Thank you for this useful introduction. 'Articulation', however, refers to the fact of consisting of sections, on the basis of the French meaning of 'articulations' (joints between the bones of the body parts), seen vertically, when a person is standing. So, the analogy is with the way a person is built.

Very interesting information, certainly helped with my Art History course. The only thing I would critique is that it was a bit distracting how often the speaker would say "um" or "uh".

Erm... It's a neutral sound, probably the most common 'stopgap' when speaking. The psychology of most people will ignore this (it had not struck me, as I was listening to the contents). This seems to be a lecture, so, the person speaking 'off the cuff' as it were.
