honestly, when I first saw the dynamic island I was impressed on how clever and seamless the transition between software and hardware was; yes, i know it becomes more obvious and apparent in certain lighting conditions but it still works.
The single thing I feel I miss out on is the 120Hz display. It will be the same experience as with my old one but better. I decided to skip this update and go for a watch instead, so two more years of waiting until the next upgrade. They won't take away the things that have value, like physical volume adjustment. And those don't cover that much vetical space inside the phone anyway. The physical SIM card on the other hand has truly no value when an eSIM can do the same thing just as well if not in most cases better in every way. It's even less pointless than the headphone jack, which at least has higher audio in/out quality and less latency going for itself compared to Bluetooth.

Not a "review" but still more informative than anything else on KZread, with level-headed takes on most of the "controversial" points of the phone. This iPhone has some of Apple's best and worst qualities and Michael is quick to point them out imo. Why ditch the SIM tray when you can have it + eSIM? Because they want to make it more painful to switch to Android, similar to their lack of RCS support in iMessage. And yet, with Apple, a user gets features beyond what Android can offer. Developers have a singular, consistent platform that reaches millions of users, and the Dynamic Island is the perfect example of that dichotomy in action. By embracing the Notch instead of trying to avoid it, Apple keeps FaceID while adding a unique feature that comes with added functionality, and developers have minimal headaches when it comes to developing between Islands and Notches.

Great video as always. I absolutely love ios 16, been an Android user for over a decade and figured I'd try Apple again by buying the 13 Mini and I loved it and I love it even more by how ios 16 is even more like Android with customizations and thank God for the new lockscreen and notifications those def saved the iphone experience for me. Notifications were terrible before the update. Good job Apple, now just keep it.
I really want that Dynamic Island feature on my Android device. I would love for it to be able to be used as a mini taskbar.
From my perspective, the "island" functions identically to android's notification shades and pop up windows. It's just looks prettier and a little less intrusive. Though personally I'd rather a smaller hole punch than an ugly oval obstructing part of my videos. Also eSims are clearly another step towards Apple's attempt to lock down their ecosystem and make it more cumbersome for iPhone users to move away. And the fact that they're still desperately clinging on to lightning for another year just to squeeze a little more royalty money is unsightly, not to mention hypocritical.

I agree with everything you said except the bubbles thing. I think dynamic island isn't as functional since it doesn't open up the whole app, just some functions but it also doesn't take up much space and is always persistent. I think for quick glances and stuff, dynamic island is superior while for whole app functions, bubbles win. An example would be, when I'm drawing, I like Google opened in bubble view so I can see my references and KZread playing music in the background. But as one could guess, switching music is bit more painful. With dynamic island, the whole music thing will be easily solved but it can't do the references. It's good but not for heavy stuff, I like it personally
@Stabity

