Using such a mild spur is just raising your voice a little when you ask for something. It's not a punishment, it's an emphasis. She's being taught the proper way to use them and in the end Stevie may not need them at all.

I absolutely love this trainer! He is actually teaching her every minute. There are no wasted movements. When he was telling her to make the canter bigger to decrease the likelihood of Stevie breaking into the trot, I was like YES! It took me back 55yrs (omg, I am seriously old). I remember my trainer saying something similar when I was so scared to jump the bank coming out of the water. I would canter toward the water and then just fall apart. I would let my horse trot through the water, then Sunny would stop and look around at me and yawn. I refused to believe my trainer that if I would canter the water, Sunny would hold the canter to the bank. Let me tell you, she was right.
Great lesson. Love this fellow. Might think of taking Stevie to the biggest field you have and running her all out. Start at a canter then start to encourage her to RUN, Lean forward pump her sides with your legs and holler to encourage her to RUN for quite a ways. Watch a barrel racer running after the last barrel. Your doing this to let her know her motor can go faster. You're just letting her know she can lengthen her stride. Horse are like an accordions. They can have short or long strides. This is just a couple time thing running to see if it helps free her mind to something new. We are always wanting to go slow and relaxed for our horses but many a rider on a jump course will yell to the horse before a difficult jump. We have to up our energy to up theirs. She is a more whoa then go so don't think her mind will go crazy running her a few times. Check field for holes and safety and don't do it if Kate doesn't feel safe. Just an idea. Stevie is a million dollar horse with her very sweet nature except for her kicking out saying I don't want to. 😂 She will get over that if when she kicks out Kate starts to turn her in very very tight small circles right then. First to the right then to the left several times. Thats more work than cantering so after doing this several times she will quit kick out. Now many jumpers let their horse buck and kick out on the course. A jumping horse is a different breed you ask so much of them over those HUGE jumps they allow it because they don't want to stop that engine. But on cross country no time for kicking out when the spur is used. Wonderful lesson. Susan
