Hey @iPhonedo, awesome vid, and I confirmed your findings. My Instagram account, when logged in, results in the same overheating in my launch day iPhone 15 Pro Max! I am currently checking other apps and, thus far, I'm suspicious of the Mastodon app. Let me know if you'd like me to get specific data.

Especially when it's a hot (lol) button topic for a trillion+ dollar company's most important product launch - in which misleading headlines about "overheating iPhones" could cost 10's of billions of dollars - when it's actually a rogue app causing the issue. Apple should be slinging him some coin

I think it might be related to allow access to the microphone/camera. I disabled access to those for instagram and it stopped overheating. I then un-installed instagram anyway :D

Good find - likely an update will resolve - one they figure out the issue…..

Have you checked the wireless network traffic? Maybe it is transferring data in the background. For example, sound data received from the microphone.

I had battery issues with iOS 17 on my iPhone 11 Pro Max. And a Metronome app was eating battery in the background like crazy! I didn’t even know I opened it and it was draining battery and heating the phone up. So it might be a combination of iOS and apps that’s causing the issue.

@@iPhonedocheck your “Held for review” comments. I sent some links but I think they were automatically held. I also added a link to a screenshot of my battery usage that day.

One could really make an argument that Meta is trying to purposley make the iphone / ios experience worse for apple users so they switch to android. This is most likely because Apple's privacy restrictions block Meta's tracking which is their revenue generator. I wonder if someone could find code in their apps that attempts to ramp up the GPU to drain battery.

​@@JC-tg5xx It’s not as good as… say GrapheneOS. But it’s definitely better than Google-infested Android OS, which is the one that shipped with Samsung, motorola, etc., devices. Apple provides many privacy-focused feature like Private Relay (a dumbed-down version of Tor), Hide My Email, Lockdown Mode (which turns off a lot of JavaScript features), etc.

Hmmm not having any of this issue on my iPhone 15 Pro and even on my iPad Pro when I doom scrolling on Instagram. But that's crazy how one app can cause all of these overheating problem

Check and compare the settings between users. What are the chances that one account is syncing one way or the other as soon as you log in.

Makes you wonder what the difference is between your two instagram accounts, have you compared the account settings, for instance commercial instagram vs non commercial etc?

Thank you for your video, once I removed instagram and threads from my iPhone 15 I have not had any heating up. I could not even get on a phone call because of how hot my phone would get.

Is it the account or the particular content in the account? I tend to guess that some heavy algorithm is getting loaded for particular content. Can't think of much else that would push the processor that hard otherwise

That's a really good point however it might not be the whole picture.

Hasn’t instagram had issues with cpu usage and reels before? Wonder if it’s trying to preload a bunch of reels and so it depends on how many it’s trying to do at a time? Seems like the account wouldn’t matter as much as the content/codecs.

I don't know by one difference I noticed between the two accounts is the number of reel / videos in the page is drastically different, so maybe their is some preloading and buffering being done by instagram that is coursing the spike in performance, and if instagram video format is not one the built in video decoder supports, then it will shift that processing to the CPU for processing.. and so if your page is Manley reels, stories, and groups with video... if might be triggering the issue... but just a guess and observation.

Heating issues and also Instagram taking more storage before iOS 17 it’s been 345-453MB after iOS it’s been 1.4-1.86GB

Not sure if this is related but if you go into settings -> Instagram -> Disable background app refresh It will improve battery.

Yeah I had the same issue, the moment I uninstalled Instagram, the phone cooled down. Thank god!

Happily I'm not on IG so no worries here! Great detective work so standing by to if IG or Apple does anything about this.

To me, the Safari Instagram seems to run smoothly. Maybe the app doesn’t support ProMotion as Safari does?

Could it be that your account recenct posts are mostly reels so instagram is trying to load them all while other accounts can have less taxing media that loads faster or something? or maybe the amount of engagement is higher on one account... idk

Theory: if it mostly happening to KZreadrs, it may be due to the amount of comments, mentions or messages they receive. It would be nice to monitor network connections, maybe we can spot an api call that’s repeating endesly.

I am using iOS 17 since beta 2 and I never experienced any overheating while using Instagram. And I use it to edit videos with the reels editor. Using iPhone 12 PRO Max.

my 15 pro also heated up very quickly due to instagram, but after the next instagram update it stopped so much

Could it be something to do with how instagram caches? The cacheing activity is different for each account, that’s why when both accounts are logged in, it is still causing the phone to heat up? Just a thought.

I would isolate it to wifi and monitor the data traffic between the two accounts.

I wonder what results you would get by running your test on the web version of Instagram.

Its not just instagram. And my 15 pro max with the original 17 as well as the new beta that was just released. They wre talking about instagram being the issue 2 weeks ago - and thought they were right but it happens in tiktok, facebook, and not even using instagram.

I wonder if one account has different settings than the other account the would cause them to be overheating? My first thought was that there was some sort of monitoring going on, or perhaps some analytics, or metrics one account was gathering and sending back to the Facebook mothership?

They are both business accounts, ayfondo (because iPhonedo is squatted) is the global one, and iPhonedoTR is the Turkish one, they are both connected to Facebook etc. Notifications etc are the same too.

I heard IG issued an update to fix this?

So it's a particular setting or combination of settings in Instagram. It's not an app I'd trust.

Is it not always a Meta app?

How is holding the phone wrong blocking the antenna is a user error, now is user instagram account is the user error?

What if you access Instagram via Safari or Chrome?

Maybe Instagram is trying to download a ton of data in the background or try to cache it. Sorta like how my phones all get pretty toasty when I log into Outlook on a new phone and it starts downloading dozens of GBs worth of work emails.

I had the overheating issue with the app vero on my 14 pro max this past spring it’s not just a iPhone 15 or iOS 17 issue I stopped using vero since not worth my battery 🤣

Instagram have different experiences for different account. I have old account, since the start of Instagram. Created another account and it's really really different, everything is different.. So I agree that instagram might be giving out experiences based on the account.

So this shows the Apple series chip is not effient enough to sustain any significant processing in the iphone package. This clearly demonstrated a prolong series of CPU utilization results in overheating the phone within minutes. I see a CPU throttle implemtation due to heat coming soon.

Damn, 2% battery health in 2 weeks has got to be a record.

My 15 pro max IOS 17.0.2 device does not heat up on Instagram. It only overheats when making phone calls. I use Vodafone e-Sim in Turkey. I don't know how much of an impact this will have, but I wanted to mention it as information.

Question... My iPhone 12 is not overheating, but I don't have Threads. Could it be that connection?
