Very little difference… except for pro-raw on the 48mp Sensor. It makes me really feel like my 11 Pro Max is worth keeping. And the price. Think 11 Pro Max and an iMac… or just a 14 Pro Max 🧐

I'm honestly surprised to say I prefer the style of processing on the 12 Pro Max most of the time. While the 14 Pro is technically better in many scenarios, the super sharpening really doesn't look good. And I'm not willing to deal with the headache of 70mb files. Another quirk I noticed comparing my wife's 14 Pro to my 12 Pro Max is that the 14 Pro often slightly under exposes images. They're still exposed properly but on the darker side. Lastly when comparing dark areas of the frame of interior shots, the noise/grain has only marginally improved. 2 years used to be a colossal difference in camera performance.

@@PeterbFree Or you could pick up a used 12 pro max very inexpensive. 11 pro to 12 pro was a big leap in cameras and battery. I have 12 Pro Max. Wife had 11 pro max and just upgraded to 14 pro. We use our cell phone cameras professionally and the difference between 11 to 12 was big.

The amount of time you took just to do this video is incredible 👍🏻, this was the comparison I wanted to see you really went deep in detail and made me happier about my 14 pro purchase while most of the other reviews took 1 or two photos and said they looked the same!…I love to watch these videos because it tells me the strengths and weaknesses of the cameras and while it sucks that in some things got better in some situations it got worse but I’m still happy with the 14 pro :) overall a great camera , just needed some software tweaks here and there, good job once again !

Love the comparison to multiple generations of devices. Many of us don’t upgrade devices every year, so the multi-generational comparison is truly useful. Doing the same for laptops, etc. would be great. Just think about how long people keep their devices (3-5 years) before upgrading. Then use that timeframe as the basis for the comparisons. That would be huge for anyone trying to decide if they should make the investment to upgrade. THANK-YOU!

Outstanding video! You are a huge contribution to the consumer electronics community. (I found your channel YEARS ago when researching the OWC ThunderBay DAS, and decided to buy based on your video) I gotta say, even on the examples where you specifically say the 14 doesn’t look much better, in almost every example it is noticeably sharper and more natural compared to the others on a 32” UHD monitor. I wouldn’t say they look “>$1000 upgrade” better, though.

I appreciate these in-depth reviews. I am not one of those that does an “auto update” purchase on any schedule. These videos just help me cut through all the Apple hype and find out what is new. I do find it crazy that some make a spontaneous purchase decision based on a justification they were HOPING to find that has, in reality, little to no real benefit. I spend little more on a professional studio camera that will last for a decade. Apple has some great products but their mastery of hype exceeds their meaningful innovations.

Great test - thx. IMO the biggest differences are in lowlight situations where I see the 14 Pro in front. But daylight shots are very close. The dynamic range on iPhones is pretty average and I don‘t like pictures where the sky is blown out. As an iPhone 13 Pro Max user I must admit that S22 Ultra shots look better when it comes to sky details and saturation.

The expectation for camera on the iPhone is unique for each person. I have the 13 Pro. I went home back in February and spend time with family and it was night time. So it was an opportunity for me to try out the Night Mode with my 13 Pro. Everybody were blown away by the quality of the photos. I was shocked because I was a bit skeptical. I have to admit that the camera of the 13 Pro is impressive. I'm not a professional photographer by any means. Being an art major who was required to take Photography 101 back in the late 80's when digital camera was unheard of, I know a good quality photo when I see it. I've seen people with the most expensive cameras and have taken horrible photos. There is a science into taking photos. Understandign the lights and the F-Stop and aperture and so forth. A lot of stuffs have to be factored in and taken into consideration on how the photo is being taken. To sum it up, my 13 Pro does what I expect it to do and I'm pleased with the results. Great informative video as always!

Dang, awesome video, amazing detail and transitions are top notch. Thanks guys! I especially enjoyed the Night mode comparison, I had a suspicion that the newer iPhone’s night shots are actually darker and moodier than the 12 Pro Max’s, and I was right!

