Disclaimer: Apple have loaned me the iPhone 11 Pro Max, but have no editorial control over this content.
My thoughts and experiences with the new iPhone 11 Pro Max camera for photography! I've had a pre-release version of the iPhone 11 whilst out in Japan and have been putting it through its paces on various photography modes. I've been loving the variety of shots available using the three focal lengths and improvements to the shooting interface, mimicking that of a rangefinder camera, such as my Fujifilm X100F OVF.
For the most part, it's been incremental improvements and updates throughout the hardware for an overall positive experience. Unfortunately, there are still a few negatives that continue to remain on iOS disappointingly.
I'm looking to make some more iPhone 11 videos very soon, so make sure to subscribe to my channel if haven't yet done so!

One life changing tip. Start wearing sunscreen. Like , right now! Your skin has a lot of freckles ( UVA damage) that predisposes you to deadly skin melanoma. Plus , if you start now you’ll look great in 20-30 years from now due to lack of further photo damage ( wrinkles , fine lines , brown spots) Japan has some great sunscreens. An SPF of 50+ and a PA ++++ is recommended

Thanks for an excellent very thorough review. I’ve had my iPhone 11 Pro for just a few days, and moving up from an iPhone 8, everything about it is better. I’m delighted with my purchase. As to the appearance of the three lenses, my biggest complaint about Apple devices in general is that they so frequently allow function to follow form. In this case, for a change, they have that form follows function, which is what they should do in virtually every case.

I agree with your impressions of how shadows and highlights cannot all be brought out / toned down all the way: they look dull, lacklustre, plain and unphotogenic. When I process my RAW photos (Pentax K-3; I used darktable to process) I don't take out all the blown areas, or it looks really boring. From all the iPhone 11 photos I've seen on KZread, this is exactly what the night vision on iPhone seems to be doing. Making flat daylight shots of night scenes.

Thanks for a great breakdown. I think to your point on the ultra-wide...I think it's going to have the same effect GoPro had on video. Suddenly every video is super wide...But I think it will just be a phase, because shooting wide makes faces a bit strange and doesn't always do the best job capturing the story you want to tell. Thanks again...I'll stick with my Xs.... for now. :)

Good job! The point you raised on the ultra wide angle’s possible effect on the digital photography scene is rather interesting. A question that isn’t really specific to the 11pro, but in between zoom markers 0.5x &1x or between 1x & 2x, is it actually using the wider lens plus digital zoom before switching at 1x & 2x? That would mean that to have the best quality it’s better to toggle instead of using the wheel, correct?

Agreed that Pro should have RAW as an option in the native camera app, I'd also like an advanced option that provides the settings in the camera app itself rather than the settings app. In regards to 16MP, they'll be releasing Deep Fusion in a month or two and thats supposed to create a 24MP picture. If it works as well as they claim that would negate the need for higher megapixel cameras.

hey Joe! thanks for having created this great video! I agree with you that i really want a RAW or DNG format in the native photo app :( i alway try to take them from Lightroom mobile but as you know you cannot use all the features from the camera on this app but just capture the image in DNG... I have a question for you if you can clarify this it would be great. If you use the native camera app, do you think that using the regular JPG format is much much better than capturing the photo in HEIC? what would be your advice ot these 2 file formats?

Really dig this review, but I’ve been having second thoughts about RAW (on phones)., even as a photographer myself: The biggest strength of the new iPhone is the imaging processing, since hardware is limited by the small sensor and minuscule lens. However, when we shoot raw, essentially, we lose all the post processing done by Smart HDR. While we do get more data for post, I think it simply removes the main advantages the cellphone camera had and just makes it like any other camera system, but with a worse, tiny sensor. Do you think it’s viable to use the JPEGs (processed) from the iPhone, which are still very natural, to make our own edits with LR?

I've been considering buying a high end phone almost entirely for the camera. Huawei is a good contender but I dont like the blurry filter when taking pictures of people (blurs ALL imperfections). I am not a fan of apple products but the camera is on another level and the video quality is still the best... Samaung is a good contender too... I would like to wait for the google pixel 4, it could be the best choice out of them all... For the camera alone, which would you go for? Thank you for this video.

just some huawei user here. fyi the blurry filter can easily be turned off gradually from 100 to 0. the leica cameras in the huawei phones are extremely good and -for me- unbeaten at low light environments. check the ratings at dxomark.com. plus the price-performance ratio almost always speaks against iphones. if you want a phone entirely for the camera, you may consider something else than the 1000$+ 11 pro. For example, the huawei p30pro costs less than half and has a bunch of pretty cool features like reverse wireless charging a huge battery (sometimes i don't charge for 2 days or so) and very fast charging (less than 30 minutes from 20 to 80%). The google pixel 4 could be a really good choice but it's also gonna be 1000$+

There are some great apps that shoot in RAW and use the hardware. Support developers, the whole point of apps are to get stuff that the niche market need. The average consumer does not need RAW. Whether it is called Pro or not is not relevant as understanding marketing, it is simply a moniker.

Great review and I agree, it should have RAW photo’s mode to be called pro. Would also be nice to get a higher resolution.

OT: I’m experiencing a problem with iOS 13 on my iPhone Pro Max, when I tap on the red button to hang up a call, often the display doesn’t recognize the touch, forcing me to tap once again. I’ve already changed the phone but the problem started again after few days. Anyone of you is experiencing the same bug ?

Simply swipe left on the home screen to access the camera app. It’s much quicker than pressing the camera icon.

An interesting, balanced review Joe - thank you. I can see the advantages and ease of automatically engaging the Night Mode, rather than having to turn it on, but I have the Huawei P20 Pro and I often use Night Mode for daytime pictures to achieve an extended dynamic range. Have you had chance to compare how good the iPhone Night Mode is compared to the P20 Pro? - Cheers - Peter

For higher dynamic range you would use the HDR mode on the iPhone. This can be turned on manually.

I just ordered the space gray one. I wanted the green one but I was scared that I would have gotten tired of it quick like I had done with the gold iPhone. XS max. but then again I have the space gray MacBook Pro and I have the space gray Apple Watch so I kinda. just wanted all of colors to match! and also I'm definitely not a fan of the camera lense either.. but when the 2020 iPhone comes out they will definitely look good with iPhone 4 sanwhich look... I literally cant wait!!!!

Every phone is an incremental upgrade each year. Even when it gets a hardware redesign there's always something improved and something new added. In the early days it may have seemed like there were big leaps on the upgrades and innovations but that was all introductory. But now that advanced tech is everywhere, what improvements and innovations we do have have to be doled out little by little. If each upgrade HAD to be big you'd get a new phone successor every 2-3 years instead of every year.

Thanks for the excellent review! Quite apart from the superb video features this phone might appeal to Digital SLR buyers who only ever intend to use a kit lens. The common kit lens is 18-55 mm so quite similar to the range of the iPhone 11 Pro.

Not with the native camera app, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a third party app enable it. Filmic Pro's new version will allow filming from at least two at the same time, which is awesome!
