Would love to see an updated video on digital modes, the modes themselves like js8, FT8, and various connection options, new to digital modes, and overview of the more popular digital modes and connection options would be great. A video targeting NEW hams who want to get started in digital, assume i know nothing about digital.

I never quite understood why 'faster' takes more bandwidth. Bandwidth is set by the highest frequency (SSB mode: BW=2 times Fmax/2), so in all the modes, slow and fastest, the highest beeps all have the same frequency. So what does it matter if they follow each other up quicker?

is the ic 705 one of these new gen radios that connects using a usb for data modes a la 7300 that was mentioned?

Yes, the IC-705 is Icom's newest portable all band, all mode radio. It's a full SDR and has a USB plug on it. This is a QRP radio and I would not recommend using it at home. This was built for hikes to the middle of nowhere.

@@DOCPSYCHOsince1968 Hate to jinx them but I hope so. The rest of the world is starting to catch up so it might be just about time for a new coach and new ideas? That's pretty hard on the best coaching team who have done a magnificent job. The proof is in the emulation by the other teams. The skill level of world rugby at the moment is so high that it seems like there is nowhere to go - then someone pulls out a new trick lol.

Good overview of digital modes today. I used to use AMTOR decades ago on HF. After being off HF for decades, AMTOR is gone. Is there a digital mode that has handshaking for perfect, error free communication like AMTOR ARQ? Is it still legal to use AMTOR today on the HF bands? I plan to get back on HF with an Icom 7610 after being inactive on HF for decades and I need to know what interface and software I need. Decades ago, I used an AEA CP-1 and a Commodore 64 computer. Today I’ll use a Windows or Mac computer. What hardware interface and software is needed to do the digital modes with an Icom 7610?

Thanks! I will pass your question onto Brian, the one giving the presentation. I haven't started adventuring into the digital modes yet. One mode that does look interesting to me is FT-8, so I plan to start there. 73 Jason / KM6FAK

Dave, the great thing about the 7610 is that all you need is the USB cable! The radio itself has the ability to do RTTY & PSK directly from the radio. Windows sets up a virtual com port for the radio control and also a “soundcard” in/out (part of the radio). As for software, there is a plethora of options both free to uses and paid solutions. With HF conditions no so great, the current digital mode is FT-8. It hears deep into the noise floor where angels fear to tread. Most software for amateur radio is written for windows. If you are running a MAC, you can do virtual or boot camp partition the hard drive to load windows onto the Mac Go to the 3 minute mark for the 7610, as I did a basic reference to that radio.

Bri Guy's Utoob Thanks for your response! The only concerns I had about the Icom 7610 were issues of possible display burn in from static long term images on the screen and heat sinks that may come off. I would also like a pretty quiet T/R relay sound for full break-in CW and possibly AMTOR ARQ (if I can establish contacts with the old handshaking AMTOR mode that had perfect error free copy. I’m trying tho determine which digital interface box is needed with the Icom 7610, either Rigblaster, Tigertronics, or another brand. I assume that type of interface box is needed between the Icom 7610 and the Windows computer. I could use a Windows computer for the digital modes, although I have both Windows and Mac computers. I’m not opposed to using paid software. Which software do you recommend? I’d also need to buy a power supply for the Icom 7610. I own a Astron RS-20M which is 16 amps continuous and 20 amps intermittent. I understand that a 23 amp power supply is needed. I think that’s a 23 amp continuous duty cycle power supply. Since my power supply is too small, I’ll need to determine which power supply to purchase.

Dave Borchard I do use the paid version of Ham Radio Deluxe. LCD Screens do not suffer burn in as the CRT’s did. You are the lucky one with a 7610. No interface box needed. It is all built in the radio. All that is required is to install the drivers for the radio on the computer, then plug in the USB cable from computer to radio. There will be some minor settings to address. There is probably a KZread video specifically on the setup of the 7610 and a windows computer .

Beware that operating FT8 it is very far from traditional ham radio activities. Before the onset of FT-8-style operations, real ham radio was considered a contact between two live human beings-- the only mediation being ham radio radios and of course the skill of the two operators using their radios. I'm very sorry to see the intrusion of FT-8-style operations because it leaves so much of the human element out of the exchanges. I know that these new operational modes have created a lot of contacts for a lot of people with limited antennas and limited power output. However by automating the process the human element is virtually eliminated once the operations get started. I'm glad ham radio is holding on somehow, but I am very very sorry to see this development come about.
