So often when we first get into horses, we are guided to get more tack, more gadgets, more items to control our horses and to control the way they respond to our demands. If we are lucky, we will find ourselves with a horse who may not respond at all the way we are told they should, and who speaks out against the traditional horsemanship of past generations. If we are really fortunate, we take this as a sign to look at what we are doing rather than questioning that particular horse. We failed to capture the whisper, and thus we get the yell or even the scream. ROTH methods seek to remove the gadgets, to connect us with our horses through permission and trust-based leadership rather than simply being satisfied with compliance on a daily basis. When we seek to remove the controlling gadgets, when we begin to rely on our trust-based connection with our horses, they are happier, and we often feel a tremendous sense of freedom and accomplishment. Our horses never have to let us do anything to/with them, really. But when we cultivate a partnership in which they want to do with us, and even for us, we can realize the true value of the intention behind this work. It's not for everyone.
