I'm not sure how I've missed this video - I thought I'd seen them all. I didn't realize how long you've had your scope; I assumed it was a fairly recent aquisition. This is a great introduction to the world of oscilloscopes. I can't believe you admitted to making a tiny guess in a previous video - lol, but I suppose that just highlights the need for the correct equipment in any given situation. Sometimes you just need a scope!

@Scrodingers Box Just wanted to say thankyou for making all these videos, There fantastic, Watching your Vids gave me a little confidence to go and at least try and repair the camshaft position sensor error on my car before going to a mechanic. I brought an automotive oscilloscope and went out with my laptop all motivated and kitted out to find and fix the fault. Off pops the engine cover I locate the Sensor and low and behold it had just come loose XD, Seriously the most anti climatic repair ever, In my head I could hear you saying " I know all you people commenting on this video would say do a physical check first" I chuckled to myself XD. still love the oscilloscope its a great bit of kit Almost forgot to say fixing (plugging it back in) also fixed the LPG system so big bonus !

Excellent video Matt, thank you! I would also like to add a benefit that I discoved recently. A scope reading is raw data, a scanner reading is the PCM's interpretation of the raw data. I had a Pacifica recently give me fits. Scan tool signal and scope signals were very different.

That’s correct. Anything from a scantool is from the PCM. It’s never directly from a component. And much of the data is interpreted - it’s not even the actual data. Reading in generic mode is the best way to limit to the actual sensor data but again- it’s still read from the PCM, not directly.

I saw a nice trick once for measuring amp draw without losing radio presets etc by breaking the circuit: loosen the battery clamp, place one lead on the battery terminal and one on the clamp and then carefully lift the clamp 'around' the lead on the terminal. The dvom then becomes part of the circuit - in series - while the circuit remains intact.

You got an amazing deal on that package, especially with the pressure transducers.

Michael Herbert Yes, when I was teaching myself the relative compression test I did notice changing the AC setting allowed much better resolution. In another video I will show how to do a relative compression test WITH ACTUAL NUMERICAL COMPRESSION (PSI) DATA for each cylinder's compression.

Michael Herbert BTW- I forgot to mention on your comment that you are a "professional and still never stopped learning". Your continued learning is exactly what makes you a professional, IMO. If you were to stop learning, I would say you also stop being a professional, if I am not of place to say.

You should use this scope in any diagnosis where a scope can be compaired to a non scope diagnosis. your viewers will and can purchase a much cheaper and older vantage scope for around $300.00 on eBay. I have seen these older versions out there a lot. I have a Launch scanner that was around $230.00. I have since upgraded to a verus pro d10 that I got from eBay for $800.00, it has a 4 channel scope and it definitely makes problems easier to figure out. like you say you can tell by the waveforms how thing are working. you are a great teacher. I learned from you how to determine what was causing my long term fuel trims to be so high, I watched other channels on the same subject and they really don't clarify like you do. just think of the money you will save and make having such a tool. I have diagnosed and fixed 3 problems with my Verus that would have cost me 3 times what I spent on my snap on scanner. keep up the good work.

9:48 I was wrong, Most cheap $10-$50 DVOM's refresh at about 4Hz-5Hz. They can sample at faster frequencies but only refresh the display at low frequencies. Just because a meter can sample 60Hz doesn't mean it will display at 60Hz. That's why meters display in averages. At 12:10 that's also not quite accurate if you are dealing with a lazy O2 sensor. Just because you see voltage and it seems like it is averaging doesn't mean it's a good O2. There is simply no replacement for an oscilloscope. I'm very happy you decided to add a legit oscope to your tool box. It's going to open up a lot of doors in cutting down diagnostic time and making more accurate diagnosis.

Thanks Devon. The speed of the DVOM is actually irrelevant and the 1Hz figure actually made for easier math so I would have probably used that for example purposes anyway. The whole point is it is useless for fast moving signals regardless. You can not imagine how much faster diagnosis is for me now. While I haven't run into situations where only a scope would make an accurate diagnosis since having it, I can say that every situation was much faster by far. I diagnosed a bad knock sensor today in literally seconds- it would have taken 20X longer to boot and set up my scan tool.

You got a great deal, and made the right call to get one too! Hate hearing about the guy selling equipment; that's hurts. Great channel and keep the good work.

douglas lee I definitely told him he should try teaching. I am not totally sure what his prognosis is (working in a medical research environment I am particularly conditioned to HIPPA) so I didn't go too much into it. But, Suffice it to say- I wouldn't want to change places with him.

