@@Fizhy You did brought up an interesting detail: Walton Lowe. I thought the newspaper article covering his death meant he canonically died but now that I'm rewatching that bit, it does feel weird considering in GTA 4 some police records of minor antagonists change depending on whether the player spares them or executes them. And just like Red Dead 1, that Rockstar game is loaded with an immense amount of details. Edit: My initial reaction upon seeing this video lays in the fact not many people are fond of theories regarding memorable characters of the Red Dead series. So seeing that to another person it made sense to some degree, made me question the theory since I thought it wasn't that good at first but gave it a shot anyway.

Marshall Johnson is such a grounded and honest character, probably one of the most down to Earth NPCs in a Rockstar game. He scratches John's back because John scratched his, no ulterior motives. The idea that he was a criminal in a past life just makes me like him more.

I like the idea of criminal turned lawman in a setting like RDR. As another commenter pointed out, the Valentine sheriff in RDR2 said "you don't hire a saint to catch a sinner." A former outlaw who became a lawman to seek redemption would understand these gangs and their motives far better than some goody two shoes who became a lawman or bounty hunter simply to show off how good they are.

Wyatt Earp made a deal with Cowboy Gang member Ike Clanton to capture known suspects of a stagecoach robbery, also members of the Cochise County Cowboys. But when a third unknown party killed their suspects, Ike Clanton became paranoid at the possibility of him being misunderstood for a rat (he technically was going to be, but anyway), so he spread rumors surrounding this robbery, particularly ones implicating Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp himself in it. Wyatt Earp made that deal for political reasons, he wanted to win the elections and become Sheriff, I think it was? The main idea here is that they both share some similarities.

He made some bad decisions after his first wife died but once he started, Wyatt Earp was the best lawman in the west, (he tamed Dodge City) until criminals crippled one brother of his and killed another and the justice he defended for so long failed him. So he handled it himself. I can't condemn him, especially for the time he lived in.

Just to add to the conversation, RDR1 had many reoccurring random encounters that would often spawn riding around, and could be done multiple times. One of them that comes to mind is the lawman who has prisoners escape from a prison transport wagon. It's always two prisoners going in opposite directions while fleeing the scene when you pull up. The lawman is usually in an injured stance requesting assistance. You can usually kill them both, kill one, and capture the other, and or possibly capture both before they get too far away. Upon completing the encounter successfully in which you've captured at least one escaped prisoner, the lawman will thank you and then proceed to execute the recaptured prisoner(s) with his gun. I bring this up just for the sake that the game's own world implies that it wouldn't be a stretch for Johnson to have "Defended himself" from the leader of the Walton Gang, and fabricate a story in which the gang leader was killed by Johnson after capture.

Thanks for this video. One aspect I’m glad you mentioned about Johnson early on is to quite rightfully question what allegiance(s) he would need to have if he (a) is lawman paid by the railroad/enterprise and (b) clearly needs to compromise based on the lack of resources required to maintain order. I agree with that these points are probably out of the scope of your video but also are important and are explored elsewhere e.g. look at the landscape that inspires the narratives behind Robocop and much cyberpunk (where OCP and large corps are effectively the railroad) and issues faced in most modern police tv shows (public perception, resources etc). It’s good point that RDR and RDR2 in a small way were able to emphasise that these were issues faced in the old west as well as in the modern day /later fiction.

Marshal Johnson having been appointed to Armadillo for 14 years doesn't make sense though, since we would and should have seen him both in 1899 and 1907 at one point. This should bring into question how old the treasure is, and if he had any involvement with the Del Lobo gang before 1911. Wish Rockstar had furthered his story in RDR2 even if we didn't get to see him. To my knowledge, there's no newspaper scraps or NPCs that even mention him in New Austin.

  • @josephstalin2606

There’s a letter in his office in the epilogue you can happen upon and it says that Marshall is “on vacation” while the Cholera breakout blows over. So it’s still consistent but obviously they needed an excuse for him to not be there so John doesn’t meet him before 1911 and cause a paradox. And New Austin in 1899 also being affected by cholera is non canon since it was obviously scrapped and the game tries its hardest to avoid the player going there before the epilogue and I take online with a grain of salt bc it’s clear Rockstar stopped paying attention to all continuity details when it comes to Online (like Sadie owning the very first horse Arthur gets despite it being explicitly said in the story that it wasn’t hers and belonged to one of the Odriscolls)

Better yet, save up for a PC so you can have all your games on one system! They can be pricey depending on the specs you get, but if you build it yourself (find a tutorial or see if any of your friends know how) you'll save a good bit versus a prebuilt.

Would love to see a rdr3 following the story of marshall johnson where he was a gunslinger, who indirectly brought the demise of his own town. As the game progresses you see the town slowly turn into the “living hell” he works so hard to avoid. This may happen around the time of rdr2. Eventually, his redemption is establishing, or rescuing, Armadillo where he ultimately becomes sheriff. Would be fun to see a repeat of some missions from rdr1, but playing as johnson. Also a good reason to bring back both the Mexico map, and the entire rdr2 map.

RDR2 map plus Mexico on the modern RAGE engine would be awesome. RDR2's version of New Austin looked great but I'm certain they've made even more upgrades to the engine's visual fidelity capabilities during the development of GTA 6.

*I think Marshal Johnson is mostly a no-nonsense realist.* If he were a moralist he would have tried to directly stop Walton's gang or gangs before it even if he was outnumbered, probably resulting in the death of him, his sparse deputies, and many of the residents of Armadillo. Because Marshall Johnson can see things clearly as they are, and seems intelligently reserved enough to calculate the powers he has, and hasn't over the situation; I think he mostly tolerates the Walton's gang as long as they don't push it too far in his town. He has no power to completely stop them, so he compromises to make at least some deals to keep the citizens of Armadillo safe until he feels he has the power to make changes. In the end his main objectives are this: 1. Keep the citizens of Armadillo safe 2. Clear the county from outlaws 3. Gather a little pension for his old days to never have to do this line of work ever again So Marshal Johnson is a *good but corrupt Marshall* who tries to do good, but accept he has to be as dirty as his surroundings makes him to be to at least make some positive changes in the end. Which he eventually succeeded in. He would have not survived Armadillo if he only tried to make positive changes but did not accept the reality he faced.

When The Marshall says he doesn't want to be no policeman, it is important to note that he isn't a policeman. Policeman is an entirely different thing compared to a Marshall. A Marshall can function as a policeman, but they are far more than simply that.

My thought is when Johnson was younger, he once rode with the Walton gang so he knew members of the group, thus his seeming unwillingness to engage them without backup. This would also explain why he’s good in a shootout and why the map might have his initials on it. He was tasked with burying the stolen goods but before the gang could collect, something happened and they had to split up. He and a couple others made a map to the treasure and hid that map, but in the breakup, Johnson took the opportunity to ditch the gang. Because of his skill and knowledge of the area, he was hired as sheriff and now that he’s a lawman, he has no care to collect the stolen goods but also can’t let the Walton gang get it
