iPad Mini 6 Months Later! The MOST Confusing Tablet Ever?!

Ойындар

I've had the iPad Mini for 6 months now, in that time I've gone through many cycles of loving, and hating, this tiny little tablet.

Multi year iPad mini owner. Even though it is a paradox, Everyday Dad is right about the size being its strength and its weakness. Mini is for a specific use cases. Unlike iPad-Ipad Air-Ipad Pro where there's a bunch of features and specs that differ, you're still getting a very similar screen size experience, Mini's size is a specific viewing experience that is only going to work for certain people. IMHO do not buy it if you're looking for a device you can add a keyboard to, you'll be wishing you had bought bigger. IMHO Mini is meant to be a full time handheld tablet. Almost everything you'd do on a phone but with an immersive screen size.

The mini is made for pilots, we use it in general aviation for a sort of "sat Nav in the sky" it shows us airspace, approach plates of airports, checklists and many more. The mini is well sized for mounting to a yoke in a cockpit or with a suction cup. In commercial aviation alot of airlines provide training via an iPad now and certain airlines will mandate you have at least 70% charge on them, so carrying the mini around is really handy as a pilot. I hope this gives a different perspective.

I love my iPad Mini! Have had it almost a month, and it’s been perfect for the reasons I bought it - lightweight to carry around for classroom teaching and art demos, absolutely great size as a day planner, easy to use for reading, and it’s perfect for drawing. I own an iPad Pro 11 inch as my main “art studio” device, but the Mini is so light, compact, and easy to take everywhere, it’s been an amazing addition to my work setup. I’ve even been able to sketch or finish projects on the go that would otherwise have waited until I could sit down at home.

I just got the mini last week and so far loving everything about it. I mainly got it for a travel tablet. Hubby and I take long motorcycle trips and I like to tinker with photos in the hotel at night and do a little web surfing on the road. Also finding some fun uses around the home for it as well. As long as you aren't expecting it to do the work of a laptop you won't be disappointed...I have a laptop for that!

Am I the only one for whom the 64GB is more than enough? Even my phone (with 128GB) has only around 50GB used. Everything (photos) gets uploaded to OneDrive from my phone and only documents I have on my iPad (Air 4) are documents in Noteshelf (I prefer it over Goodnotes mostly because of Croatian recognition). I have all of my work notes from the last 4.5 years (I'm on my 16th 75 page notebook, I reference old notes a lot), all my university books, class presentations and notes and still only have 20ish GB used.

My sad M1 iPad Pro, with 1TB of storage (more for the 16gb of ram rather than the storage), has 52gb of the 1tb used. (blargh). Of course if Apple had actually, you know, done anything with iPadOS that would USE an M1 and 16gb of ram as I presumed they would when I bought it, (because why else would they put that in an iPad?), I'd probably be using more of that storage. I obviously could manage on 64gb. And especially so if I eventually give in and get a mini as a toy to take some of the "play" youtube/internet stress off of my phone. But I agree that in 2022, 128gb really ought to be the baseline. I looked and Amazon has a Toshiba 128gb nvme 2230 m.2 drive for freaking $15. Flash storage under 512gb is just not expensive anymore, despite what Apple would have you believe.

When my work Windows laptop started to play up and I decided I needed a new machine I decided to opt for the Surface Pro 8 which is an excellent laptop/tablet hybrid. It's actually pretty good as a tablet without the keyboard but not a device you could take everywhere with you. I miss having my iOS apps on a tablet (my partner inherited my older iPad Pro) so I came to the conclusion the next best thing (based on form factor) is the iPad mini (the 256Mb one). It will also replace my e-Ink Kindle Oasis for daytime use (the Oasis is a perfect evening companion without its blue light) and allow me to jot short notes when my Remarkable isn't about. For me, this is a perfect setup! I just now need to decide what to do about my iPhone - with an iPad mini I can take anywhere I don't need/want a big screen, an entry level smaller device will do.

Also approx six months, it has become my daily companion, use my iphone less @home. Ideal for reading, annotating, watching video’s (in particular at night and in bed), small footprint, low weight, decent battery, make it the ultimate portable device. My main negative is the lack of a smart connector and keyboard. Typing on the screen is ok for small things (such as this comment) but I am regularly frustrated when the mini keyboard appears… it’s totally useless… (and I can’t seem to get rid of it). Agree with you on storage, 128 should be the minimum (got the 256 to future proof).