I have finished a week ago to watch every scanner danner premium video and i then immediately buyed a 4 channel standard kit pico, as you pointed out there is no way one can see fast electricity flowing patterns without a scope. great demonstration , i remembered my brother's 97 grand marquis with idle issue i tried to test the iac motor with car battery and the motor start smooks without any rotation . recently i figured out why it doesn't rotate !! some motors works by a duty cycle . thanks for the video .

I bought a much simpler and cheaper single channel o-cope about 8 years back, it came in handy when I had to deal with an ABS problem on a car (MG ZT) with Hall Effect ABS sensors that was not covered by DIY level diagnostic tools. Using it I tracked the fault down to a faulty magnetic wheel bearing which would have been the last part I would have guessed if I was forced to result to parts swapping as this type of Bosch ABS was relatively new at the time. Re tracking parasitic current drain I found the fuse in most digital multi meters was too easy to blow as shorts too ground or leaking alternator diodes can be way above the 10 or 20 amps rating of most DMM fuses. As DC clamp DMM are pretty cheap now I bought a Uni-T UT203 which has 40 amp and 400amp DC ranges in the UK it cost under 25 pounds --- about 35 US dollars.

Very good video. One thing that your viewers need to know is the importance of training. You can have a huge investment in diagnostic tooling, but if you don"t know how to use the instrument properly, all is lost. I have been working on cars for the past 50+ years and have seen tremendous changes in the industry. In the 70's (1970's) we were at the infancy of emission controls and had very little knowledge or training on the subject. Eventually the auto parts industry realized that in order to sell replacement parts for these newer vehicles with all of the "new" electronic gadgetry, they needed a way to educate the shops that they serviced. They would have clinics set up on a weekly to monthly basis to educate us. Fast forward to today and we know have the internet to help out anyone who wants to try to repair their vehicle. I know that I am not alone in thanking you and every car nut that has a KZread channel that is trying to help us learn. Keep up the good fight...

Maybe though in the future your going to taught the virtues of a multi channel Oscilloscope for comparing cylinders and/or variable valve timing.great video.

there is a scantool now that will do the graphing in this case like the dvom's readout. It will check your scantool settings as well as it has a dvom built in that you can connect your probes like you have your dvom connected and graph the dc volts of the DVOM readout like the ocilliscope. This scantool will also test the starting system as well as the battery CCA's. So it has 3 seperate connections, the scantool cable, the dvom probes (that you can graph), and a battery test connection cable...all for $89.95 on Amazon. It is called an Autel 539b (make sure it has a "b" on the end because Autel makes a 539). There are quite a few youtube videos on it.

I realise that this is a pretty old video and that you had only just bought your scope at the time, but I thought I would just mention here so that others new to the amp probe and viewing this video, realise that it can also simply be used connected to a multimeter, for measuring non rapid events, such as the battery parasitic current draw test. But I agree that when connected to the scope the amp probe is absolutely brilliant for a multitude of tests.

Congrats on the new diagnostic swag... I won't deal with most Craig's List phantoms because they have a fascination with wanting to play butt darts with me(which is not covered by my health insurance policy)

Sample rate on a Fluke 87V DMM is four times per second for the display, 40 samples per second on the analog bar graph. Definitely not as fast as a scope, but pretty decent for most electrical diag on a 12 volt automotive electrical system. I've got a old two channel Fluke 97 50mhz Scopemeter which has a 25 meg sample per second sample rate. (25 million samples per second). It's more than adequate for automotive use.

Hey question, what are you using as a scan tool. I myself have a modis and I purchased it at a fair price. Just under a grand. So anyways keep up the great work and videos I truly enjoy them.

I'm curious about the usefulness of the inductive clamp to find which cylinder firing on older cars. Using a low amp clamp on a coil-on-plug design will do the same thing. Unless it's a carby. Does the inductive clamp have other uses?

Yes the injductive clamp has TONS of other uses. I use to measure current through the fuel pump and detect a bad commutator. I use it on COP iginition inputs. I use it for parasitic Amp draw.... Many others.

