Invention Of The Barcode

Ғылым және технология

Barcodes, born from the vision of Bernard Silver and Joseph Woodland in 1948, have a rich history in automating product information retrieval during checkout. From early experiments with ultraviolet ink to the adoption of lines and circles, barcodes became an integral part of commerce, with the Universal Product Code (UPC) standardizing product identification in the 1970s.
Barcodes work by scanners projecting a light beam onto them. Black stripes absorb light, while white spaces reflect it. The scanner deciphers the reflected light to accurately identify the product. As technology continues to advance, the future of barcodes in a world of smart stores and innovative checkout systems is a topic worth exploring.
The retail industry is swiftly evolving with the rise of smart stores, where customers can effortlessly grab items and receive digital receipts. This prompts us to consider whether barcodes will eventually be replaced by newer technologies. While barcodes have served us well for decades, ongoing innovation may offer more efficient and seamless ways for consumers and businesses to interact with products and information.

I just purchased a barcode/receipt printer for use in an inventory control database; I have a wireless handheld scanner, works great.

2:06 Funny how the PCB module shown in 2:06 is supposed to be a 1949 circuit but is in fact a switchmode power supply flyback converter, invented much much later in history :)

so is the register a terminal that looks up a database on a main computer as it processes the bar codes? Or does each cash register know what product is from what bar code?