Great video , decided to watch this as me and my friend seem to have noticed the 13 picking up more detail in the background of photos over the 14 pro max by comparing them , it’s a bit odd , your comparisons seem fine , you reckon there is something we are missing ?

I think we have reached the development in phone cameras that there isn’t a truly noticeable difference between a camera from the same company unless you go 2-3 generations newer. The only way to see such minute pixel peeping differences is to put them side by side, but those days of taking a photo with a new phone and instantly knowing it was way better without needing to compare are over. Bad for tech enthusiasts however good for everyone. It means your current phone feels ‘good enough’ for longer and there’s less pressure to get a new one. This is actually the best thing for the environment tbh. It’s also the reason I felt very little need to upgrade from my pixel 4xl. Even though the new phones (pixel 6, iPhone 13 Pro Max, Samsung s22U) had finally surpassed it because the hardware differences just couldn’t be overcome with software any longer, the pictures it still put out where plenty good. That’s why devices like the pixel 6a can still take great photos that 95% of people would be happy with Sorry for the long rant

Could you make a video comparing ip14 pro using the default xamera app vs halide or moment especially those with 48MP mode (not shooting raw of course). I want to see if 3rd party apps using 48 Mp are any better and more storage friendly than pro raw pictures

  • @chrisak49

The biggest reason to upgrade to 14 Pro is the 48MP ProRAW shooting. The images are just next level above what you can get out of a 13 Pro. You’ll see the potential if you edit in Lightroom.

  • @chrisak49

    @chrisak49

@@mootsym The pro raw shots are designed to be flat compared to JPGs. ProRAW removed all of the post processing and allows you to do most of the editing to make the photo the way you want it. iPhone Photos editor is ok but Lightroom Mobile is the industry standard.

11:03 That's not how focusing works. If it made a difference the background in the 14's shots would be blurrier. What I think happened that either in the previous gens they artificially blurred the background for portraits or just the lens or processing got improved. Where the autofocus shows is the sharpness of the faces, that only. That focal length of lens focuses to infinity at 1 m or less, so there's no real blurring there, anyways. I don't get the obsession with blur. It's kitch, these short lenses preserve all they can while not catching anything particularly well (like "f/8 and be there"), they are not large cameras. A slightly larger sensor with a larger denominator in the f/ stop could improve the selfie quality, add EIS/OIS for low light. Beauty effects/blurs really should be optional and improved a lot as well (but this is nothing more than an opinion, ofc).

I made a massive jump from iPhone 7 Plus to the 14 Pro Max, so I'm happy! but seeing this comparison, I think Apple did not had much time to work in the new 48 MP sensor. Perhaps a future software update will have notorious changes in video and photo quality.

these "tech reviewers" kind of need a reality check. saying that the 12 pro max "sucks" is not true at all, yes obviously the 13 and 14 will do better but the 12 still has a fantastic camera, even the 11. i just upgraded from a 6s plus to the 12 pro and the difference is actually mind-blowing, the camera is incredible. the upgrade from the 12 or even 11 to the 14 is not worth it.

Can anyone answer these questions regarding the shortcut to convert Pro Raw into HEIF? How close is the new file size compared to standard HEIC pics? Is it about the same? *Is there any loss in quality in the converted Pro Raws compared to the non-converted ones?* Does pro raw look worse than HEIC modes prior to editing for color and contrast? Do you have to use Lightroom etc to do that editing or is the editor on iPhone sufficient? Do you have to manually enable pro raw every time you re-enter the camera app? Do you have to manually select the shortcut to convert each picture? Asking cuz I prefer the regular pics on 13 to the slightly oversharpened 14.. but If pro raw 48mpxl looks best and it’s as seamless as shooting with the normal camera- then that’s a no brainer to get more megapixels.

As someone said, it’s the 48 megapixel shots that are absolutely stunning! If you’re not into working with your photos and printing high quality or watching on a bigger screen it’s of course less interesting to upgrade from 12 or 13. I think most won’t use the 48 mp option. But I will 😊 Oh, and I upgraded from XR so everything is better for me..😂
