Introducing the NEW QUAD COIL Prototype Behemoth Bass (Dual Quad-coil humbucker pickups sound demo)
Today I'm showing off a bass I built for myself, featuring new quad coil pickups with nearly infinite tone combinations. For more info about these pickups or to make a purchase, check these links:

I’m sorry but the quad coil pickups that were demonstrated in this video were unknowingly infringing on a current patent owned by someone else. Bro, that bass is absolutely amazing. I stumbled on your channel when there were only like 6 or 7 videos, and it's so cool to see how far your skills and design ability have come. You're the reason I'm a luthier today, super appreciative man. Great job Dan, and as usual I'm looking forward to what's next.

Thanks for the encouragement jacob!
You are very innovative. You make your Basses so versatile. None of the high end manufacturers, at a great price, are doing nothing like this. Luthiers like you make Bass FUN!! Thanks!!
Dan, that bass is next level. I love seeing what you come up with, so creative while being practical and insanely useful. Great stuff, brother.
Fantastic!! You deserve that flagship bass!! I've watched you since your early DIY Strat builds, and you've worked really hard at your craft. Congratulations
Just awesome work Dan. Just, awesome.
Dan, those pickups sounded amazing on every position. Especially getting different eras on the same pickup. Including the "Coil Swap" you mentioned, I think you've wired the most versatile bass pickup I've ever seen. I might need to figure that out for my in progress build, Series-Split-Paralell humbucker, & a Coil Swap for the split.
The bridge reverse p setting is insane. My favorite one. The midrange is unreal. Lol now i want to build a dedicated bass with a reverse p in the bridge position.
Awesome sounds. You've done something I've thought of which is the double J style that straddles the 60's and 70's bridge position. I mentioned earlier you need a low-pass filter pre-amp. You'll definitely get the Alembic/Wal sound with these that way. I probably will be ordering a pair. Really awesome job!
AWESOME WORK DAN!!!! That bass is a BEAUTY and the electronics are SWEET!!! Keep up the GREAT work!!! 😃👍
Nice work, amazing amount of versatility
I can only imagine just how complicated the wiring circuit is inside of this. I cant begin to process its done. This whole thing would be amazing for someone who wants one bass to do it all.
Your videos are so informative, I'm actually learning a lot.
You really inspired me to start building instruments and fixing them by your videos. This is so cool bass! and I really liked sound of humbucker at bridge and P pickup at the neck ;)
such a great bass, thanks for sharing! I love the ability to do both P styles especially, but definitely the two J styles as well. A P in the bridge is great!
Like the sound! Versatile, some all purpose sounds that are none-the-less unique, then also some specialty sounds as well.
Excellent job Dan, excellent job!!!
Excellent! Frankly, I love the tone and overall sound of the bridge P/neck J; phat but doesn't get in the way because it's tight and bites while keeping clear and proper bottom end and mid tones are just right to my ears.
I can hear a difference when the poles are switched . These pic ups are amazing.
Wow, nice work Dan!
ive always wanted pickups EXACTLY like this. honestly id love to get one of these basses very similar but a 5 string or at least a four string with a drop tuner. awesome bass
Great variety of great tone!!
I need this in a 6 string version with three of those pickups and a 3x3 headstock. Absolute dream bass.
Sick man this is epic You got skills man thank you for inspiring me to work on my basses
Love the pickup options!!!
I'm glad you made yourself one. I would love to see the wiring diagram.
that's really neat, what a versatile bass!
Hey Dan! Those pickups sound great and they are actually a legit innovation in the guitar world, which doesn’t happen very often. Fairly priced in my opinion, so don’t feel bad. Great work!
This is a level of pickup versatility I just don't see as a guitar player. The Fishman Fluence pickups are the closest things i can think of in the guitar realm, but they require power and don't do as many tones. I'm really surprised more companies aren't doing stuff like this for guitar

The Seymour Duncan P-Rails are really nice for guitar. With the Tripleshot rings you can get P90, single coil, series humbucker, and parallel humbucker (sounds similar to 2 & 4 on a strat)