Awesome video man. Iv been struggling with buying a OBD2 based oscilloscope, or buying a stand alone oscilloscope. Watching your videos and diagnosis dans channel. The automotive oscilloscope seem to be more useful due to the reference information available. I work on heavy duty vehicles with a J1939 connection. I’m hoping these scan tools will be compatible with a OBD2 adapter to communicate with the ECM. These Cummins Engine require a program to look at CAN data and their isn’t much graphing available. The data update speed is also fairly slow. I’v ran into a CAN Bus issue and a oscilloscope will help me but I’m not sure a typical automotive oscilloscope will be able to connect to the ECM via J1939. Because their is no OBD2 connection. I believe the only method is a stand alone oscilloscope and manually probing what I need to diagnosis. I’ll be talking with a snap on dealer in about week to figure a solution. If anyone knows a good way to connect to the on board diagnostic system with J1939 protocol using a oscilloscope. Please reply to this comment! 😄 great video man. Defiantly made my mind up on getting a scope. Just gotta figure out some compatibility issues

There is actually no “obd” oscilloscope- just the same as there is no “OBD” DVOM or testlight. An oscilloscope just measures voltage- from whatever source you connect it to. If you are connecting it to an ALDL to look at CAN data you don’t needs an OBD connection for that. All a scope does is measure voltage from whatever source you connect it to whether is OBD2 power at pin 16 on a 2015 Mercedes or a ignition coil input on a 66 Chevy.

ooooooooo to bad you did not buy a Pico, I did and every channel have it's own ground. it was expensive and I am a diy but it is a lot of fun. Your channel is a lot of fun too and great diagnostic. By the way I guess the scope pay it self because the part changer and rate at a garage is expensive I guess they charge you for parts that there is no fault on. before I was a part changer my self but instead paying the rate at a garage that also a part changer it was much cheaper being a part changer my self. I drive high mileage cars so there is some diagnostic to do and helping friends with there cars too.

Having tried to read O2 sensor curves from a scanner, I have first hand verification of your remarks about refresh rate. Many people think this is a fault of the scanner, but it is really an effect of the communication rate with the PCM. My Dodge has a really slow data transfer rate, and the scanner can't do anything other than show a square wave. I have a generic oscilloscope but it's pretty clunky compared to a dedicated automotive labscope.

Very true Dave. I have definitely seen cars' PCMs with extremely slow refresh rates and in fact one of my scanners even recognizes cars as such and suggests to minimize certain PIDs or data requests on those vehicles. But also, I have seen some scantools which were indeed at fault because of their slow rates. I've tried some hand-held "live data" tools on my own car that were just worthless they were so slow, and we have seen the PCM is not at fault. The labscope is best way by far though. Even a horrendous lab scope will generally give great results for live data on any car.

Hello Mr.... is there a way you could show more if the the amp probe for amperage draw... on today's vehicles.... I know that the conventional way of doing amperage draw on vehicle equipped without electric throttle body's is by far the easiest.... remove negative and connect multi meter in series... Hopefully my back injury won't leave me like the gentleman you mentioned... I love this trade more than anything...

Jose Sifuentes Thanks Jose, I also hope you don't have to leave the trade- you sound a lot like the guy I bought the scope from in fact- he really loved it even after 20+ years. He even stated he probably would be in better condition if he learned diagnostics when he was younger because it was the wrenching, not the diagnostics that did his body in. Unfortunately, I won't be using the scope for showing how to do Diagnostics. It doesn't really fit the theme of the channel or fit with the majority of the viewership. I really recommend watching my good friend scannerdanner's channel for stuff like that- he has dozens of scope related videos.

tecnico Most definitely there are much cheaper scopes out there- but not for this complete kit. The amp clamp and transducers alone are worth over $500

I think its great you got a scope and I would hope that you do use it more on your channel. You got a steal of a deal on that scope. The scope with out anything but the leads it comes with is at less $500.00 the Amp probe $300.00. then the pressure Transducers $300.00 the ignition pickup leads are $145.00 Plus the other things. WHAT A DEAL

How do you research and find out about what type of voltage a certain component should be receiving? For example the IAC square wave on/off signal...how do you research and know that it should be a square wave? Is it just stuff you remember over the years or is there a certain repair manual that has this information for all the different electrical components in a vehicle and how they should read on a scope.

more often than not the service manual will give those figures but sometimes you just need a good positive control from a known good. a resource I often use for that is a database at picoscope.com.

