Oh, the memories hearing that sweet inline six multi-fuel purr. One of the first military vehicles I ever learned to drive in. They are timeless, bullet-proof and always put a smile on your face. The wipers are Pneumatic, the feed tube is to the far left exiting through the top of the dash. They are in series with an air tube/hose running to each. to operate there is a "Cap" valve either on the unit, or down on the dash nearest the driver's side. As you turn/screw the cap/knob in/out the air exhaust path is closed/opened and the piston inside each wiper unit pressurizes. This in turn makes the wiper arms swing.

Super truck, great sound from that exhaust,..I love that! Did you know that the name Reo, comes from Ransom E. Olds the man who 'invented' the Oldsmobile car and as well lent his initials / name to his line of trucks too, like this one. Another great automotive pioneer.

@Fitter Mat, Great bits of kit the Steyr Pinzgauer. There was a crash ambulance version that the RAF used. Which I drove for a fair few years on and off. Awesome bits of kit. Good fording capability up to the base of the windscreen. Tanks-a-lot have got about 6-8 RAF Pinzgauers. As I said, good for about 50mph but drinks diesel like water Thanks Jonathan

Congrats on the Deuce she looks and sounds just like it should! As far as your wipers in-op condition you will have to look at the condition of the vacuum lines and the wiper air motors examine them closely looking for bad seals and diaphragms, after you find that its all somewhat rotted out pull all the lines and the air motors and replace them with electric, even when they are new and working perfectly they suck! Another great solution and I do this to my Military trucks when ever I take them on the road and it might rain is any water repellent that you can put on your windshield you can even use car polish on your windshield and then you will have NO NEED for wipers at all. When you truck was upgraded to a Multi-fuel does it have the 427 CI or the LTD465? Both decent engines but folklore states the 465 is a better engine. All the Deuces I have owned thats been the engine in all of them and I have never had a problem. I keep my RPMs in the 2200 range, that gives me 53 mph with stock tires and it seems easier on the engine. Good looking truck take good care of it!

5th gear is up and away so that the shifter is not left in between a passengers knees for long movements. The wipers are air actuated from a belt driven pump on the driver front of the engine. The valve for the wipers is lower left of steering column, in front of left knee, unscrew to allow flow of air.

REOs were built about 3 hours away in Lansing Michigan. They (REO) Went bankrupt in 1975. The M35 was also built by Kaiser Industries (later AMC/Jeep) (AM General military div) and some built by Studebaker. I'm wondering if the windscreen wipers are vacuum run off the engine vacuum pump (Being Diesel/multifuel) or air operated via the air brake pressure storage tank? If air or vacuum you'll just have to trace back the pipes and see where they go, I do remember on a few ex military trucks they had an isolation valve fitted for when you either removed the windscreen or had a broken hose, much like the isolation valves found on the trailer air brake connectors.

Pinzguaer designed by Steyr-Puch, later built and redeveloped by BAE. The version you have got there is the Vector, an armoured version upgraded for Afghan/Iraq with added armour and aircon, they forgot to upgrade the engine or the brakes and the armour also gets in the way of the radiator meaning they tend to overheat if the engine doesn't give up from over exertion first. Not very popular, especially compared to the unarmoured Pinz. Friend of mine threw one off an Afghan cliff when it died!

I have a Deuce, the wipers are operated with air and the release valve to make them work is on the left hand side of the dash board at the bottom normally a plastic wind out knob ( size of coke bottle lid) just turn it anti-clock wise until required amount of air presure comes through to make the wipers work. Why are you double de-clutching? It should have a spicer gearbox which is a syncro box except for first gear coming down the box. Have fun with her, the my partner and I try to ours as much as possible and yes she makes take truck for the Tesco run.

I believe those wipers on the duce and a half are vacuum powered. The lever to the left of the manual handle is the input valve to make them work. If they have vacuum and the internals are still working, you should be able to somewhat adjust the speed with that knob while the engine is running, at least at above an idle. The travel speed won't be constant, and will also vary with engine speed since the vacuum source will vary.

Had deuce and a halves at BATUS in 70’s, not as advanced as this. Wiring harness was in flexible armoured conduit which made repair a b-----d! Stolly diffs need off roading every 20 miles to unwind transmission. This was why convoys of them would make breaks off the autobahn. Additionally, stollys could only test their water turbine power units in the water or the ceramic bearings would seize.

Not a good idea to blip the throttle when you change up a gear, that’s what the synchromesh does, matches engine revs to gearbox speed. Interesting to see how many people still know how to drive a “crash” gearbox(no-synchromesh). A good driver could change gear without using the clutch by judiciously matching engine revs to the gearbox speed. Clutch was only needed when you took off or when stopping.

Drove them in Yakima, Washington state in the 80`s as part of 2 Para Exercise based at Ft Lewis with their Rangers. Sounded good BUT, our MK Bedfords were far better off road.

I'm a civilian but drove both off road and MK was really soft compared to the REO. It lacked power and the gearbox was bloody awful in comparison.

How does the dual fuel work? Is there any work needed to swap fuels? The Leyland multi fuel engine in the chieftain tank took 6 hours of work to swap fuel .

The way I understand it is they have a fuel viscosity valve on the injection pump which adjusts the injection timing depending on how thick the fuel is. So thinner petrol would be injected closer to TDC.

Thanks for the knowledge. Must also have some sort of spark ignition for petrol.

@@rorymorris6875 no compression ignition works on petrol too just need to change the timing at petrol burns quicker

The engine was designed to take diesel and kerosene. It ran best on diesel. Petrol should only be used if you were desperate as it didn't lubricate the injector pump and it didn't last too long on Petrol. Drivers were told to add engine oil into the petrol to help with pump lubrication. The early engines were not turbocharged and smoked like hell on diesel. The later engines were turbocharged which added no real power but drastically reduced exhaust smoke.
