iPad Air 13 inch Teardown - T-AIR-able or Rep-AIR-able?

Ғылым және технология

Apple’s newest iPad Air is actually two Airs, both with an M2 chip, twice the base storage of the last model, and now available with an extra two inches on the Plus-sized screen.
Which begs the question. What does “Air” mean if not the lightest duty, and lightest weight device in a lineup? The latest Airs clock in thicker and heavier than the equivalently sized iPad Pro.

So much empty space inside. They could fit x1.5 battery and x2 speakers easily. So iPad Air means air inside.

The diagonal speakers are a major improvement, giving stereo sound in both landscape and portrait orientation. Stereo speakers on iPads was first introduced in 2012 with the first iPad Mini, with two speakers on the bottom edge (in portrait orientation). This gave stereo sound in the portrait orientation, which was the primary orientation for iPads at the time. The problem was you didn’t get stereo sound in landscape orientation. In 2015, the first iPad Pro came with quad speakers and an official keyboard. This slowly shifted the primary orientation from portrait to landscape. Of course quad speakers work in both orientations, but all of the others iPads still don’t get quad speakers to this day. The landscape speakers in the iPad Air 2020 solved one problem but created the other. Both speakers were on the left (portrait) or bottom (landscape) edge, so no stereo sound for portrait orientation. Stereo sound for both orientations finally come to the iPad Air for this M2 generation. The iPad Pros in fact have 8 speakers in total since 2018, a tweeter and a woofer at each of the 4 corners. If Apple markets the Pros as having 8 speakers, we should get 4 on the Air. Finally, I want to see an X-ray for the 11 inch Air, to see if the diagonal speakers has been implemented there as well. (I don’t think Apple would do this. They are lazy as seen in the 10.9 inch screen size of the Air. It is still 10.9 inch according to the fine prints. It’s not 11.0 inch. They most likely would use the same non-diagonal speakers from the previous generation.)

A bit of correction, iPad Pros have always had 4 speakers, but, since 2018, the two bottom speakers act as woofers, and the two top speakers act as tweeters. No matter the orientation, you’ll always the highs from the top speakers, and you’ll get the mids / low end from the bottom speakers

Well done. I would rather rebuild my 6 speed 2004 Explorer transmission (which I did). I imagine all the glue is water proofing. My Ultra 2 watch has a "water resistance" rating of 100 meters under ISO standard 22810. I will never go close to that. My 15 Pro Max is rated at 18 meters for 30 minutes. I did test that at Biscayne Bay FL Still works. Never had a doubt on the watch. But yeah - the tear-down is only 1/3 of the job.

Old school mobile phones and tablets could be operated by finger or stylus. I don't get why you're insisting it's not a stylus just because it's optional? I insist that it's not a "pencil", because it's not an encased stick of graphite and you can't write on paper with it like every other "pencil". Perhaps you should check the dictionary definition of "pencil", you may be shocked!

The air being heavier than the pro is such a late-stage Apple move it's almost funny. I remember when every Apple launch felt like Christmas day, now it's just: what old features are they going to pawn off as new and revolutionary this time? Like imagine releasing a "new" keyboard almost 10x the price of a normal one and the major "update" is that it now has a function button row... you know like every other keyboard ever. And of course it's not backwards compatible because they made a tiny size adjustment to justify it. And don't get me started on the pricing ladder that overcharges for basic memory upgrades to the point of criminality. God what a sad company it's become. I was an Apple fanboy for so many years, but at some point enough was enough.

Even the basic polycarbonate white macbook 15yrs ago had twice as many ports as a 2024 MBPro with a "pro" spec chip, and they make a song and dance out of giving you one extra port on the right hand side. They made such a good SoC with the M series and the marketing team's greed managed to ruin it skimping on cheap memory. Later this year they'll raise the M4 chips MBPro to 12GB because it's literally the cheapest memory they can implement now that industry standard is 16GB base, and they'll act like their fanbase should be happy about it 🤦‍♂ Happy to pay Apple base prices at a premium, just don't rip us off on sub par base specs and upgrades!