The dynamic island is just an extension of the dynamic notifications they were talking about with the newest version of iOS. It's weird that everyone is saying they are reinventing the wheel. It's cool to see them integrate notifications and widgets together like that but it's not that much more convenient. I think if they managed to get it at the bottom of the screen where you could actually use it quickly and effortlessly, then it would be a bigger deal.
@nrbgamingYT
Жыл бұрын
I think most people reacting to the Dynamic Island are getting a basic thing wrong - it is not a feature addition by choice, it is a feature creation out of necessity. Apple will not be ditching the Face ID any time soon, which means the sensors have to visibly be there on the screen. They have found a way to work around it, make it more intuitive. I hope the Androids don’t try to copy this, because they don’t have the ‘necessity’. But we all know, some (if not all) manufacturers will find a way to do something similar. 😪
Delightful video! An always must-see by MrMobile
Nice preview. The funny thing about the esim was you mentioned Apple said that there was one last step, like not needing a physical plastic card (aka sim) from your provider. But they've only replaced the sim, with a bigger card you have to get and scan. So .. yeah. Still not completely there yet. What would be great is something like Microsoft offers on Azure via Autopilot. That if you buy an Apple phone from the Apple store they can pre-provision your Esim from the factory. esim surely will be the future, but for now. I want to keep a sim slot . I travel A LOT. and swapping sims to a temporary country specific one for better, cheaper plans is a must for me.
I just got the 14 Pro Max and had more trouble with activating an eSIM than I ever did with a normal SIM card. I suspect that Apple is “working” with the US intelligence community and hence they were encouraged to remove the physical SIM.
I prefer Android, IOS and the Apple watch will lock me down to Apple forever 🔐
Durability improved a lot with the 14 over previous models with the internal changes. Important for me as I keep my IPhones (and pase them through the family) until the last security updates - giving 6 years of life. I love the much improved stability for videos. And the dynamic island looks interesting. I'm upgrading now because I don't want usb c - we have lots of lightning accessories that work perfectly (like my lightning MMCX cable with in line dac and mic to make use of Apple's better wired output, with truebit audio than my android phones). Also. I find lightning easier to inserts and more secure. And I've had issues with the different spec usb c cables. Plus I never transfer data using a cable - it's all cloud for me these days. The ability to transfer esims using Bluetooth yourself with iOS 16 is handy too.

That segue into the bit about the dynamic island was smooth as hell.
This is the only iPhone 14 review that I’ve watched. Michael is always unique in his presentations.
I make sure to always get your take excellent review👏👏👏
Love your work Michael. Thank you.
eSIM is pretty nice. I use two phones (One without camera for work purposes) and i have always hesitated to buy a phone case or even a new phone because of the sim card inconvenience. Now i don't have to remove my case and fiddle the sim card every-time i switch phones.
The esim thing was definitely annoying, but I just had to do some research since I'm traveling abroad in 2 months. The switch with TMobile too was quick!
Long time fan of Mr. Michael Fisher here. Even back in his days with PocketNow, his reviews were always the ones that I most looked forward to. That remains true even still. This guy could make a review of a double A battery and I'd still watch it just for the story telling element and his unique and always interesting delivery of the product.
Loved the video. Thank you.
I setup my unlocked 14 Pro yesterday on T-Mobile transferring everything from my unlocked 13 Pro. eSIM setup on T-Mo was a breeze and the 14Pro was restored with apps/settings/data and ready to go in about an hour. Remember to change your phones name though before you repair Bluetooth devices.
I will be very interested in seeing if the screen will have burn in...I didn't think of that until you mentioned that
Hahaaa shout out to office space !!😂 4:33
The Office Space reference had me laughing out loud, just brilliant.
Wish you made more videos but I understand you've gotta life so continue to live it!
Great review, filled with thoughtful analysis and beautiful b-roll just like you always provide. I do have a question for you. Obviously Apple can't do Dynamic Island on old models but... do you think they will do nearly the same with the existing notch and just call it Dynamic Notch or something? 🙂 Seriously though, would seem like they could adjust the position and size of what software is doing now have the feature on all devices.
im speechless...your creativity is mind blowing
The Dynamic Island was a reason why I upgraded from my 12 Max. Making the notch useful was a great idea. I'm glad Apple didn't copy other manufacturers by adding a pinhole design. Crash detection was one of the main reasons why I also bought it. Overall, I'm happy with mine. This was the phone I wanted to hold out for before I had no choice but to buy my old 12.
Was waiting for MrMobile review for a long long time...
Mr Mobile, Installing an esim while traveling is as easy as downloading Airalo app. Before a recent trip, I’d used the app to purchase and activated an esim. As soon as I’d landed, I had service. I shared your esim concerns, then I found Airalo.
Omg the office space reference. Amazing lol
I enjoy your video’s. Great work!
Awesome as always
I'm so glad I don't have to deal with with a hole punch on my mi9t. The pop out camera is still going strong almost three years now btw! Wish these would have caught on but instead people were scared about durability issues.