Guitar players get into amps and pedals whereas bass players get into dialing in the tone that they get out of their bass. It's the natural order of things, don't meddle with it. 😊

@@maninalift that's a very reductive way to look at it, especially when Dan has shown off tons of his wiring mods on guitar as well. Besides, when has humanity ever left things to their "natural order" lol
Love the build!
You’ve officially changed the bass guitar game. Please release these for sale & watch them sell out in a heartbeat. Pls pls pls ❤❤❤❤
That is a take one bass to a gig and have multiple bass sounds at your fingertips! Absolutely love it!!!
Amazing bass build
One day I’ll be able to buy one!
Nice build love it!
The warwick vibes here are astounding. Love the combos here.
Sweet! Want one!!!
Nice looking and sounding bass you can just about get any sound combination out of it you want. Good to Go.
very nice sound 10:33 I also like this single coil in the neck and split coil in the bridge.
My friend and I are just finishing up our own attempt at a "swiss army knife" guitar. I was already thinking about doing a bass version. These pickups would be perfectly in keeping with the "spirit" of the guitar we built: "more sounds than anyone would ever use". But, hey, who's really to say, right? I think I'm going to have to count my pennies and get me a set of these. Well done, brother!
This is legit amazing. I think the difficulty in picking up the P vs Reverse P sound is because the strings are new and sound particularly bright. I suspect it might sound more obvious with older strings or with flatwounds.
@GunsandGuitars
Жыл бұрын
That is definitely possible. I’ll have to play it more to find out!
Nice pickups and wiring!!!
P-neck /humbucker bridge might be my favorite tone you did specifically on the higher notes
The most reverse P tone that was most noticable was the double reverse P that I could hear through my blue tooth head phones, will check out with better at home. You essentially just made one bass to rule them all and that is absolutely awesome, the Fender FBI will be knocking at your door any minute 😂😂🤘🤘🤙🤙
Yep...another hit and outta the park!
That looks sick bruv!
very smart!!! hope you'll have your own fretboard inlays
Wow amazing bass and pups, so cool😜😎🇬🇧
Very cool concept. I like jazz basses but hate the noise. This is neat.
Man. That’s awesome.
Awesome. These are very similar to the SIMS bass pickups with all the amazing options. However I think these look way better. Idk if you’ve checked out the SIMS bass pickups from the UK. Great man!
That pickups are insane
Fabulous flexibility even if you never use it all. Really noticeable the move of the bridge from n to s pick up
very impressive versatility
Beautiful!
Really cool!
Wonderful bass and idea! I would like to hear comparison beetween neck humbucking mode 5:05, north/south coil mode 5:12 / 5:15 and P style split coil mode 5:20 Pity it was not included within sound demos at the end of the video.
Great sounding and looking bass, those are some crazy cool coils. And I've got a project to work on as soon as I finish the current project... Hmmm... And using Siberian elm is great, since it's a horrible invasive tree species, so getting rid of them is a good thing.

That versatility is amazing... Great Job DAN! your innovation is amazing and inspiring. I'm curious what the duty for something like this might cost my up north here (on top of converting my monopoly money.) Cheers Big Wheel

Hey Dan. Totally inspired!! How many winds are you using? in each coil?
Dan, great content as always! I am super interested in this set to put into a build. Would you be willing or able to put up a wiring diagram or even offer prebuilt harnesses for the setup that you have for all of the coil switching options? Always look forward to your content, keep up the amazing work.

