Lizzie's character development is also very interesting. Kudos to the writers for not writing her as just a side-character, let alone make her Tommy's wife.

I understand that for dramatic purposes it is spot on but Diana Mitford was a really posh woman who had an etiquette and character much alike that of the female British aristocracy of her age, and Oswald Mosley excluded her of almost all of his political affairs before they were married after his wife passed. They show some form of complicity in public between the two who never happened before their marriage and show her as someone who isn't very friendly when she was a really conciliatory woman. Later on in her life she even did several interviews on personalities that she and her husband met before the war, such as Adolf Hitler, and those interviews were really light and easy to watch, she spoke in a very distinguished and calm manner that is not represented in the show.

Unity was far more so. Diana fell in love with the man DESPITE the cause, and stayed stubbornly devoted to him regardless of what that brought. Yes, she spoke in favour of his beliefs - but honestly, even given her post-war incarceration, she actually doesn't seem to have been a bad woman, rather than a misguidedly loyal one 😕

@@julianaylor4351 I shall, thank you! I DO wish YT would stop scrubbing almost all comments containing links to anything other than itself, or I could link you the fascinating Guardian article which was published a week after she died. I simply cannot find a trace of it here today - most odd. However, even the man who wrote that (rightly) scathing analysis of her largely accused her writing about her life and history as more "stupid" than anything. Her social charm was an indivisible part of the problem. She was stubborn, and unrepentant because she confused that with disloyalty and dishonesty. I do know a fair bit about her. I am fascinated by the lives of all the Mitford sisters. But I will look for that anecdote, as I don't think it's one I've heard 🙂 edit: I found it! It's called "Offensive charm", by David Aaronovitch. Not long. Worth a read. edit 2: I also found your anecdote - I HAD heard it before, but it it does indicate how out of touch she was, doesn't it?

She was, however, essentially stubborn and unrepentant throughout her life, and remained utterly loyal to him. A few tweaks in script and performance could make even this little scene somewhat close to what she was like. This ain't it 😕

1:08 Didn't Winston Churchill once refer to Diana Mitford as 'Dian-omite'? Still gets me thinking 'ew'. I heard she hoped to use her social connections and charm (not that I can see any here) to both British politicians and German politicians (Nazis and Fascists mostly) to get them to form a political alliance.

She adored Paris, and lived there with Moseley in a miniature chateau after the war. She was fluent in French (and German) to the point were her favourite reads where 18th century French playwrights Racine and Corneille, as well as Goethe, in their original languages. She was famed for her wit and intelligence and charm. Most of her friends were the Oxford generation known as "bright young things" - which includes Evelyn Waugh and Harold Acton. She was a first cousin to Winston Churchill. She was the crème de la crème and NOT the empty-headed tart shown in this tenth-rate series.

Complete nonsense. Diana Mitford never hated Paris. She spent time there in her youth and ended up living in France for 50 years after WWII. One only has to read her letters to understand. I hardly imagine her proudly introducing herself as Mosley’s mistress while his wife was still alive. She knew the high-society rules of her class. She was not as extravagant as Unity. Clearly they did not bother to do their homework before writing this.

Also I should have added that the title of this clip is wrong. There was never a Lady Diana Mitford. Diana was the daughter of Lord Redesdale, a Baronet, and therefore was “a Honorable” but not a “Lady” as the daughter of a Duke, Marquess or Earl. After her marriage with sir Oswald Mosley she was Diana, Lady Mosley, but never Lady Diana Mosley.

@@supernova7848 thanks for the information. I do not watch the show so I do not know who are Tommy and Lizzy. Even if this scene takes place after Lady Cynthia had died, I highly doubt that Diana introduced herself as Mosley’s mistress at a party, using the word “mistress” in public. These were simply not the social codes at the time. Looks more like scenarists use modern language and simply the story for the public to understand.

She was a very annoying person full of delusion. At either rate, her actual name address upon marrying her second husband was: The Hon. Lady Moseley. After he dropped dead it would had been The Hon. Diana, Lady Mosley. Her depictions here and in Peakey Blinders constantly mess up the title. Only daughters of dukes, earls and viscounts are Lady____ first name -- then last name. Her father was a baron. She was born an honourable. When she married a Baronet she became Lady Mosley. Only when the spouse dies does her first name get into the mix and it is before the title with a comma preceding the lady____ then the married name. Again when the character was introduced she was no longer a Mitford surname she was The Hon. Diana Guinness. She only became a lady marrying Oswald 3 years after she met him.
