Introducing two groups of quail to each other. Mes Cailles se rencontrent. Codornices se encuentran

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

After a Summer chilling out, relaxing and eating organic food in the greenhouse, my purchased ex-caged quail are now ready to meet our home-raised organic quail 'chicks' and their mother hen Cappuccino.

It seemed that the hen also wanted to break up the fight. She is amazing. :D

She's a great bird and yes a good mother hen is ready to solve all the problems that chicks can throw at her. I'd recommend Cochins to anyone and a Cochin Frizzle makes a superb mother hen. All the very best, Sue

They are such cute little guys I would spend hours watching them. I wonder if I got eggs next summer and one of the bantams raises them in the coop if the other hens would accept them.

Hi there Danielle, I've found both my male and females make that noise, it is the 'I'm over here' type call that keeps them altogether. They even make it when they are quite small, it's faint but distinctive and very different from that very vocal noise the male makes when he is calling for the females and which starts them thinking about nesting and laying. There's an awful lot to be written about quail 'speak'! All the very best from Normandie, Sue

Oh my! Chicken AND quails together! Sue would you recommend this? I was planning on getting some bantam hens (small breed) but I don’t want the harmony of my quails ruined...

Hi there, sorry to be so late in replying, a whole raft of comments got lost somewhere but with this new KZread set up I can actually find them! I've actually mentioned the quail and chicken thing in an upcoming video and in particular in an article I've just published: holistic-hen.blogspot.com/2020/08/scaly-leg-tassel-foot-in-quail-scaly-face.html#.Xzfjpncv6V5 This is more from a germ theory v terrain theory stance though because that is what a lot of people ask. However, from the point of view of harmony it depends on the individuals and how they react because there are no rules! I once rehomed a Frizzle from a place where everything was mixed in together and free-ranging - chickens, guinea pigs, goats, geese, ducks and even peacocks and they all were getting on so well. I think you have to try it and see but certainly the small breeds like Serama are famous for bringing up quail and my bantam Cochins for example and my Sebright crosses just got on so well with quail. It's all about experiments, just be ready to intervene at the initial introduction or have your quail chicks raised by a broody first. Did you see this film it showed my experiment with introducing two groups of quail, one of who although basically adult were still with the mother hen: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZaB6xsumYMbagpc.html All the very best from Normandie, Sue

Do quail take a dustbath in nature, or is that just something they learned from the hen?

  • @Pavlovafowl

Hi there, good question, most birds that don't wash in water and even some of those that do, like sparrows, will take dust baths and quail are no exception. However, it is a communal activity and I'm guessing the mother hen, just as a mother quail would, starts them off for their first dust bath. All the very best from Normandie, Sue

This is great, thank you for posting. If you drop by (since it's 2015 now!) I am curious to know if the Quail communicated well between themselves? The older ones never learned to speak "hen" & the younger ones never really learned "quail" speak, so how did that play out? =)

Ad Astra Hi, Thanks for your comment. Yes they are all living together in harmony. The proof that they communicate well, is that the females needed the males very noisy (!) call to start them off building nests and laying, which they did. You can see the video here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gGmq2NRylrPdcdo.html My big project for this year is to build an annex to the greenhouse so the quail can be safe to sit their eggs, as if in the open. I am slowly getting everything written up on my blog and will include the section on getting the two groups together. Hopefully this year too we will have the patter of tiny claws from an actual quail sitting her own eggs. All the very best, Pavlovafowl aka Sue

    1. do you grow your own feed? 2. have you got any quail yet that hatched there own eggs. 3. i still think this is cool :) go quail! they seem so much happier then a lot of folks having them in cage settings. 4. what is the feed like do quail egg a lot of greens?