@@GunsandGuitars That would be awesome, Dan. I’ll be getting a set of these ordered.
Hey , Great Pickups . In the Bridge Position im hearing a slight difference with the reverse pickups . But why you won’t using a 6-way switch for every pickup? Or 4 buttons with leds for each pickup? You can also make them serial and parallel and changing the direction. But a very nice build !!!!
This bass - and those pickups in particular - sound great. I hate that you couldn't move forward with them. Would you be willing to share who's got the patent on them?
Amazing! are those pickups and preamp available?
Great video. I thought your J in the neck P in the bridge setup was really forward thinking. Bassist Ethan Farmer had BassMods build him a bass with that configuration and it's a tonal beast as you well know. You thinking of selling the pickups along with the custom switching as a combo? Keep up the good works💯
@GunsandGuitars
Жыл бұрын
I’ll probably include a diagram, but a prewired harness would be too labor intensive I think
This seems like a really great bass. Honestly, I couldn't hear the difference between the P and reverse P modes. The best sound IMO was combining a P pickup with a humbucker (it seemed to work well both ways round). The only sound type I could think of that wasn't on this bass is out of phase, and honestly I doubt it would be very useful.
This is beautiful. If you are interested in a new challenge, i recently saw a Scott's Bass Lessons video showing off the kubicki Factor, with its very cool extended-scale d-tuner mechanism. Is that something you'd try. I'm not sure what aspects of it might be covered by patent
Great stuff, Dan, but maybe too many settings for a realistic playing scenario. I had a fat Strat project guitar that had 2 stacked HBs and a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge, with 3 SPDT switches that gave abt 27 different combinations! After a few years, I pulled it back to just a coil split on the JB and an on/off switch for each pup instead of a 5 way switch, which gave abt 9 combinations on a single guitar. On the upside, the 4 coil idea is super! I could see 1 pup doing it all on a bass in a practical application. Would love to see that bass in person!

Crazy F* awesome man salut
Here's a suggestion, Dan, what if you took a quad and did a neck position abt 1/4 inch off the neck? That would be some wall crumbling bass tone! I have a 1977 Tele bass with a Fender HB in that location and it's a low tone beast, that I added a set of Jazz pups to fore more high end.
Gubs n Guitars, nice.
The same idea as the multi pickups that Sims have been selling for a while then its a cool idea though
That's pretty cool. I've been using 8 coils but only full in parallel and series. Are you adding switches that place the humbuckers or single/splits in series/parallel in the future? Are going to add your special Tone circuit in them in the future to see how it holds up as well?
@GunsandGuitars
Жыл бұрын
Honestly, probably not. It already has so many good usable tone options, so I don’t see the need to add more “less useful” options. It just over complicates it.
Dan my brutha, as always superb video man! But nope, not gonna order a bass just yet... Cause YOU are gonna build me a 12 stringer! That's right Dan, a 12 string bass! I'm holding out for that one my brutha. It will probably be a couple of years? But what the hey, some things just SO worth waiting for aren't they? Stay safe, you & the fam... ✌
this Dude rocks\m/!
these were used A TON on the Roadstar Ibanez basses back in the day, too bad those basses stopped being made cause they not only looked cooler, but also had more versatility than ANY bass back then
Incredible pickup option I need a 5 string version in a bad way

@@GunsandGuitars that’s a bummer hopefully you can get it worked out you have so much business to bring them they would be foolish not to work with Dan tha man!!
Dan when will you be selling the wiring diagram?
Huge! So many options... Useful? For fooling around for sure. But I feel like, I'd find my favourite setting and never change it... :D Btw shouldn't there be a size difference in the bridge and neck pickup? How are the pole pieces aligned? Just asking because there is no option like this in the webshop.
@GunsandGuitars
Жыл бұрын
Both neck and bridge are wound exactly the same. It’s my understanding that because there are so many coils and pole pieces in close proximity that the magnetic field is very large so it doesn’t matter as much if the pole pieces are perfectly aligned or not. And the tone speaks for itself 🤷♂️
With the custom quad coils being removed from the store, are there any quad coils out there that can handle the same options shown in this video?
In my headphones, I'm hearing that reverse P setting being slightly rounder, deepening the bass response just a touch more than conventional P. I'm not sure that through my speakers that I'd hear that otherwise.
Very Nice what is the price?
Amazing bass! You had kind of a nasty string buzz on that D string in the middle of the neck. Is that due to the fanned frets?

Alright, those pickups are seriously impressive in their versatility. I got to ask tho, while selling the pickups, Will you also be selling the wiring schematics for it as well? Perhaps in a bundle? (set of Double J's + wiring schematic, perhaps with the option to include parts or not)
