In this lecture we investigate the nature of propaganda. We examine what propaganda is, the difference between education and propaganda, the history of propaganda, the nature of political propaganda, and the role propaganda plays in modern democracies.

I don't think propaganda can ever be value neutral (2:24). The goal of propaganda is to move people toward a certain direction _regardless_ of how they might have chosen to act had they acted based on their individual will and with complete information. Negating the effect of people's free will cannot be value neutral unless free will itself is also value neutral, but the positive value of free will is something this channel has always emphasized. Therefore, propaganda must be bad by default regardless of its goal.

Why does Propaganda work? I once read a study in which 1. The political opinion of Test persons was measured. 2. Afterwards they were shown propaganda Material. 3.Directly following their opinion was measured again. The Material did not change their opinion on the subject as the Material was easily identifiable as propaganda. 4. A couple of weeks later the political opinion was measured once again and it was seen that their opinion had changed in Favor for the propaganda. The conclusion was that people do not forget the Information but the source of the Information.

Agree'd. I can't stand the argument that propaganda is neutral. Even if Propaganda was truly neutral, the very fact that it can be used for nefarious means without the public even knowing, should be enough to make the average person very weary. And I certainly don't subscribe to the idea that Propaganda makes the world easier to understand or comprehend, like Ellul claims. If anything, Propaganda can be used to create a fantasy world, with which can be used to manipulate people into supporting awful things, just see Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, China, or North Korea, if you don't believe me.

Their interests might be at odds with the reader or viewer. And all members of the audience might not necessarily have the same vested interests. What people ought to recognize, and accept, is that different people have different interests, and to not pretend otherwise. The responsibility is not on powerful people to make the world less scary, it is on those with little power to recognize just how scary the world actually is! And to preserve whatever power that they do have.

