The rotten insta app has “live activities” enabled in the settings. Per default. Without asking. What gives? Next. What do you know about the battery life? Have you tested it? Would be very interesting seeing what your experience and opinion is. Please and thank you 👋🏽

For me (so far), it was the KZread Music app. My battery was draining quickly and the phone was getting warm when I listened to music using the app. I did a search on Reddit and someone suggested disabling location services for the app and that seems to have done the trick. Why KZread Music needs to track my location is beyond me. Phone is not running warm anymore and battery life has been holding steady. Can't comment on the Instagram app because I don't use it that much.

It'd stand to reason if he deleted his app and reinstalled, it woudln't matter if he transferred anything. Unless the implication is that some data is leftover that doesn't get removed on uninstall.

I had it overheated on me while filming 4k 30 outside for about 10-15 minutes in 89 degree weather in Florida. It gave me a warning that my phone needed to cool down and the screen dimmed terribly. I have filmed dozens of vlogs outside in Florida heat with my 14 pro max and never got that warning. The phone has an issue.

It could be an app like Instagram running in the background. Best to close all apps and film again and if it does not overheat, then you have an app that is unoptimised. You can then work out what app it is.

@@andyH_England Today I had my phone get up to 100° doing nothing other than use an App that doesn’t even do anything other than view jobs. I barely used my phone for the day and my battery was at 60% at 4 PM. I have never had that happen with my iPhone 14 Pro Max. I called Apple and did a service call. They ran a diagnostic asked me a bunch of questions and of course said everything looked like it was fine. I have an appointment to go to the Apple Store on Monday of the coming week for them to look at it to see if maybe mine has an issue and I can get it swapped out on Warranty.
