Introducing Metal Web Joists

Metal web joists allow easier installation of services such as plumbing, cabling, heating pipes etc. resulting in the reduction or elimination of surface pipework. The depth, length and specification can all be adjusted to produce joists with specific performance criteria that can span greater distances than solid timber joists.

I used this style of joist 18 years ago when I built a master bathroom/bedroom addition. Span was 16'. In the bathroom I used conventional 2x12. In the bedroom I used the metal web joists. I get a lot of bounce in the bedroom side. Bathroom side is rock solid.

I've heard that. Open web trusses are bouncy. Closed web trusses are not. Thanks for the info that they try to hide from us.

I could not find this specific design of web joists in United States. It seems is only available in UK and Australia. In US I could find only full wood wed joists or if they have metal they are connected with a bolt or a pin. This design shown in the video seems more efficient.

I have a 16 year old house that has these joists and the floor is like a trampoline. I would like to know how to stiffen it up. As it is cracking the grouting in the floors tiles as well.

Good job. It will be great if you can prepare video showing how to connect these Joists to steel beam. Greetings, Marcin

Hi Metal Web Beams can only be manufactured in a factory using an industrial press. Full availability and installation details available from suppliers, for UK list visit www.tra.org.uk and use the find a members page. For steel the possibilities could be, top chord of Metal Web to sit on the top of steel beam (Top Hung method) or check with joist hanger suppliers such as ITW Cullen or Simpson Strong Tie for specific products or advice.

Can you get these in same size as a 2×10, which we know is 9-1/2 inches? And if so what do you recommend for a rim joist?

The rounding at the intersections would seem to be a good idea to resist buckling. Still, there are valid concerns brought up in some of the other comments.

What about the wiring,What are you meant to clip to along the joist to be within the 50mm threshold from floor or ceiling? Would be a dogs dinner with cable ties and expensive with girder clips but I’m guessing that’s the only option? Anyone know?

I installed these steels trusses years ago they are lite and easy to work with the down fall the whole subdivision was turned into lo income housing because theses trusses have a complete failure at a low temp if there is a fire .We had to quit using them because of insurance reasons they are not a new thing

They could be on 600mm or 400mm centres to suit the plasterboard which is 1200mm wide and fixed to the underside of the joists and tongue and groove particleboard flooring, which is 600mm x 1200mm and fixed on top of the joists. Metal web joists aren't an off the shelf product but a TRA member can work with you to provide an overall floor design which takes into account the critical variables such as floor loading, depth of joists, spacing of joists, how joists are to be connected to the walls (hangers/ top hung) and whether the floor needs to perform acoustic or fire resistance roles. Contact a member and find out more information on metal web joists at www.tra.org.uk You can also ask any other technical enquires via the website.

When someone is giving away homes built with these and you're not taking them - Let me have yours. It'll make a nice rental unit that lasts the rest of my life with no incident - like most houses - and provide me a nice side income.

@@oggyreidmore that's because you're an uninformed piece of shit. The average house framed with conventional lumber takes an average of 30 minutes on fire before the house starts collapsing. With tgis you have 3 minutes on average. So go fuck yourself you piece of shit.

@MattNis1 you'll still be demolishing the structure and rebuilding because they will be ruined by water damaging the web of the joist.
