Building on our Introduction to Mishna Class, we welcomed 2023 with a new course of study. "Introduction to Talmud" will present a basic framework for reading the Babylonian Talmud (mostly in translation but with reference to the Hebrew and Aramaic).
Today's session, the first in our five-week initial course of study, begins with a lecture on the history and development of the Talmud and a few pointers about the way in which it is to be read. For this introductory course, we will be looking at various passages that illuminate important themes and modes of Talmudic discourse and logic. Our first passage was from Bava Metzia 59b, the famous story of the argument over the so-called "Oven of Akhnai."
We will look forward to continuing our study online, Thursday mornings over Zoom, at 10:15 AM.
