This book introduces modern readers to Michael Faraday’s great nineteenth-century lectures on The Chemical History of a Candle. This companion to the KZread series contains supplemental material to help readers appreciate Faraday’s key insight that “there is no more open door by which you can enter into the study of science than by considering the physical phenomena of a candle.” Through a careful examination of a burning candle, Faraday’s lectures introduce readers to the concepts of mass, density, heat conduction, capillary action, and convection currents. They demonstrate the difference between chemical and physical processes, such as melting, vaporization, incandescence, and all types of combustion. And the lectures reveal the properties of hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide, including their relative masses and the makeup of the atmosphere. The lectures wrap up with a grand, and startling, analogy: by understanding the chemical behavior of a candle the reader can grasp the basics of respiration. To help readers understand Faraday’s key points this book has an “Essential Background” section that explains in modern terms how a candle works, introductory guides for each lecture written in contemporary language, and seven student activities with teaching guides.

I can't tell you enough how grateful, humbled, and just mind-blown I am that you put together such a detailed and thoughtful series of videos for all of the world to enjoy for free. What really got me was the free companion book! I mean, not only did you faithfully recreate, update, and annotate this entire lecture to the last detail, but you wrote it all out in a book and gave it all to us for nothing. What a wonderful gift this all is! You are a selfless youtube god-among-men, not only for willingly giving so much of your time and effort, but for being so incredibly thorough, painstaking and passionate about all of it...for us! It's like asking a friend to borrow his tent for a camping trip, and the friend brings over his truck full of all the camping gear he has that you might need, and firewood, and an updated trail map he made himself, and pages of well-written instructions on how to set it all up and use it. And he lets you borrow the truck and sends you away with a pat on the back and a box of Cliff bars! I feel like you're really doing this simply for the sake of education, out of a passionate desire to educate -- not for views, not for profit, not for accolades. ...And not to mention your million other insanely meticulous, carefully written, amazingly executed videos on such intricate and detailed stuff, for which I am also eternally grateful!! This all sounds like hyperbole, but it's really not. Your efforts do not go unappreciated. Thank you, Bill Hammack.

This series is absolutely amazing. I think its great how Faraday's lectures not only teach how a candle works, but also how scientists observe a phenomena, try to think about what causes it, and then find a way to prove their hypothesis. It's also instructive in the sense that it shows how scientists can better convey their knowledge to other audiences, which is often poorly done.

Just FYI: you would get better traction on video series like this if you released each video on a different day. People are much less likely to go back in their subs to finish a series like this, but if they just get one video per day then it is easy to consume.

I think you're referring to the mechanical computer, which released a week apart. There must be a happy medium. You've lost (net) 3,000 subscribers today, which sucks considering all the hard work. I think it's mostly a knee jerk reaction to blowing up subscription pages, not the content or quality. I'll leave it at that. I just finished the series and really enjoyed it. Thanks and keep it up with the great work.

I think the amount of work and dedication of these videos has been obscured by a simple channel decision of uploading all of them at the same time. It really dosen't matter if they are released in a day or a month, what matters is the content, the work and dedication, the passion and the time that is invested in this kind of work, I mean, they have a commentary video that will guide you trough the lectures if you are not versed into science (that's awesome) and to top it all, they are FREE, I don't get how people can complain about it. I want to note that this is a masterpiece the likes of which are rarely seen in youtube (not even big channels like Vsauce or Veritasium release this kind of content, although they come close). I love this series and genuinely appreciate the work you and your team did here, I also regret you have so little subscribers. All in all I'd say keep up the good work!!
