The characters seem very autonomous and calm compared to the same characters in Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper. In the cavernous space of Poussin’s painting, the characters seem deliberately diminutive, out of scale, distant from each other and lost. To my eye, it is a beautiful painting precisely because it has something visually troubling that is symbolic of the spiritually troubling. In da Vinci’s scene there is drama. In Poussin’s scene there is an emptiness.

Thanks for that. Is this from series 1? I hope that you and the Fitz collaborate to get this and their extreme unction together from time to time. Fingers crossed you have managed to avoid a too scrubbed look. All the best
