Finally someone goes in depth about inverting a subwoofer in relation with port area

Thanks for this great explanation. I'm sitting here answering along to your questions lol. Since I currently have 2 separate boxes, I may invert one to try and increase my range, and my whip is an '02 so it is very fitting with the tines 😂😂

I'm not a fan of inverting a subwoofer, but it does look cool sometimes. Great info on the subject I was wondering if their was any advantages. Keep up the good content.

Tip… if you want to try inverted and don’t want to build a 2nd box or change your current box’s tuning find the total displacement for all drivers used and find something of equal displacement to put in the box (just make sure you don’t block the inner port opening in anyway and is secured it somehow so it doesn’t move around inside the box and make noise). 2x4’s & a couple correct length screws work pretty well.

Thanks a bunch MB! I now finally, because 'box gets bigger/port got smaller' decided NOT to invert. I endlessly doubted because I run an almost 15! year old AudioSystem X-ion 12-800 on a DLS CAD15 wired to 2ohms in a 50 liter aeroported box. Only my box is 10liters smaller than the original AS enclosure which is 60liters. Displacement of the speaker is (only) 24liters... But still that's almost half the box 😭 Because I listen mostly to heavy kicks, techno and rave music I chose this setup with the port of 10cm(5inch) in diameter and being 25cm (10inches) long I managed to tune around 40 Hz. Just because down to say 35 Hz there's only depth and too much thunder going on @ 0dB to get 👌🏻 kicks. To increase box volume I switched a couple times, not getting audible output increase. When I got the phase just right I sounded ok but much 'flappier' when inverted.. now I know why🤫 Hail to the King baby! Greetings, from the Netherlands!

thanks i have a small pre fab box that's ever so slightly too small for my sub i will try to invert the sub and see if it makes a difference.

I got two 12” skar evl’s in a dual skar armor box in a short body trailblazer could i invert them and gain more movement possibly I don’t want to mess it up?

Ive seen an adjustable tube port that could solve this problem just mark the tube when testing or if the customer wants it to look clean you can make them a ruler or something… you could even build the box to be inverted and the have slide in aeroports of different diameters to adjust tune for regular mount.

It depends on the situation your in like if the box is a tad bit too small the sub will be “tricked” into thinking the box is bigger and if you’ll be running shit loads of power inverting helps in keeping the woofer cool too as far as I know I don’t think it “sounds” any different either mount

Nice lesson. Warmer air in the box lowers air density in the box making the box bigger to the sub.

It would do the opposite and make the tuning higher at the same time. There's so much air movement is a ported box, though, that I tend not to worry

i inverted mine they sounded much better the box that i got was bought with the subs, and its a ported box, i did this with my 12's and my 18's both got louder and hit harder.

Wouldn't the loss of cone area cause a slight sound level difference?

I run inverted for cooling only, I run 8 DC level 5 12's in a serial 6th order. So inverted for me puts the motor/coil in the "large" chamber and helps cooling.

@@GTILOUD a serial 6th order has the rear chamber port firing into the front chamber where as a parallel 6th order the front and rear chamber are separate.

I would say with one sub you'd be alright either way but if you've got multiple huge displacement subs sharing the same port and airspace you might run into problems if you switch it up from what it was designed for .

You only gain the displacement of the sub. The box size is very small difference unless you have a massive basket and magnet design.. even then it’s still not a huge difference unless you are working with a very limited space and box that will fit in that space..

I've had both, solo baric is gonna hit harder and lower, but CompRs are no slouch especially for the money. If you're not upgrading your car's electrical go with 2 12 CompRs, but if you upgrade your electrical then 2 12 L7s all day

Wire one of the subs backwards. As long as the cone of both subs are moving in the same direction your fine.

No if your subs are inverted you do not reverse polarity so no don't reverse negative and positive on your sub if inverting
