Introducing MTA Construction & Development

MTA Construction & Development is the organization charged with expanding the MTA’s transportation network and infrastructure. MTA C&D combines the planning, engineering, and construction departments from across the MTA to create a unified team that will expand the transportation network better, faster, and at lower cost.

    Lewis Richards Why do that when you could, for now, did a short tunnel connecting the 8th Avenue to the Nassau Street Line, replace current service over the Williamsburg Bridge with new services over the 8th Avenue Line (E and new K train). Since the extra 6th Avenue train capacity isn’t going via the bridge anymore, that extra capacity can now be used for local/express F train service (F express to CI and V local to Church). With several other new connections, one between the Broadway Line and the Fulton Line and the other from the Fulton Line to the the Jamaica Line (demolishing the section between Broadway Junction and Cypress Hills), more service changes would be made to better the ride for everyone.

    Fernando Salas I still can't understand that one myself that wasn't a smart move at that time! I'll add another in the Bronx why the hell They removed the THIRD AVENUE LINE? What a sad sight! That was my child hood growing up in the Bronx. Lost ridership they said... Bullshit. Throughout the 1970s the entire Bronx and some of majority The MTA transit system had a lot of lost ridership! The Grand Concourse Line and Jerome Avenue lines empty. The NINTH AVENUE TOO! Treated very badly Never got to see even the remainder of it except the now abandonment of trackage & structure near Yankee Stadium. SECOND AVENUE LINE? Why couldn't they put the Manhattan portion of the third Avenue line underground and expand it to Brooklyn Third Avenue ? Yes there was one there too! As for second Avenue rest of it to lower Manhattan what a snooze....

  • @TheRailLeaguer

    @TheRailLeaguer

    4 жыл бұрын

    harold alexis Second Avenue serves more of the East Side than third Avenue. Plus in this day and age of everything being under the MTA, Third Avenue would be too close to Lexington Avenue to be useful. Plus for the Bronx, all the elevated lines should be replaced. None of the elevated were built with any future demand in mind (3 tracks for an express service? FOH). The first place to start should be IRT Broadway-7th Avenue Line. I recommend the last 2-3 miles of the elevated line north of the Harlem River be replaced by an extension of the underground IND Eighth Avenue Line A train, with the line going from 207th Street to about 240th Street, with provisions for expansions north. The current 1 local train is a slow local, and from 242nd Street to the Times Square/Port Authority area, it stops 24 times. With the new express A train option, using 240th Street as a benchmark, it would only stop 13 times, saving about 20-25 or even 30 minutes in travel times for Riverdale riders. The 1 trains would then terminate at 215th Street. For yard access, the 240th Street Yard would be modified to connect with the A train while the 1 train would use 207th Street Yard. Another area for replacement would be the IRT Jerome Avenue Line, plus it’s connection to the White Plains Road. I’d recommend replacing it with a new 4-track subway along University Avenue, with the local tracks hosting the 4 train, and the express tracks used by a rerouted and extended 3 train.

    SmurfsFTW Dora&friendsFTL Ideally this Line should be completely rethought, with SAS 3 and 4 having 4 tracks from 63rd Street to a point south of Grand Street, in which 2 tracks would connect to the Manhattan Bridge and the other will continue to Chatham Sq, South Street Seaport, and Hanover Sq, which has heavy employment density. As for the 6th Avenue express, those tracks were once built for an expansion into Williamsburg, but this service can be reimagined for cheaper. How? It’s actually a combination of three projects. The Chrystie tracks can be realigned so that the express tracks can connect to the Essex Street station then go over the Williamsburg Bridge. There, the B can go to Metropolitan Avenue and the D to Broadway Junction. Two additional links will be built. Using the extant provisions at Whitehall, a new East River Tunnel would be built connecting to the Fulton local tracks. Another connection would be built to replace the middle section of the Jamaica Avenue Elevated (this section runs over Fulton Street). From here, R and W service would be rerouted to the new line, with the R going to Euclid Avenue and the W taking over the J train to Jamaica Center. These three projects will also requiring extending platforms on the elevated, plus rebuilding the Myrtle Junction for longer trains. From here, the R and W would replace N service to Astoria, and the N can go to 96th Street. A K route would replace the R on QB, the M on 53rd, and the C on 8th Avenue Local. M trains can be converted back to V trains running from 71st Avenue to Church Avenue via Culver Local (F trains become culver express). The C and D routes would swap so that the C goes express from Canal to 145th and then to the Concourse subway while the D goes local from 59th Street to 168th Street. All of this would allow for a better ride.

