Hey Jon and Sam, I noticed that recently TvOS has been getting more and more of the 'glass' type appearance to some elements. Control centre and the main menu in the TV App for example. To me this means that VIsionOS elements will be coming in other places soon too. Possibly the next iOS redesign too

I just wish that iPhones were as open as Macs. Why not allow people to install whatever they want when that’s what they’ve been doing for decades on their computers? Also, Android has always allowed sideloading, and it has never been an issue because most people will never tinker with their phones that much, and prefer to use the simplest way - the official store.

I listened to this on my drive to work and I had to pull over just to see your faces. Worth it!

Why is no one talking about how this week marks the 40th anniversary of the first Mac being announced? It seems like Apple chose this week in particular to launch preorders for the Vision Pro

Very excited to try it at home and then return it in a few weeks… can’t afford it right now but maybe will get it early next year depending on how much I like it.. definitely gonna start saving for it..

Just watched some video reviews of AVP (iJustine) and please don't move when screen recording. Not talking about the shake as that is going to happen. I am referring to the constant spinning around and looking all directions. Cannot wait for your video's on the AVP! I will have mine on when I watch your videos.

The difference to Apple is that they are a iPhone company not a Mac company’s. So allowing side loading apps on Mac means nothing

You should be able to AirPlay VisionPro to an iPhone or iPad and then screen record. That is my guess on how they did it with showing what is seen in VisionPro

These new fees from Apple for developers are just insane. If anything this just makes people thinking about becoming iOS developers not want to anymore.

They better have an open source exception. I think if you put ads in and/or monetize in some way, fine charge for downloads. But if there is just no way for people to distribute just hobbyist free/open source apps without risk of thousands per month if too many people like it, that's nuts.

Sam’s argument around 58:00 is a terrible argument. I agree with Jon that if you make an app and that app has 1.5 million downloads and you aren’t monetizing it, that’s your problem. Apple created the App Store, Apple has this massive customer user base that you are given instant access to. Being charged 22k/month for 1.5 million downloads is nothing. That’s less than $0.02 per download. This isn’t targeting small developers. This is maybe targeting people who are trash at business and can’t monetize $0.02 per download.

Every week I agree more and more with Jon, and less and less with Sam. However, I think the Core Technology Fee should only apply to Apps outside the App Store, that would make more sense.

I appreciate Jon typically tempering consumer frustration by providing a business perspective behind why companies make certain decisions, but this episode veers a bit into just caping for corporate interests in the app store/sideloading discussion. In this case he takes such a hardline position of like, naive faith in the free market without regulation. I understand the slippery slope thing TO A POINT, but we are such a long way off from that being the primary issue beyond current censorship laws in certain countries. No way no how is the Apple:Dev relationship an “equal and opposite exchange” 😂. Yes both parties benefit from eachother but the difference lies in the fact that Apple AS the only available marketplace on iOS devices holds the vast majority of the leverage in that relationship. The App Store could not exist without devs but there are THOUSANDS of devs. Apple can afford to fuck over any individual business at a whim, but outside of some developer guild/union type organization, developers do not have the power to provide a proportional pushback. There is vastly more take than give in that relationship, and no change would occur here WITHOUT regulatory bodies intervening. Additionally, you are painting this as if the slippery slope of unregulated free market capitalism is not just as valid an evil as governmental overreach.

What would happen if Microsoft said any program that was written for the windows computer we get a cut of?? Just because you make a device doesn't mean u own the device

So does the developer fees only hit the side load and alt App Store apps or all apps being developed? I could see Apple doing this to keep getting a piece for platform exposure in those instances but if that applies to all apps that is shitty.

I personally disagree on the controllers thing. I believe that controllers are a fundamental part of VR and haptics are essential. But, I do understand apples whole ease of use thing. As someone that’s been in VR for the past few years, no controllers is a pretty big deal breaker for me personally. I do think it’s the best given this will be most people’s first VR device.

The second half of this show was them vocalizing how much happier they’d be with android.

The Apple vs EU issue goes back to when they were forced to make changes and had a court at the last minute uphold Apple. That pissed off a few politicians who are now, trying to reign supreme over Apple. And notice how these changes are beneficial to Android. It’s a political game… and it’s all focused on Apple to humble them. It’s nothing more or less….

I think Apple did make a mistake not having controllers as an option to work and control the Vision. That pretty much means the Vision Pro will never be able to play great games, which is sad. With all that power, it could have been great. No third party game studios is ever gonna want to create games for it. How would you ever play Call of Duty without a controller? So I agree with the Oculas founder and think Sam and jern are wrong and think that is a huge mistake for apple pushing the Vision pro to the masses

59:12 I really agree with Jon here! That's exactly what Jon's said in his video about USB-C. It's nice that we have USB-C. But what's next? What are they going to ask next? I think a government shouldn't be meddling with a company. Apple build itself up, (from a garage nonetheless!) It's their platform! If they want you to buy apps from their store, i think that should be how it goes. Now, because the EU is pushing (and just keeps on asking.) Apple said: ENOUGH! I indeed, can understand their mentality from a business standpoint. I also get that it sucks for developers and consumers. But go towards the government and complain against them!

Who pays for software updates? Developers? How about Apple customers who pay a premium for product to not constantly pay for software upgrades. Apple customers pay for software, why should not developers!

The EU is overstepping their bounds and, to me, this is a slippery slope. There are unintended consequences coming if this keeps going and it could go too far, in my honest opinion.

1M downloads is not a "small developer", the tools You used (xcode), the servers hosting the files (binaries) all that has an expense. Obviously apple is exaggerating the fee to remove any incentive to go elsewhere, giving that option only to really committed group because they are forced. Do you really think the 99USD yearly fee covers all the expenses in apples side regarding your "smiley and good quote app" - no, so they are giving you an incentive to monetize the app, make a business out of it, if it has 1M downloads it is doing something right. I also think they made this fee because now every s**t comes with their own garbage app, Apple has to review them, server them, all the other backend stuff for what - less than 99USD a year, because often same developer has multiple apps.

Great video. I dont speak “legalese” so what am I missing? Isn’t Apple saying the first million downloads are FREE? One million. I respect how developers create great apps that makes money for both parties, but please stop saying Apple is wrong to determine fees, standards and actions apps must follow to use their platform. Mr Coffee can’t refuse to pay a dime, set up a table in Walmart and have topless strippers sell their machines in the store. You can’t walk into an office building, set up in an empty office, not pay the rent and start remodeling to fit your taste. If developers don’t like Apple’s fees or their “code of conduct” type regulations, don’t use the platform if they refuse to negotiate. That’s our business model here. Why is Apple treated differently? You just said KZread takes 40%! Why aren’t creators and the viewers demanding a free platform with no restrictions?