I once watched this guy on KZread use some fancy scan tool software to graph fuel injector pulse width and piston compression (with the help of a transducer, of course) at the same time. Sort of the way you sometimes use your scan tool to graph rpm and fuel trim. He used both graphs to diagnose a timing problem. It turned out to be a timing belt that had been improperly replaced. I thought that was pretty cool. My question is , could you use your scope in the same way this guy used his fancy scan tool to also diagnose a timing problem?

Using the two channels you can either get traces for the cam and crank and see how they "match up", or you can match with either the cam or crank and a spark plug wire using the inductive probe, or using the fuel injector, or a coil if it's coil on plug and see that injector pulse or spark match with the crank or cam signal. All kinds of ways to do it!!!

Nice demonstration Matt. I would have thought the opposite Hum , seems illogical as Spock would say. Your 2% ers are not up to speed on you using a scope ? Interesting.... I find the visual affect of the scope in a vid quite definitive . ScannerDanner uses the scope feature only when absolutely needed as I assumed you would do. Paul uses the verus or vantage the majority of the time on voltage for a larger demonstration view. Look forward to all the ideas you can muster with the scope. 👍

Steve Rob Yeah I used to watch Danner and think "JHC- not the scope again" it was in every video almost, and in fact for a while I stopped watching him altogether because I never planned on getting a scope so what was the point? But now- I totally see how it makes diagnosis ridiculously fast and I watch him more now than I ever have lol.

Probably a vantage like I have. You can also consider a u-scope (micro pocket scope). I don’t think I’d delve into a 4 channel pico scope as a beginner model BUT at some point when your skills develop, you will want one!!

I can't afford (Not a trading mechanic) a scope like you've got, but I am into electronics & have an Chinese cheepo (Owon SDS 1102) scope. Could I use it to do some of the diagnostics on my own car you do. Obviously I wouldn't have the specific functionality your tool has (Inbuilt software). I would have to watch your videos to know what kind of signals etc to look for. Just watched one of your videos "Check engine codes", I got P0220 Throttle position, wonder when that will come up again.

So what happened to your Home Videos Playlists Channels Discussion About buttons? I used them for navigation and to keep tabs on the ever growing subscriptions?

Mike Pratali It is still there. I noticed on the iPad they seemed to change the format though. It's a terrible format but by clicking one of the icons in the top corner that looks like menu bars it brings it up.

Let’s not forget , when an oscilloscope measures a/c , it’s peak to peak and not a calculated rms value. If you measure your houses current with an oscilloscope, you will measure approximately 340 volts not 120vac rms. 1.414 times the rms value.

QUESTION: I thought that you already owned a PC-Based LabScope/Oscilloscope when you showed us that you had the "AutoEnginuity"?! Isn't this a combo Scan Tool/LabScope like the Snap-On Versus?! Please correct me, but there are so many Tools out here, that a DIY'er can get confused without proper explanation! Thank You for your time....

The vantage is strictly a digital scope ohm meter. Snap on produced this originally when they were producing the brick scanners. The brick scanners didn’t have graphing capability until its final years so snap on produced the vantage for testing until they eventually combined the two into the Modis. The sample rate on these are still pretty slow but certainly better than a dvom

Great deal on the snap-on Matt, i purchased one of those cheapo hantek scopes a little while ago, only $80 but does the job.

Tom N Yes no doubt for most every application that will work very well. I wonder if you can detect fuel injector pintle movement with that?

Caution and apology........... I typed these notes BEFORE reading the comments by the others. Devon and Randy Jones make the same points I make here, but they do it better.... But I'm posting the comment anyway.......... :) ____ Matt, What makes your channel SOOOOOOO special is not only your very superb skills, but even more than that, your personality and your ability to explain topics that might be difficult for some to comprehend. You really have a magnificent aura of energy mixed with humor and enthusiasm. I went to Electronics vocational school, many years before I started working on cars. So for me, the electrical concepts are actually easier to understand than many of the other aspects of the car, which are much easier for other people to understand. Voltmeters and O'scopes are second nature to me, but for many very excellent technicians they are one of the most difficult disciplines. For me, the lean/rich concept is something that I have to think VERY hard about, each time I'm paying attention to it. But for a lot of guys (and women), the rich/lean thing is effortless for them. So, everybody is different. Your explanations of the scope here are nearly as good as any I've come across for anybody less than a full E.E. Carry On.... btw........... Regarding the "typical" measurement interval (time) on a DMM (DVOM), the one second time you mentioned that Devon spoke of is probably pretty slow for all but the very cheapest handheld meters. My Fluke 87 Series V updates the analog bar graph 40 times per second (25 mS), and updates the digital display 4 times per second (250 mS). But that's a $400 meter. But anybody can sort of "test" the update reading of their meter by just putting it to the battery, do a snap throttle, and watch the digits change. On most meters the digits will change faster than the eye can read them. The meter is "grabbing" a voltage reading (in the background) more quickly than it changes the digital display (intentionally). Both of your digital meters were updating their display several times per second. But yep, as you point out, even a SLOW scope will measure 20 to 50 MILLION times per second. Yike's!