The organic grain I sprout for the quail is purchased from our local organic dairy farm, the rest of their food comprises, organic fruit, vegetables, foraged weeds and insects, some of this is home-grown. Quail do eat a great deal of vegetation, they particularly like young and tender new shoots, so they are great weeding but they need a good proportion of invertebrate protein in their diet. I've have had one quail actually make a nest and lay two eggs and the male guard the nest but she didn't go broody. There have been so many years of intensive quail raising in cages and as with battery hens, the broodiness was selectively bred out of them. Masses of domesticated quail were killed in the World Wars too, so the gene pool was quite small and it was easy to breed them just to be laying machines. My goal is to get my quail to lay quality eggs and raise their own chicks. Thanks for your questions and all the best, Pavlovafowl aka Sue

Hello, i have two female quails, they've been together for 6 months now and they are great best friends. But suddenly a week ago one of them became so aggressive towards the other quail. It started to pick at it and scream at it. Any thoughts on why did this happen and what can I do?

Hi there, so if there has not been some recent change in environment or an event which has been stressful in the life of these two quail, then in my experience aggressive or submissive quail behaviour is triggered by three main problems: deficiency, territorial issues, flock dynamics Deficiency in nutrients and in particular amino acids such as L-methionine can cause feather pecking and general aggression. The other deficiency which alters mood, is that of the B complex vitamins, in the main B12 cobalamin and folate B9, these two work in synergy and are crucial for mental and physical health. The two former nutrients are found in invertebrate protein (or boiled or scrambled egg would do) and the latter (B9) in green leafy vegetables. This does not mean that you are not feeding these, it may just be that one quail is preventing the other from getting her fair share. You need to observe what happens when they are feeding. Quail are omnivores, but in periods of growth, such as in early life, after a moult or when they have been in lay for a length of time, these nutrients are easily depleted. These are essential to maintain optimum physical and nervous system function and the percentage of them in the diet should be increased. My birds will shout at me if they do not get enough invertebrate protein in their diet! The second and third reason are linked, quail tend to get aggressive during the breeding season over territory. My 12 quail, mixed male and female live harmoniously over the Winter months but in March they start to get aggressive and territorial, usually over nesting and/or sleeping sites but it can be the whole area. In particular bonded pairs can get aggressive towards the rest of the flock. The problem for you could be your 'flock' dynamic; you have a single sex mini flock and in that case you may now be seeing the emergence of a super dominant female. In single sex chicken flocks this can mean the hens will crow, grow spurs and start to exhibit dominant behaviour around other birds of the same sex. This is because in the wild, flocks usually have a dominant male and female, sometimes even two, without this power balance, dominant behaviour can get out of control. In the main however, I would start with observing your two quail and make sure they are both getting an equal share of the protein content you feed them. Whether this is by foraging or by raising invertebrates (I do both). By the way I would not use supplements to achieve this, many are synthetic and it is so easy to do this through foods. Once you have made sure they are no longer deficient and if nothing has changed then you might think about introducing a male quail or maybe several new birds, which will change the flock dynamic. Hope this helps and do get back to me and let me know how things are going. All the very best, from Normandie, Sue

@@Pavlovafowl Hello again, I just want to add an info. Both the female quails are eating well. But I forgot to tell you that when that one female quail became aggressive, 5 minutes before that behavior began, the quail laid an egg without a shell. And after that she became aggressive and the aggressiveness is still ongoing till now. So i'm not sure if laying that egg is linked with her aggressive behavior. And I'm not sure if food is the reason, knowing that they both eat equally.

TheJamiesjamiesjamie Hi, sorry I only just found your comment. The quail started laying just the last days of April and have made actual nests but I need to get a male that is not related and I am making a special safe nesting area, so they can have the idea of being outside but still safe from predators. Their mother hen still goes in to visit them but she can get a bit feisty over sharing food!! All the very best, Sue

Hi Peter, I call it the 7 Euro greenhouse because it cost just a little more than our original own design and manufactured pallet-wood framed greenhouse, which we called; 'The 5 Euro Greenhouse'. If you want to make one there are detailed written instructions, photographs and a film on our blog: thegreenlever.blogspot.fr/2011/12/home-made-low-cost-greenhouse-designed.html#.WI5Sgmf1G1F If you would like more information do get back to us here or on the blog. You will also find other designs on the blog and films over on our other KZread channel Organikmechnic All the very best, Sue
