    That Violoncello isn't near big as it should be to properly resonate low notes, but it's low register sounds... Not full, but colorful, very raspy low notes are somehow charming.

    any idea what the wave length is for an E on a cello? i think you would be amazed at the size of a resonant space in the lower octave or two. yes the resonant space affects tone but it's more of a tonal color or "equalizer" than a proper resonant space just like an electric guitar still sounds like a guitar with no resonant space. ( theres a whole series of videos on where the tone comes from in an electric guitar)

  • @chucks9999

    @chucks9999

    Жыл бұрын

    @@danisyx5804 On a full size cello you'll probably want a 1/8 or 1/10 size bass string. Don't remember the specific E string I used (Obligatos?) but as far as tone goes it was still robust. The instrument was a cheap basswood cello (that's a tonewood warmer than spruce.) Didn't quite have the volume of larger basses but most instruments should be able to resonate nicely below C. Main issues with a Cello->Bass conversion is difficulty getting decent bass strings at such small lengths (a heavy gauge Cello C can act as the G.) and you're going to want machine tuners on the lowest string (something I didn't do.) The E can be very sensitive to pitch and wouldn't recommend steel strings because of it. There is also the fact of excess tension on the body with the heavier tuning. Added an additional sound post towards the bass side as a precaution but this doesn't solve the pressure on the neck unfortunately. GDAE (2 oct below violin) is probably the better choice for tonality and safety for anyone going lower than C. To wrap up; my experience transforming a cello into a bass was fairly positive and liked the sound more than the standard tuning for that instrument. The cello sounded closer to a bass but without the body it had a more "direct", wooded tone, bland. GDAE should let you to keep more of the instrument's tonal properties and doesn't extend the bass so far down to reduce the effects of its own sound coloring.

    Some baroque cellos can be set up with five strings (the extra one is a high E; even though it's not a smaller instrument it's called a "violoncello piccolo"). But you use a different bridge and tailpiece because those can be changed easily, but the headstock has five holes in it so most people keep the peg in there. Same with the Spalla.

  • @75Chopin
    @75Chopin8 жыл бұрын

    Nice effort, a bit far fetched to state that Bach actually wrote the cello suites for this instruments. I heard samoples of a complete recording of the suites by a much younger player/luthier. The 6th suite sounds great, which could possibly be written for this instrument but the other suites sound terrible! Aweful, like a bassoon. I doubt Bach wants to write music for a string instrument to sound like a Bassoon, or he would have written suites for Bassoon instead. I think it is an option to use da spalla to play these suites but hardly the ideal. Bach wrote the music with lots of deep bass notes, requiring the full resonance of a much larger instrument to give the pseudo-polyphonic effect of the suites and give a much richer sound that is required for this type of music. This is not the violin sonatas/partitas. I also heard the latter played by violoncello piccolo by Bylsma and it also does not that good, because it is intended for the violin, for high registers mainly. So he knew exactly what instruments he wanted the music to be played by.

    Quote (german): "Der Violinist und Komponist Franz Benda (1709-1786) schrieb: „Dies Instrument ist wie ein Violoncell gestimmt, hat aber in der Höhe eine Sayte mehr, ist etwas größer als eine Bratsche, und wird mit einem Bande so befestiget, daß man es vor der Brust und auf dem Arme halten kann. Der selige Kapellmeister Herr Bach in Leipzig hat es erfunden.“" Source: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viola_pomposa

    For those who do not read German, ""The violinist and composer Franz Benda (1709-1786) wrote:" This instrument is tuned like a cello, but has a say in the height, is slightly larger than a viola, and is fastened with a tie so that you can do it in front of the chest and holding in his arms The Blessed Kapellmeister Herr Bach in Leipzig invented it. @@Renshen1957 Not your fault, but Google Translate failed in a couple of places here: "hat aber in der Höhe eine Sayte mehr" = but it has one additional string at the higher end of the range. "daß man es vor der Brust und auf dem Arme halten kann" = [so] that one can hold it in front of one's chest and in one's arms.

    Disliked for putting an unremovable video recommendation right over the text at the end of the video.