Ah, so this is where I learned so much about the DVOM. I've been regurgitating this information to all kinds of people that needed to know...or maybe even didn't care, oh well, education is in my heart, I have to teach. :)

You do NOT need an AMP CLAMP for parasitic draw measurements if you have this Vantage Pro tool, you can measure up to 10 Amps with the internal Amp feature of the Vantage Pro. You would need to disconnect one of the battery cables and hook up the tool in series though. I'm surprised you did not mention this in the video.

I don’t see any reason to ever update a scope honestly but you can update if desired at any time.

Yeah ive wanted a picoscope for along time. Waiting for a garage sale from someone that has no clue what it is for 10 buks. Great vid.

I got my 1008C until I can justify the cost of a more professional grade. Spent about $180 in all including the AMP clamp that is similar to that one. Both Hantek brands which are Chinese.

That will work just fine. My only regret is now that I have advanced my abilities, I really see the value of a 4 channel scope and in retrospect I would have just gone for that. But you can still do a ton of things even with just one channel. It’s funny how you will go from “I’ll never need a scope” to “I’ll never need more than 2 channels” to eventually “Are there 6 channel modes available?”

Schrodingers Box yeah, always happens. This puppy claims 8 channels but danner claims that 3-4 are true useable channels, otherwise the other channels share the same bandwidth but I dont know, I didn't see him try and back up his claim but who knows. Maybe hantek has updated his software and I will try it out and see as I learn.

+Hawaiian F150 Wow yeah I have to say being a mechanic does not seem to be very friendly to the spine. Almost everyone I have talked to who used to do this as a career has had serious back problems. Your DVOM actually looks like it's refreshing about 4 times per second. The sample rate and refresh rate are 2 different things. Sample rate = DVOM, Refresh rate = LCD display

Hey Matt !! I'm thinking of getting a scope so I'd like to know if you had 1K to spend would you go with the Vantage Pro or a Pico ??...it appears that the Vantage Pro is more "user friendly" but the Pico I believe is the Cadillac of scopes...the Pico "starter kit" looks like I'd have buy some extra accessories...thanks !!

Personally, for 1K i’d go vantage pro. But if I had $4K i’d do a 4 channel pico.

I think 4K is way out of my price range. What other accessories do you recommend ??...the one I'm looking at on Ebay basically just has the leads....$1,199.00 only used a few times and still has the protective film on the screen...The seller said after he bought it..."where are all data PIDS ??... !!!

You won't go wrong with the Vantage but man, as I've expanded on this front I realize I would have bought a Pico from the start. Hindsight 20/20 lol. You will definitely want a low amp probe- it is a must!! I also suggest a secondary ingition capacative pickup. I will be covering secondary ignition applications on my pay channel. Finally a good backprobe set and some small alligator clips- I use the Hantek ones because the plastic prevents crossing the needles by accident. I have a few other goodies like pressure sensors but really the standard leads, low amp probe and secondary pickup make up 99% of my accessory uses.

Oh one more thing- when you get accessories for Vantage make sure they are banana jacks- not the BNC connector like for Pico!!!!

Thanks Matt !!!...I don't think I'll buy those "Snap On" accessories.... who makes decent quality accessories...AES Wave ??...do I also need a 20:1 attenuator for measuring primary ignition and fuel injectors ??....oh, and BTW I'm going to go into the used O2 sensor business...all those perfectly good sensors that are changed by the "98 Percenters" I can buy them for pennies on the dollar and make a nice profit reselling them on Ebay...LOL !!!

i'm looking to buy a scope but price is excessive !! i can buy an electronics scope dual trace 20mhz! for $100 will it work??

I'm sure you could test the IAC motor with a cheap A4988.

real fixes real fast uses a tool called the lab scope. Is that just another name for an oscilloscope or is it a different kind of instrument?

