    Nothing like a trip to your garden while I am at home in North Hills CA. USA. (Surrounded by asphalt, buildings, etc.) Little Blanche gave me some good laughs. She is a hard worker! When I heard you say "slugs", my thought was of the nasty slimey ones I sometimes see out on sidewalks after the irrigation has watered the grass or plants. They must be the adult slugs. I honestly don't know of any bird that eats the adult slugs but perhaps they do, just not when we see it. Your birds are lovely. Blanche knew a good thing when the male was offering it and did a clean takeaway. Love it!! Happy Spring!

    I have just come upon your channel and your videos are a joy to behold. You have such knowledge, patience and rapport with your birds. I have four chickens and am about to start keeping coturnix quail. I can’t wait to get started with them. I have watched so many videos where quail are kept on wire with no stimulation. Your show how it really should be done. Thank you so much. Mags

    Thank you Mags for your lovely comments, they are really appreciated! Thanks too for watching my videos and if you would like more detailed information on quail, including the strategies I used to encourage them to pair bond and nest, then you might like to take a look at my site holistic-hen.blogspot.com/ I am so happy to hear from people who are interested in raising quail as naturally as possible. Quail are such beautiful, intelligent and friendly birds, please do write and film your experiences, they need good people like yourself as advocates. All the very best from Normandie and please let me know how you get on with your quail. My sister and mother live in Stirlingshire!

    Hi April, great to hear from you and thanks! So many people think chickens are a nuisance in the garden but they are actually an enormous asset, as you well know! The roses, lilac and mock orange are out and the garden smells like we fell into a vat of perfume every time I open the door, so keeping indoors editing is difficult - that's my excuse! Thanks for answering the question. We have a lot of baby slugs and I wasn’t sure if it was toxic for them. What a brilliant way to sift through the soil. I found potato worms in the soil after I began uprooting dead vines. I’ll bet the quail would have loved it! And I’m absolutely amazed that they don’t fly away. I think mine would.

    We recently adopted a single quail chick who wasn't doing well with he hen and flock of chickens she was with. So far she seems to be fitting in pretty well with the eight chicks we have, who are a week and half a week older than her. But sometimes they bully her and steal her food. And I've heard that I can't keep a quail in the fenced backyard because they will fly away. Do you think that a single quail chick who is integrating into a flock of chickens could be happy living with them? Could I let her roam in the backyard with them in the future? She had a big day today and ate her first worm and a bunch of insects! Love the videos!!!

    Hi there Elizabeth, that is a most interesting question because you present a unique case and as such the answer can only come from testing and following through on your hypothesis. In my experience, no hen, cockerel, rooster, quail and in my most recent experience, rabbit, is ever the same. Like us they are a product of their environment, nutrition, heritage and upbringing. As far as the flock dynamic is concerned, my guess is you need to up the food levels in general and in particular the invertebrate protein and/or supplement with a boiled egg. Lack of B complex vitamins including the all important B12 (from invertebrate and vertebrate sources) which works in synergy with B9 folate (from leafy veg) coupled with lack of essential amino acids (which are not found in a grain diet) have proved to have direct bearing on behavioural problems in poultry. So by becoming Sherlock Holmes, this is what I always do and your observation has already informed you that food is an issue within the group, so take that out of the equation. You may need to feed your quail chick separately (out of sight of the flock) to make sure her nutrient levels are stocked up and the bullying over food does not occur. Furthermore, your quail as opposed to your chicks is precocial, so she will have better developed foraging instincts and the chicks will take advantage of that - my own hens are following mother and father blackbirds around at the moment! I do hope you will record this experiment because it is so important to show others how they can work through to solutions. Quail have had and still are having a terrible deal from humans, you only need to look on KZread for that, anything that helps them to maintain their happiness and yet fit within a domesticated situation where they have the best protection from the ever present predators but equally as much freedom as possible has to be the ultimate goal. I have no totally cogent idea why my chickens don't leave and fly away because technically there are ways out of our forest garden and many of my bantams fly (and climb) really well, I believe they don't because they have created harmonious small flocks within the garden and they have enough food both within the forest and provided by us to be well, you said it: 'happy'. Really good luck and do keep in touch, it will be fascinating how this pans out but my idea is to observe constantly at each stage and as with my quail above and in particular because there is no mother figure in your flock to bond everyone to yourself as the dominant 'bird'. All the very best from sunny Normandie, Sue

    Hi there, so that is the turf/grass with roots and soil that I brought back from my gardening job. It is full of worms and other invertebrates, including slugs and our quail love these. Hope this answers your question and Best Wishes from Normandie, Sue

    Can quails become broody in such natural environment?

  • @Pavlovafowl

    @Pavlovafowl

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi Vladimir, yes, it is the natural environment coupled with a diet of invertebrates, which contain essential amino acids plus the B complex vitamins which have such a positive effect on the quails' central nervous system. They seem to then feel relaxed enough to revert to their natural behaviour. Poor nutrition from grain-based diets and the stress of enclosed confined spaces have the opposite effect, in my experience. I have had bonded pairs, nesting, sitting and chicks hatched in a natural environment. I have written articles here if you are interested: holistic-hen.blogspot.com/p/blog-page_27.html#.WxkOBBqYOkB All the very best from Normandie, Sue

    I handle them a lot and talk to them too! These are very tame though, particularly the white female, I always seem to have one that is more tame than the others and it is why I can have them out with me in the garden. Try to hand feed them and see if they will come to you, food works wonders to show you are a friend! All the very best and good luck, Sue

    Sue, I'm glad to see that you, Andy, and the fowls are doing well. I just recently started an internship in Blandy Experimental Farm in Virginia USA where I will be doing research into bee colonies. You are welcome to follow my photography of my adventures in instagram at bio_shots. I am one step closer to achieving my dream of a countryside home where I can care for animals. I hope to watch more videos from you soon. Take care, Leo.