If the size of the Mini bothers you, the issue is probably use case. The Mini is a case study in strategic trade offs in consumer tech. You give up the big multitask-friendly screen and the ability to connect a keyboard case. You get increased portability, a better writing experience with a stylus, and the ability to more practically use the device when you’re somewhere like the subway

I love the size and portability, but I hate the non-optimized screen usage. Some stuff are way too small and there’s no way to increase text size in many apps. Letters on them are smaller than on my phone. Also, all the unused space on the Home Screen just feels badly designed. I often can’t correctly click on the red button to fast forward KZread videos, it takes many tries and it’s frustrating. The Mini has soooo much potential of being more user friendly, but it feels like Apple doesn’t give a f***. It feels like a child who can really do good at school, but does his best to fail all the classes. I’m debating if I should return this iPad Mini cause of all that…

Two short weeks and I was reprogrammed. So I bought another copy. And it has been my sidekick since then. Has its limitations. No Promotion. Screen is sort of lacklustre. Battery life is "OK". I agree with your comment about the 64 GB model. At times I do not have access to wi-fi, therefore I opted for the larger memory. For my personal use, the iPad mini 6's size and power is perfect for my work-flow. I mainly use it for note taking, reading email, and in-the-field photo editing. Admittedly, I did not expect to use the mini to watch a lot of video content. Over time, I realized I am using it more than my smartphone or my larger tablet or desktop to watch videos. The processor was surprisingly powerful enough to handle high-res photos (32 MB) with Lightroom and Photoshop, and handled all my 4K drone video footage. Anything that needs more processing power or extensive typing, is done on my iPad pro or desktop. People that complain about the product do not need to purchase the product unless of course the product fails to deliver what it promises - know what you are getting before purchasing! I have no regrets with my purchase. I was fortunate enough to try the ipad for a week before purchasing my own.

My preferred car is a 2012 model year and does not have a modern infotainment system built in (which is a plus for me) so my iPad mini is my infotainment system. Always sitting in my car with a little self made holder, conveniently controlled by touch or with a trackpad right below the gear lever. It’s basically apple car play pro max (to follow apple naming schemes) . I even started to use it in my company car on longer trips instead of the here available apple car play. And since I have it with me anyway if I take the car I found countless use cases for it I could have never imagined.

most of the negatives here (and from other reviewers) come from looking at the mini from the wrong perspective. because its small and light it excels at mobility and content consumption over productivity. you can hold it comfortably for hours lounging on the couch/in your bed/on the go etc which makes it perfect for videos/youtube/ebooks/facebook/instagram/web browsing/games, etc. and the interface scaling issues are moot if you will spend most of your time in full screen on single apps (which lets be real, this screen too small for splitting up into side by side anyway and if thats important, you'll likely go with a bigger model)

I use mine in permanent landscape mode in split screen and it's the best at it. I tend to use safari/notion or kindle/notes and resume entire books on it while handheld the mini (important side note: this is possible thanks to the floating keyboard). I suppose it's good or not according to your preferences, but to write (despite its obviously not as fast as to type in a physical keyboard), it's the perfect comfort choice when you want to do it but not sitting at your laptop or with a bigger iPad.

I keep wanting a new mini, even though I think the only reason I want the new one is so that I can share one pencil between it and my iPad Pro--rather than having to keep track of two of them. That said, I am definitely interested in getting one for that centerstage feature, man. That just looks super sweet. I hardly ever use my mini, except when I know that my Pro will be too big for the space I am going to be working in/with; however, when I do want to use it for specific tasks, such as reading comics or e-books, I can't want for a better device to fill that need. I hate carrying around my 12.9" iPad Pro when I don't plan on using the full display for things like drawing or managing my discord servers, mostly due to the weight of the device in a case--but the mini is just the right size and weight that I can slide it into a hip holster and not even blink. It really can be dead useful at times when the Pro is just too big and bulky. That said, if Apple announced that they were coming out with a 16" iPad Pro for artists and other creative professionals... it would become my third wife--not even kidding.

I think it's the perfect size for me as I have small hands and it's a good price. However, as said in the video, the only bad thing I have for this device is the storage. Also, if you find yourself editing a lot of documents and answering emails, use that Moft stand and flip your iPad into portrait orientation. You won't mind the smaller screen as much. If this iPad started with 128gb base storage and had a promotion display, it would be an easy buy. I've used a few of these in the apple store and I noticed how laggy and slow the screen was. And i'm not even used to high refresh displays as all of my monitors and my laptop are 60hz so something is definitely up with the screen. Also, Apple is just being Apple and providing a low base storage with not quite enough and a higher end with too much storage to justify getting more money from people. It's a pretty dirty tactic but effective.