I think that the signal/ driver for the IAC may be PWM. I've seen it before on a camshaft actuators solenoid.

Never used the modis (isn’t it Modus?) so I can’t say…. Isn’t modus a scantool instead of a scope though? I don’t even know for sure lol.

No- most scopes won't have the microamperage detection capability.

Hi, I'm in a daze as to what to buy that'll encompass all testing and programming procedures, I have been looking at snap on, Autel and Launch (Matco) but, I've came to realize that no one tool does everything.. But, I am chasing a condition where My cooling fans kicks on when the coolant temp goes above 100*F, I initially thought it was coolant temp sensor, I have since replaced the coolant temp sensor multiple times, still didn't fix it. I have tested continuity on the signal wire from the ECT to the PCM, it checks out. Then I thought the ECT circuit in the PCM is bad, I Replaced the PCM, still problem exists. What else can I do? What am I missing? And can a tool like this Oscilloscope help Me diagnose what is going on/causing this issue? 2005 Chevy Impala.

Start with the basics- What is the voltage drop across the sensor during the temperature curve?

@@SchrodingersBox It maintains a relatively steady voltage reading of about 1.3V until the coolant temp reaches above 100* then everything goes wacko.

@@nedunonnyp704 Then that would mean you have no voltage drop across the sensor. The sensor would be bad, there is no other explanation. Are you measuring voltage drop across the load? You can't possibly be.

@@SchrodingersBox This is a really Weird situation.. I mean 3 different Coolant Temp Sensors couldn't possibly be all bad. As you saw in the video I was measuring voltage drop across the Sensor. I believe it started out about 3V then drops to about 1.2V as you saw in the video. I believe If the coolant temp sensor is bad, It would report right away, it would not read accurately until >100*.. I haven't seen anything like this.

Holy sh*#bags just the transducers are more than $500. Fast sample rates are good.. I use the 4425 from Autonerdz.com and recently acquired a Zeus from snap on (great work time improvement but at a steep price (yikes). I'm able to use stuff from my Picoscope kit from Autonerdz for lt snap on zeus and my uscope from AESwave.com which has a budget pocket size 1 channel scan tool. Great informational video as I'm always watching stuff just to stay sharp as when doing it for hobby and helping relatives, some friends (free) I have to do my own continuing education. Never been to automotive school just started in army in early 90's, really basic stuff then when I got out mid 90's I worked on Class 8 semi trucks and trailers. Went and drove them for 13 1/2 yrs, had back surgery in late 09, went back over road and within 6 months was off road due to Dr nicking my Dura which is the area that surrounds the spinal cord and cord fluid. Dr tried to fix then started throwing lies once things got worse and wound up with bacterial meningitis for 2 1/2 months and permanent nerve condition which after going out of state and getting fixed I still have nerve issues that have made it impossible for me to work which the love for learning more about cars, diagnostics and troubleshooting came about and has stuck so I enjoy it..I help others as well often at no charge paying it forward. My gain, KNOWLEDGE! Have a great day!!

You can use that low amp clamp with a dvom.

rusco321 Yes that's very true- technically it just simply converts the magnetic field disturbance from the amperage into a DC signal. But it is still only really interpretable on a DVOM with a steady signal like that draw test.

Ok, now lets talk about setting scales, and sampling rates. Dose all automotive scopes come with preset library just in case you do not know what scales and time base to chose? And how do you what a good signal should look like, if you don't know what a bad one looks like? Was there really two shooters in the assassination of JFK?? Man! so many questions and not enough answers!

fivefortyeye540i No the majority of scopes do not "tell" you what the signal should look like- you need to do research to know what you should be looking for if you dont already know. However when you know what to look for, you will know what scales to start with and you can optimize from there. Lol as for JFK- only one scope was needed, thats all I know

There's one thing I disagree here on some models the battery cable are to big for the low amp prob and you didn't mention how to by pass that also you didn't show what to set up the scope on to measure amp draw with the low amp

DVOM if you have a good one like a fluke, snap on it samples 4 times per second. But then it averages the single. But your example of a 5 volt square wave reading 2.5 volts is only true if the on off time is a 50% duty cycle. If your on only 20% and off 80% you will have a display on the meter of more like 1.25volts. And for God sake use your vantage dvom meter/scope instead of those $10 volt meters!! LOL. Don't forget shop-stream connect is a free download for your Pc then you can store,build library's of wave forms,print etc. snapon diagnostic web site has that for free.
