One big selling point for iPad Mini for normal consumers I feel is that it is book-sized, its a small pocketable device like the kindle

The length of this episode is well worth the missed week! Hope all of the Geniuses had a good holiday season and here’s to a VR episode in 2024🎉 Happy New Year!

I use my iPad Pro as my computer instead of a Mac and I find much more value in it. Benefits over Mac are FaceID, super thin, touch display, App Store apps, dual rear cameras, cellular. I will admit I wish the battery life was better- however it’s not something that makes me want to stop using it. We DO exist and I’m grateful to apple for making changes like stage manager, the files app, usb transfer, you don’t have to use them but saying they shouldn’t be there is kinda dumb.

The title of this pod should’ve been “We’re Fixing the iPad in 2024”

If there were no artifacts, that’s when things get real scary.

If you start this episode 40 seconds into 10:27pm on December 31st, the first thing you will hear in the new year is Sam screaming

Sam is kinda missing the point. Those commercials were aimed at Windows users to switch from their beige PC boxes to an iPad. They were NOT trying to get current MacBook users to switch to an iPad as an "upgrade". Always consider who the target is when you assess if an ad is successful or not. And it clearly was successful.

However they should at least do little posts to keep the community updated as to if they are late or something is going on. The last time I think Sam moved and nothing was said, someone was sick and nothing was said. Im not asking for details but something to know they are ok/alright. And lastly I’m a big fan of the podcast hands down one of my favorites so every week I’m looking for to see my guys and if I don’t im just hoping that nothing bad happened. So just chill and leave that trash talk for 2023. Happy new year 🎉

My dual charger stopped working on a cruise and seeing that it’s lightening I had zero way to charge my iPhone 15PM and  WATCH! Was a pain in the a$$ for sure! 😅

I use my iPad Pro a lot. For my studies, taking notes, watching movies and series, browsing the web, FaceTiming, KZread, writing songs and “gaming”.

I totally agree with Jon that the 3 iPads and the mini starts at the lower end one

I agree except I’d say the iPad mini (or iPad SE) should get the A17 Pro, and the iPad Air (or just iPad) should get the M2. The iPad Pro should get the M3 ofc!

Sam, the iPad is a user experience that you just don’t understand, because of your user case. You aren’t the audience for the product. - I’ve had the M1 12.9” iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard and pencil as my sole personal computer for 3 years now. I love it. I’ve had MacBook Pros, I’ve had Window PC’s. I’ve owned an iMac and a MacPro Tower (the og cheese grater). For use as a simple personal computer, not a work computer, it’s been a really great experience. I love the apps on the App Store. I love my games. The Apple Pencil doubles as a joystick for some of my games. I love having my Apple Music in slide over while I’m playing a game, or browsing my tech sites. I pull up my KZread in pip mode and play a game with my video in the corner that I throw from one corner to the other whenever I want. - Look at it this way. People have been crying for innovation and fresh ideas on pc operating systems. To those people I say iPad OS is what you’ve been asking for. - It’s different. It doesn’t work like your computer. Its apps are different. Everything about it is different. And I love it for that.

If you look at the iPad Pro from the viewpoint of a work computer you will tear it apart. - If you approach it as diving into a new user interface and operating system, a rethinking of how we interact with an operating system. You’ll really enjoy it. - It’s not a traditional computer. It’s not going to be a work computer, But it’s a really fun experience.

Yeah except I think “iPad” should die and “iPad Air” should just become “iPad” and drop all the Magic Keyboard and cases etc. So that’s just for the Pro and for some people will be an incentive to upgrade

The only reason why Apple keeps iPad lineup congested and messy is because of money. They want that ladder that leads from lowest end iPad up to iPad Air or Pro. The larger gaps there are between the models, the easier it is for consumers to say they will not go up any more.

iPad has become the think differently computer for old people like your grandma and grandpa to get on Facebook and Snapchat 😅. I hear it so much from the older crowd asking me which iPad Pro to get because it’s so much better than a laptop and people dont need laptops lol

Will say editing photos in Lightroom on iPad is more enjoyable than on Mac. iPad version just missing a few features. But experience is way better on ipad

I think iPad Pro 12.9 Magic Keyboard DOES MORE, than MacBook $1K. It can DRAW (for $129+), that’s HUGE. It’s touch screen

Here’s the thing about iPad. To me it’s easier to buy. My credit sucks because of stupid decisions I made a few years ago. And with the economy the way it is, I have blown through the little savings I had for emergency repairs on my car. I don’t qualify for any type of credit line with Apple or any big box type store. Not for the amount of a MacBook anyways. I do however have good standing with my cellular provider. It’s a lot easier for me to make monthly payments to them. They only offer iPads though. So I got myself an iPad Pro 11 inch two years ago with the M1 chip. It does everything I need it to do. Got a nice keyboard case for it, and now it’s basically a mini-MacBook to me. A lot of folks can’t afford to drop $1,000+ on a MacBook. Or they have similar credit issues like me. So it’s easier for them to get their hands on an iPad over a MacBook.

10.9" iPad with a laminated screen for $599, iPad mini with a better display for $449, iPad Pro 11/12.9" for $799 and $999. To me, that makes sense. Also, make one Apple Pencil for $99.

I prefer my IPad Pro 12.9 inch because with the pencil I can pretty much do more than a laptop……I’d have to buy a separate setup to even draw and edit on the computer,So yes I prefer the Ipad and keyboard combo because I can do more than having just a laptop .

