Hello Sameer and Team, This is my profile: I'm Jay and I am an undergraduate student studying in the Indian Institute of Management, Indore. I'm currently pursuing IPM (Integrated Programme in Management). It is a 5 year program which awards an MBA degree at the end of 5 years. However, there's an option to graduate in the third year with a BA (Foundations in Management) degree. Ours is a very diverse program, we're taught Math, Statistics, Economics, Computer Science (Coding), Ethics, Sociology, Psychology, Law, Critical Thinking and a lot more. I am a 20 year old student and graduate with my BA degree in 2022 March. IIM Indore is one of the top 5 B Schools in India. The integrated program in Management (IPM) is the most selective Undergrad program in all of India. Around 24,000 people and more apply to IPM, but only 120 make it. I don't have a great GPA, it is currently at around 2.50/4.33. We are graded on a curve (all of our subjects). Our school has a triple crown accreditation - Equis, AMBA, AACSB. I am aiming for a GMAT score of 750+. It is expected. My work experience: I have interned previously in the Ministry of Defense in India. I was reporting to the Director of the corcerned lab. I am on my way to get a research internship in a university in Europe in 2021 summer. I am also a volunteer at an NGO in India, which helps rural and tribal people. We built them a road and distributed free meals during the COVID 19 lockdown. I am a core member at the Student Activity Council in my university. I am a member of the Investment Analysis Group, Gaming and Coding group, Music group in my college. My sports achievements: I am a national level swimmer in India. I had participated in and won many national and state competitions. I was known as a swimming prodigy. I started swimming at the age of 2. My interests: I like music, trading and investing, stock market analysis, boxing, powerlifting and learning new languages (I can speak 7). I really want to get into deferred MBA programs. My target schools are HBS 2+2, Stanford GSB Deferred Admission, Wharton MBA Advance Access Program, Yale SOM Silver Scholars Program, Chicago Booth Scholars Program, MIT Sloan MBA Early Admission Program, Columbia Business School Deferred Enrollment program. Please let me know about me chances here, and tell me what all can I change or add or implement to make my profile look better and more attractive to these B Schools. I have always wanted to do an MBA from the best Bschools of the world and I hope I am cut out for it (I'll work towards it). Thanks you. .

If you're really serious about an international MBA, not just for the degree but also for the transformative experience it offers, our recommendation would be to be patient and work for a few years first. Build your profile and only then apply. Or you'll feel unsure about completing what you started.

Here is my dilemma, most companies or most industries would require relevant industry experiences plus MBA so if you don't have any relevant industry experience, you won't be qualified. I feel like switching from a very different industry after MBA is so hard. I came from a mall management background prior to MBA. This background is more related to property management and real estate which I already want to avoid. I am interested in consumer goods industry yet my previous work experience is not that related because mall management is more of services vs consumers goods which is more of tangible products. My only shot is to be part of an MBA Management Development Program from companies who doesn't require consumer goods background yet this type of role is very rare and limited.

Messed up CAT 2020 .Fed up with non standard approch.Even it's normalisation .Please don't ask percentile.I am 25yrs old. Wanted to do MBA in Top college A,B,C for brand to offset my mediocre UG btech in ECE 2017 passed out. Academics till UG is (9/9/8) profile. NC- OBC (Not sure if 2021 I could get that certificate) 2017 campus placed Since then pursuing job in automotive and 3yrs by July 20.And no satisfaction in work and pay. Preperation wise I done well and enjoy every moment and I knew I can perform better.I am having inclination to come consulting/product manager. So my only weights are Considering for Brand and peer network alumni and long term prospects --- Please suggest me 3 options (Finance is not problem) I currently have - 1.Immediately switch job you aspire and do GMAT + CAT. 2.Persist in same company give GMAT. 3.Resign Job, stick to a time frame you make it in GMAT. 4.Any customised plan you suggest Thanks for reading .I am very kindful for your advice in above 4 options ...I am open to all options..wish I could call and take guidance..

Hey Sameer, been following you for a while and have been an ardent fan of your youtube videos too. I have a question. I'm an engineering freshman at a private university (the best one in the city of Bangalore) and not in an IIT. I've always aspired to eventually get an MBA from one of either HBS, Stanford, or Wharton. Currently beginning to enjoy my mechanical engineering major at my college and might pursue a master's in that. I plan on targeting top schools like Stanford, MIT, Caltech, and Carnegie Mellon (in the past, a handful of students from my very colleges have got admitted into these prestigious master's programs). Now coming to my main question, I stand at an obvious disadvantage over those of my similar application pool at these business schools, so would the fact that I have a masters degree from schools like Stanford, MIT, and Carnegie Mellon, make up for the fact that I didn't get my undergraduate degree from one of the IITs? Looking forward to your reply. Regards, Varun

Bschools understand that there's a difference between getting an undergrad vs masters degree from the same institution. So, don't get the degree to impress anyone. Do it only if you plan to use that masters degree to its fullest, without worrying about how it'll impact your MBA admissions chances.

It's not easy to get hired in top investment banks. Talk to current bankers to find out how easy/difficult it was for them to get in. That'll give you a better idea. Depending on your interest you can then choose tech or finance domains to work in.

I have a query regarding current MBA application process change due to pandemic. As number of prominent full-time MBA programs that is waiving GMAT test score from its admissions process. Can you please suggest what should be candidate's approach in applying for top colleges if he or she has average academic and thought to compensate it with good GMAT score? About me- I have done Btech in Computer science and have 6+ work experience in analytics domain. I have worked with IBM, EY & am working with American express. I have average academics.