This should be mandatory to watch many time “If those in charge of our society - politicians, corporate executives, and owners of press and television can dominate our ideas, they will be secure in their power. They will not need soldiers👈 patrolling the streets. 👉We will control ourselves." Sounds like today. "Yet the word propaganda was first used 1622👈. In that year Pope Gregory the XV" I think its so important to understand this history. Its starts with Bernays and his use of suggestions. He was the one who convinced women to smoke by branding it as freedom and the one who had doctors selling cigarettes. By appealing to people's" guilt barrier" Also using dissonance. From: Simply Psychology In the most basic forms of the causes there are 3. Forced Compliance Behavior: Forced compliance occurs when an individual performs an action that is inconsistent with his or her beliefs. (First the mandate..) The behavior can’t be changed since it was already in the past, so dissonance will need to be reduced by re-evaluating their attitude toward what they have done. ( Then to resolve the dissonance from the guilt or old belief. They rationalize it with the most convenient excuse) Decision Making, increase the attractiveness of the chosen alternative and to decrease the attractiveness of the unchosen alternative. Many times by shame and embarrassment. ( Sell the brand and make the people unattractive or even sub human who are agianst it ) Effort. And.. "effort justification.” If we put effort into a task that we have chosen to carry out, and the task turns out badly, we experience dissonance. To reduce this dissonance, we are motivated to try to think that the task turned out well. (Like for say. Doing what you were mandated to and then getting injured. There must be some rationalization. Like you slowed the transmission for other people so your injury has a noble meaning) I dont think you have to try real hard to find examples of this today. Then there is dissonance resolution "Acquire new information that outweighs the dissonant beliefs. For example, thinking smoking causes lung cancer will cause dissonance if a person smokes. However, new information such as👉 “research has not proved definitely that smoking causes lung cancer” 👈may reduce the dissonance." That doubt or plausible deniability over time with enough repetition.. Is effective. You might even say its" safe and effective" for a resolution to a created dissonance. Or just a general distrust of the unknown. Bernays during WW1 was not the only propaganda. The Creel commission used more overt nationalism propaganda. Tapping into the " greater good" for guilt and shame or embarrassment. "The Creel Commission…succeeded, within six months,👈 in turning a pacifist population into a hysterical, war-mongering population which wanted to destroy everything German, tear the Germans limb from limb, go to war and save the world. (Noam Chomsky, Media Control)" Hitler was so impressed by these tactics that defeated him in WW1 he became obsessed. He combined these tactics. Finding you could use both to compliment each other. Basically the overt social conformity pressures help influence dissonance resolution in desired ways. In this most basic description " The greater good is most common" If you could symotaniously create that dissonance with repetition and persuasiion. Also with things like if you have a brand new product and there are health concerns . With repetition of " true facts" presented as " new research that finds it safe " can create doubts with repetition and time. When done correctly together with full control of the media they compliment both their "effectiveness" To control dissonance resolution through the group mind. Sounds just like 3 years ago to me. "Bernays knew of the Germans’ use of propaganda to convince young Germans that they were the super race, and he studied the Nazi use of messages and other methods. However, he changed the idea of “propaganda” to “Public Relations” to make his ideas and methods more acceptable in the United States. So Bernays learned from Hitler combining these methods in WW2 and rebranded it . Public Relations. His next book and also the filter and methods used for all information and persuasiion like what we just went through in covid. To coherse non consential medical experiments. Was " Public Relations " These are undeniable verified facts. Just all the sudden . With this new power Benays perfected from Hitler. It all went silent. Because of this history but also because a hidden hand needs to stay hidden. "The purpose of Nazi propaganda was not to brainwash ordinary Germans, and it was not intended to deceive the masses even though it did enable the movement to gain new recruits. "The principal objective, according to historian Neil Gregor, was 👉“to absorb the individual into a mass of like-minded people,👈 and the purpose of the ‘suggestion’ was not to deceive 👉 but to articulate that which the crowd already believed.” Essentially to stay hidden using group psychology to make them believe it was thier own idea. "The point is to make the masses demand of the government what the government has already decided to do. If it follows this procedure, the government can no longer be called authoritarian👈 , because the will of the people demands what is being done.” (Jacques Ellul, Propaganda: The Formation of Men’s Attitudes)" Its for the greater good to get back to a new normal. So its not the governments fault . The liability is shifted to the people who then essentially do it themselves. Feeling noble about it. When this goes down the road of obedience and conformity this is how atrocities happen. Which is exactly why we are hearing calls for the Nuremberg code.. The excact same tactics from the exact same Books were used to compliment each other. These tactics are a century old but effective. Yet always lead down the same totalitarian road. I hope if your reading this you give this video another view and see what sticks out to you. Research this yourself. Self education is the only way out of this. Yet you must be able to identify it first. To decide if you want the control to change your behavior. Most people are failing miserablely at identifying it. I hope this helps. Thank you and much ❤ and respect to academy of ideas. There is so much great content stuffed into one of your videos. You could learn something new through repetition of views. The good kind of repetition.

First off, this was a very useful video to help educate my poor adult friends ;-) Secondly, and since its been brought up, just because Howard Zinn may have published inaccuracies in his books, that statement alone is not credible to render the use of the particular quote in the video invalid nor invalidate him as an Author. That was a common fallacy used in propaganda called Red Herring, which skirts the topic away from whats being discussed in order to undermine the discussion or argument. Thank you for the great lesson Saligia B. And since Saligia brought it up, I'd like to point out that Howard Zinn described exactly why he wrote what he did, and gathered the historic material that he did in the introduction to his book as not to mislead anyone. He explicitly warned the reader he was attempting to tell the tale of the "looser", since the common history we learn in school is usually events as told by the "winner." I suggest it as a good read. It's called A People's History of the United States. Its patriotic in the sense that there have been some great battles between good and evil on the soil of the USA and abroad that we should be proud of- even when the heros are the losers.

Repetition is a propaganda tool and the media made sure we were hit over the head with corona virus. Many images the media uses invokes an emotional response. It almosts prevents people from mounting any rational objection. If Heath Ledger were around today he would say that : It's the schemers that brought you the corona virus. The schemers that control your little world. You see, all they have to do is take their media and have them say "Corona Virus! Corona Virus! Corona Virus!" and everyone loses their minds!

I disagree with the notion that propaganda provides a benefit to those who fall for it. While it might make the sheep comfortable and confident, the frog also may be comfortable for a while in the pot being brought to a boil that will inevitably be his downfall... you argue that it's good for us to be comfortable in our ignorance, when in reality, that comfort just makes us easier targets for the tyrants wielding propaganda who view us as totally expandable and with psychopathic contempt.