  • @maxbataille778

  • @TheRailLeaguer

    4 жыл бұрын

    SmurfsFTW Dora&friendsFTL What I’m proposing is that in the long term, the R would replace the N in Astoria while the N is rerouted to the Second Avenue Subway with the Q, never switching between local and express tracks. To replace R service on Queens Blvd, a new K route would be created, operating between 71st Avenue and World Trade Center vía QB Local and 8th Avenue Local. The M would move to 63rd Street and the C would be 8th Avenue express to 205th Street, Bronx, while the D would be via 8th Avenue local to 168th Street. In short, I am proposing removing Broadway Line service from Queens Blvd. it’s a low ridership service and causes delays on the entire Broadway Line.

Maybe a 9 Train to also get to New Jersey, then make a fee new letter trains for the Metro North, the original trains can have some additional stops im guessing from the railroads and then there will be new parts to enter? Idk I think I’d rather have it like that cuz Railroads are mad expensive just for 1 damn ticket, I’m fine with the normal ticket fair, $2.75 but yet the railroads out here being $5.50 or $7.75 hell someone even get more expensive depending on how far you want to go, but again that’s just my idea.

Then: (2) (3) to Flatbush Avenue (4) is extended to New Lots Avenue (5) is rerouted via local tracks east of Franklin Avenue, stopping at Nostrand Avenue, Kingston Avenue, and Utica Avenue, before continuing down Utica Avenue to Kings Plaza. For more details, check out this map: www.vanshnookenraggen.com/_index/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/NYC_Utica_track.pdf That option would allow for better service to Nostrand Avenue (even though it is parallel by the B44 bus), while eliminating the delay-inducing interlining at Rogers Junction. Another less-popular plan is to install new switches at the Portal Street portal and from here, the 3 train goes to the Utica Avenue Line, and the (4) and (5) are rerouted to the New Lots Line. The New Lots Line is not duplicated by any overlapping bus route. Meanwhile, (2) service to Flatbush Avenue is increased to replace (5) train service, with some shifting to the B44 SBS if possible.

    kcipopnevets The map I linked has some sort of a skip-stop service between Franklin and Flatbush to compensate for the loss of an express service. I am not proposing it at this this time since increased 2 and 3 service making all stops would already provide quicker service. However, the impact of both options is very minimal. In fact, you would save 5 minutes on your typical trip since trains do not have to be delayed at the junction waiting for other trains to cross. It is not worth spending $1 billion dollars to rebuild the junction to accommodate a service pattern that benefits practically no one. There is no need for the 5 train to serve Flatbush when all that does is cause routine delays in Brooklyn.

Also the seating arrangement on those cars are a nightmare anyways. Im excited to see this new train car theyre talking about releasing this year, open gangways to allow more space. Expand the stairwells and escalator widths in stations, it contributes massively to congestion. Get screens in every station, multiple screens! I shouldnt have to walk all the way to another end of a platform to see when my train is arriving. Figure out how to make the trains faster, for gods sake the M moves at the pace of a turtle! There are newer R211s on the way soon. 535 cars are being paid out of the 2015-19 capital plan and will be here soon. 75 are for the Staten Island Railway to replace the aging R44 fleet, which is causing headaches for riders in Staten Island. The rest of the cars will be primarily for replacement of the 354 R46 cars currently assigned to the A and C lines. There’s option orders for 640 and 437 cars that are being paid for out of the 2020-24 capital plan but this might be in jeopardy due to Covid-19 financial issues. In addition, there will be new R262 cars also paid for out of the 2020-24 capital plan to help with CBTC on Lexington Avenue and replace equipment on the newly-renovated 42nd Street Shuttle, which will now operate 6-car trains. That order might be delayed as well, so in the interim, the 42nd Street Shuttle will continue to operate with R62As.

    Blake McNamara How would it be a disaster? Yes there’s a small extra transfer here and there, but there would be increased service as a whole. For example, take a the Broadway Line. You currently have the N, Q, R, and W operating as follows: (N): Astoria-Ditmars to Coney Island: 9 trains per hour. (Q): 96th Street to Coney Island: 10 trains per hour. (R): Forest Hills-71st Avenue to Bay Ridge-95th Street. 8 trains per hour. (W): Astoria-Ditmars to Whitehall Street. 8 trains per hour. With this pattern, the N, R, and W all needlessly have to share tracks between Manhattan and Queens, kneecapping the entire Broadway and Astoria Line when it comes to train service expansions. To remedy this, the N shall be rerouted to 96th Street from Astoria-Ditmars. You can now operate service as follows: (N)/(Q) 96th Street to Coney Island. Both services will operate at 12 trains per hour, giving a combined 24 trains per hour. (R): Forest Hills-71st Avenue to Bay Ridge-95th Street. 12 trains per hour (W): Astoria-Ditmars Blvd to Whitehall Street. 12 trains per hour (service now operates at all times). There will be no disaster. Rather, it is a miracle. The CBTC they want to install on the Broadway Line will also allow for even spacing on the entire line, maintaining the even 24 tph on both tracks.