Great review, interesting and enjoyable. Something that you have that range of reactions must be doing something! I just got the ipad mini 6th gen and loving it. Its replacing my ipad air 2021 (which is going to my daughter, though she doesn't want to use a stylus so I get to keep that). This is the first ipad mini I've had and it's brilliant. I knew that 64gb is fine for my use. Though 128gb would he nice to have. This ipad mini because of its size, apps and stylus access is becoming my combined organiser, book, article and news reader; video explorer & player; idea formulation tool; audio player; TV controller...I haven't even tried games yet.its brilliant. I use a stylus a lot. The magnetic attachment of the Apple pencil on the side makes a big difference, it's very easy to just take the stylus, use it and then put it back. And the touch id button is in a handy position for me. The "paperlike" screen cover gives the surface more of paper rather than glass when using a stylus. I have a few wireless keyboards, my favourite being aa large ergonomic Logitech keyboard with three buttons to switch between devices and supporting windows and mac book layouts. It works with every Bluetooth device I've tried. But I can't really really myself using a keyboard with the ipad mini, the stylus and thumbs are my preferred input for a device this size. Though I do have folding and small keyboards (another from Logitech is like a small, light, laptop sized keyboard, with fantastic keys and again a 3 button device switch. I'm glad the apps are closer together on the home screen. If I look down, I can I see all the apps without having to move my head, to making selection easy. If they filled the screen I know (from past experience) and that I'd move my eyes from left to right to find apps. Not a great effort, but this way its less effort and having the apps spread across the width of the screen doesn't give me a benefit. One benefit I hadn't expected is that now I'm happy with to go with a smaller phone as I reach for the ipad mini at home in preference.

I had an iPad 2, traded for a cellular Mini 1 in 2014, which lasted me until 2019, when I got the Mini 5. I wanted to [again] try a larger tablet for notetaking with the Apple Pencil, laptop replacement, etc., so I gave my oldest child the Mini 5, and got myself the Air 4. I love it because I use my iPad for photo editing, LumaFusion and GoodNotes, but I'm highly considering returning to the Mini [6] because of its size. And, because I find myself not reading or watching movies a lot since I got the bigger iPad. I have begun to utilize Swift Playground, as I'm learning just because and because I want to assist when my kids when they start coding. So if you did a video on Swift Playground on an iPad Mini and Air that would be nice. The one thing that I'm thinking of keeping my Air 4 is because I'm looking to get a Mac Mini/iMac and thinking that an Air would be a better external monitor (when needed). I was more app to take my iPad Mini on travels then my Air, unless I knew that I was going to need the larger screen. I have a separate Bluetooth/Wired keyboard that I love, and I only use it when I need to travel and work or work remotely at the coffee shop.

I have been using IPad Minis for years, starting with the Mini 2 back in 2013, and I bought a Mini 5 (for just $299 new) just before the Mini 6 came out. I agree with all of your comments. The Mini is not for everyone. My Lenrich keyboard case is excellent, but some of the keys have been moved around, which causes frustration. The small screen makes multi functioning a bit less seamless. And there aren’t a lot of accessories out there for it. So why do I use my Mini far more often than my IPad Air? Or my Chromebook? Or my Laptop? It gets used more because it is just so much easier to grab and use on a casual basis. My Air stays on my desk, generally connected to my monitor, more of a desk top computer than anything else. I love my Mini! But I am also cognizant of the fact that 80% of what I use my Mini for could just as easily be done on my Fire Tablet 8, for 1/10 the price tag. Which is why I have a hard time justifying another $500 expenditure for a Mini 6. In my opinion, the Mini 6 is perhaps a bit TOO powerful for its primary usages. A mini version of the soon to be released IPad 10 would be fantastic, if they could keep the price down to the $300-$350 price range. Especially if it came with 128 gigs of memory!

I love my iPad mini 6. That being said it’s definitely not for everyone. You definitely have to manage your expectations with this device and know what your use case will be before you buy it. In my case, I have a work laptop and also an M1 MacBook Air for anything I need productivity wise. So I certainly don’t need to worry about a keyboard for an iPad. So, since I’m not using this iPad for work, it’s strictly for content consumption and that’s where it really shines. Small enough for me to take out of the house, be comfortable using it in bed watching videos. If I didn’t already have a kindle it would be the perfect size for reading as well. That’s not to say it doesn’t have its flaws. I agree about the UI, and it’s a shame about the lack of promotion, plus the screen could be a bit brighter.