Some are waiving off the requirement, others are not. So, you can still take the GMAT and try to score high. That'll open up more options. You already have several internationally recognised brands on your CV. That's a plus. Use that to your advantage and back it up with strong essays, highlighting your strengths and clarity of goals. Check out how others who've had low grades tackled the application process: www.mbacrystalball.com/blog/2017/08/07/low-gpa-success-stories/

Respected Sir, I have been following your KZread videos and website since long back, and I found them pretty impressive and useful at the same time. Sir I am currently in my 12th standard and possibly would be appearing by board examination by 2021, if this pandemic gets controlled. I would be further pursuing my Bachelor's in Business Administration (BBA) in India, knowing the fact that business, marketing & operations have always been my area of interest. I was always a MBA aspirant and watching your videos my interest gradually increase in this stream. If I want to target top B- Schools in the world, at least I need a job experience of 3-4 years. But in India as you would be aware that parents emphasis more to finish education first rather then getting into job. Also majority of top B School required job experience, in India getting a decent job also, isn't possible after a degree of ВВА. So now my family is forcing me to finish my bachelor's then to prepare for CAT and get to IIMs or XLRI etc. (But I want to study in abroad and find placement.) Is there possibly a way out of it, or is there any degree I can opt as a fresher, then do my MBA. Can I do a degree after my BBA which can help me get a decent salary, also it would help boost my profile. Then possibly I can opt my MBA from the best b schools across the world. For eg- Can I do a degree in Master's in International Business (MIB) as I have interest in International Relations, then go for MBA. Would it be useful to get a MBA after MIB. Is there any other options that I have or any other career advice that you would like to give as I am in my 12th? Also I might sound childish but sir is there any possibility then I do my BBA here in India. Then try getting to IIMs for MBAs. Then going abroad to further study in the top B Schools, choosing a specific course that does justice to my MBA. So that I would land up with a mouth watering salary in abroad itself. Is there any course or programs as such ? Sir your open for any suggestions & recommendation from your side, also feel free to correct me if iam wrong somewhere. Thanking You,

The best approach would've been to get a job based on your bachelors degree and work for a few years. If that's difficult, then getting an MBA from India, and working for a few years, before considering a second MBA is also an option that many candidates follow.

I am Jayasurya, I am doing my final year BE Mechanical engineering. Your videos have been so useful and informative, thank you for that. I am an aspiring entrepreneur with few Ideas and I was looking to do a masters in Human centered design in business context, as I wanted to create product and services based on human psychology and I want a business acumen to make it a viable product. So I came across a program called the DMBA from the California college of arts. It seems to be good to me. I could also find just the Human centered design masters program. Both almost cost the same, but is it good to do a MBA at this point of my career ? Or should I consider doing a separate masters degree first and gain some professional experience before an MBA? (Ps : I am looking to work for atleast two years after either of the program) So which would be best ? and do you know any better universities that offer a MBA of this kind ? Please give me your suggestions. I am hoping to hear from you soon.

There's always the risk in joining programs that look interesting on paper, but aren't mainstream enough to open doors in the real world. So make sure you talk to current students to find out the ground realities. If you're planning to work for 2 years anyway, then a masters degree would start looking less attractive, compared to an MBA.

For IT consulting, tech skills are more important to get started than an MBA degree. But you'll need to work for a while to build those skills first before you can add value as a consultant.

  • @MBACrystalBall

    @MBACrystalBall

    6 ай бұрын

Great question! Compensation in any country and industry depends on multiple factors, including but not limited to the cost of living. There's also a plethora of demand/supply aspects to consider. The more cut-throat the process is - for recruitment, increments, promotions, the better the salary. So look at any role (in and outside investment banking) with the same perspective. Also important to see what the IB salary in UK and Swiss will get you in those countries, compared to other roles/industries in the same countries. Perks like health coverage, liberal vacation policies would fall in that bucket. As an example, let's switch industries and consider tech salaries in Silicon Valley. They may seem outrageous to an outsider. But many working there would say it's just about ok to cover the equally outrageous cost of living (such as rent, schooling) in that region.

From countries like UK or Ireland? The reason is because I'm giving GMAT in few months so I will be late for MBA intake 2021. So either I consider an MBA in 2022 or else go for Masters in 2021. Also, should I try for JBIMS as well for next intake? Does the MMS make a good fit for me considering my age and a career in India?

Also, the budget you have will not be able to cover any of the good international programs, since even a good Indian MBA such as ISB is close to twice that amount. Better to continue looking for a good job, rather than spending all your savings on a degree with no guarantees.

You're right in saying that this isn't one of our focus areas. Also, we're not sure if this specialisation requires an MBA, which is more provides more of a broadbased management education. There are many cheaper and short term courses that may be sufficient to gain the relevant skills, rather than burning a big hole in the pocket. Have you explored those alternatives?

If you aren't sure about a career in that field, don't sign up for any course. A lot of folks do that, which results in the field getting oversaturated with graduates who neither have the aptitude nor interest in it. They signed up just because they thought it was a hot field.

It's not about being less or more valuable. Depends on the recruitment policies of the investment bank you're approaching. Some might be more open to it than the others, more so if already you have relevant skills. Many IT professionals who work with us for MBA admissions have CFA, but that didn't help them get into finance. The best way to learn about specific requirements of companies is by visiting their official HR pages.