John’s breakdown of what the iPad lineup should be is absolutely correct! You have the mini the non-pros two sizes and the pros into sizes just like with the iPhone. The mini makes a lot of sense but it needs to be updated and improved on the regular iPads are fine and the pros are for people who want the very best there is. The iPad Air is confusing because it bleeds between regular iPad and pros. Get rid of it have the mini, 2 sizes of regular, and 2 sizes of pros. John is fully correct in this

Here's my iPad lineup for 2024 iPad Pro 11 inch - starting 899 13 inch - starting 999 iPad 11 inches - starting 599 13 inches - starting 699 iPad Mini 8,5 inches - starting 399

Sam is right and wrong about the iPad Pro. I use my 12.9” M1 iPad Pro with an Apple Pencil over my MacBook Pro all of the time for my casual computing. I have my iPad in an adjustable stand and that makes a world of difference. Yes, I use my 14” M1 Pro/Studio Display setup as my main computing setup, but the majority of my casual computing is on the iPad. Stage Manager has been nice, could still use a lot of work obviously. I always use the virtual keyboard or voice dictation, I never feel like I need to use a physical keyboard.

2:34:56 didn't expect to hear that, but I also didn't expect my dad would die in December, and I didn't expect my mom to make a little shrine thing to my dad either.

The iPad does not ship as a computer, you are right…. Who would buy an iMac Pro when the Studio is a better value. People buy what they want, especially if it’s discretionary spending.

Here's a suggestion for the ipad lineup Ipad smol = 8.3 inch and starts at 400$ (yes the mini becomes ipad regular) ipad big = 10.9 inch and starts at 500$ Ipad pro smol = 11 inch and starts at 699$ ipad pro big = 12.9 inch and starts at 999$ + Every 3 years ipad SE = 10.2 inch and starts at 300$

Homepod needs to be marketed as a Dolby Atmos "soundbar" replacement. Two homepods as a sound bar are the best. Apple Don't need a soudn bar two homepods kick a sound bars ass.

I’m more on Jon’s side here with iPad. I personally think it should be just three iPads, three sizes total, smallest is mini, regular is iPad, and larger is pro. That’s it. Three iPads. Three sizes. Papa John’s

Apple carplay is kinda nice. I have a land rover and apple maps is in my guage cluster.

I personally like the split screen, slide over and pip on the iPad. Since I have the Air 4, I have no experience of Stage manager, however it is great on my M1 Mac mini. I would say Siri is much worse than the iPad line. Back to back requests still have yet to work on my SE 2.

I think Jon’s right, Tim Cook isn’t real. Tim Cook is Steve Jobs’ best technological masterpiece creation and ultimate legacy. We will one day know this when his battery needs to be replaced.

Masimo pouching was from 2013. Apple hired some crazy tech guy that lasted 6 months and the Masimo tech guy left Apple to start his own watch company. When was the time line for tech for watch. Masimo made a watch to compete with Apple to start the legal process. What is real story?

The worst of this year was Apple is getting worse on pricing. Making it look like a value, but the upgrades necessary to use that full power are outrageous. So the value deal is actually a downgrade.

The voice sounds like Sam! Jon’s picks are “adulting” in action. Most people complaining about Apple using RCS, don’t even understand what RCS IS. Wow, I still can’t believe in 2024 Sam does not believe Illustrators, graphic designers and other artists are not “real” professionals. Final Cut Pro is NOT the only Pro app on the iPad.

Sam, your cost analysis on a computer is not the total cost of computing. That is why Apple Macs for years were $3-4,000 a computer per year cheaper to use than Windows computers. That cost differential to use Windows computers was reduced when Windows stole graphical interfaces from Apple, but even today training and technical IT support for any computer is still probably $4-5,000 per year. What is the support costs per year of iPads--even an iPad Pro? All those iPads whatever they cost are still less costly providing computing services than computers.

I still love my iPad Pro 11”. Don’t get rid of that.

I'm still running on my Mac Pro 2019. Still happy i bought it to be honest. Though it sucks that the PCI-E slots are only 3.0 while in the new one i believe they are 4.0. So the new Mac Pro 2023 might not be the best in terms of upgrading it in the future but it is very fast for sure! I guess the only good thing with that Mac Pro 2023 is for music producers who can have tons of audio cards in there (and fast storage.) On the video editing side, i'm not sure... But it's crazy that they don't have some kind of upgrade path. Even for people like me who have the 2019 version, the GPU upgrades are laughable!

Sam, is right. Doctors and medical people took up iPads in huge because they could compute in a portable tablet with little training for data input. How many other markets are like the medical market.

Keeping the entry level iPad and getting rid of the mini is ludicrous. Why keep an iPad with a sub par pencil and outdated screen ? Just make the iPad Air the base iPad , offer an iPad mini on that level , the an 11 and 13 pro and an iPad mini pro. The iPad mini is the workhorse and support device of many professions .

I work in the Visual Effects industry and know many people who use procreate professionally on the ipad pro, and I just started to use Nomad sculpt and looks like I will continue using it in actual paid projects… can’t do both of those things on a mac

dude just here to tell me about photoshop and blender lol… at least come at me with a real example like zbrush… I meant you can’t use procreate and nomad on a mac. If you’ve followed the beginning they were saying that ipad doesn’t add anything to mac. (Btw the industry wasn’t using mac until very recently, if you wanna talk details we can)
