So true about long range...video will go long before control signals. Furthermore, 2 watts would provide little increase above 1, as there is not a linear relationship between power and signal strength. Thanks so much for this video, I've been kind of resisting elrs a bit because I haven't had any range problems, however, it's getting harder and harder to buy certain quads that aren't ELRS.
Great video. I have a Matek 405 flight controller with elrs built in and was struggling with connection. Your comment about the Matek target being DIY made me go back and actually read the manual. After updating the firmware, it works great! Thanks for all you do, especially for us noobs to elrs.

This really helps, just getting started.
13:21 Was idly listening from my office desk in my sign shop as an RC Newbie looking to outfit my FMS Fox 3000. Your first couple of lines was spot on! People in most help videos are speaking english but the nature of the craft has so many abbreviations, all a newbie can hope for is knowledge obtained by osmosis. FPV, ELRS, BNF, PWM, FJB, the list is endless. When I discovered people fly long range on auto pilot and use FPV I was thrilled. My heart started pounding as I was alerted to the reality that me, a professional power Mac user can join in the fun without using a windows platform, which is harder to me than flying without AS3X and Safe. ExpressLRS-Configurator-1.5.5.dmg had me from hello! Currently, I'm all Spektrum but I will be buying all my gear through your links because your video made my day!

Thanks for this. I have recently made the switch to ELRS, starting with the RadioMaster Ranger transmitter module, RadioMaster RP3 receiver, & the first of all five of my helicopters to get it is my Goblin RAW 420. Eventually I will put all of my helicopters onto ExpressLRS. I have been following their development since 2019, back when I first bought my RadioMaster TX16S Max Edition controller. Nearly four years later, & _this_ has come out & the ELRS devs have finally added support for helicopters is amazing. =^/.^=

You're welcome. It's definitely not for everyone and there are simpler options to be sure. What I like so much about ELRS is I can use it in everything: CRSF talks to flight controllers so Betaflight on quads, iNav on FPV fixed wing. It talks to the FBL I like to use so I can use it on helis. And it has PWM output options with telemetry, so I can use it on fixed wing for LOS. On top of that the receivers are fairly cheap.
Looking forward to watching the video when my replacement module comes in (the box had 2 barcodes - one said micro, the other said nano. Unfortunately the nano was in the box and I ordered/ need the micro)

ELRS is maturing nicely.
Small correction, the full sized ranger can go all the way up to 2W! It is more powerful (but it's useless for most people)
@RCVideoReviews
4 ай бұрын
Not out of the box and I don't show it because I don't want to be the one responsible for telling everybody how to violate part 15 rules. So it's not a correction. The device allows it, but the manufacturer correctly set it to 1w to comply with the law.
@FAB1150
4 ай бұрын
@@RCVideoReviewsoh I completely agree on you not showing how to circumvent the law, but it's a selling feature even if they never explicitly say it to not get their product banned. In their website they only say "default 100mW" under RF power output in the product specs of all three for the same reason, lol If it was intentional though I also agree it's not a correction

I've been flying LOS with ELRS for a while now and it's pretty rare to see Tpwr in the logs > 10mw. Every now and then a 50mw burst. 2w is just over the top and really not necessary unless you're doing some seriously long range and then you're going to have trackers, and some serious knowledge on video setups. So I figure at that point, you already know the hack. YT is a great teacher. Sometimes it's just better to leave certain things unsaid.
Nice!

I am going through your channel videos, it like eating an elephant. I thought you were going pretty fast then I realized I had the speed a 1.5... I used to code a bit back in the 1980s, compiling from a tape could take hours on a big VAX, prior to that you would insert punch cards all night on like a P-11 (before my time). Talk about your "this could take a long time guys" comment! Great video! Thanks a lot. I hear from others that when you use 1 watt or higher power you should always use an external power supply. Is that right?
@RCVideoReviews
Жыл бұрын
I cannot validate the question. Two points: 1) We're talking about radiated power, not electrical power. I don't believe it's a 1:1 correlation between radiated power and electrical power, but if it were 1:1 then: 2) 1000 milliwatts = 1 watt. W/V=A. So 1w/5v= 0.2a or WORSE: 2000milliwatts = 2 watts. 2w/5v = 0.4a I seriously doubt the pins in the JR bay would struggle *at all* with .4a. And I know the batteries in the Tx should be able to easily handle an incremental half amp. So personally--I doubt an external pack would be required. Finally, Radiomaster did not stipulate in their instructions that an external pack is necessary for 1w of transmit power.
For anyone shopping for a Ranger module, the biggest one, with the aluminum casing, will shed heat more quickly than the smaller version, that has a plastic casing. Just something to take note of.

I was flying all weekend in Florida. It was 95 degrees outside yesterday. Telemetry on the micro showed RQLY about 95% or higher, TPWR at 25mw 99% of the time with one or two spikes to 50mw. So I had superb LOS radio performance throughout the weekend with a legitimate heat test on the micro. That said, my TPWR was low the whole time. If your use case mandates a higher TPWR, the aluminum case might make sense.

Just an update to the thread... (not adding much to what RCVideoReviews already said, just getting back to my original comment) >The Power Output of the RC-Link, that is needed when flying with a Video RX/TX will never be anywhere near what is needed for the Video Link. I Don't fly long-range, so I can't speak to that, but at ELRS-150mW, the RC-Link is way, way, more powerful than my DJI-V2-1200mW. I can' not find a use for the ELRS 2-Watt Power Output, when I am using a Video Link. >If you need the full 2-Watts ELRS RC-Link, then you probably already know a lot more about radio than I do. To me, this question needs to be flipped: Why on earth would you use anything but ELRS?

The question on long range should be more about penetration which is a whole other ball game. There is so much that can be talked about on penetration…
@RCVideoReviews

The question on long range should be about video. Even at low power levels, ERLS is going to severely outfly most video tech without deploying some fairly advanced capabilities (antennas and trackers). When I flew long range, I kept RFLOS in mind so the farther I went, the higher I flew and that does not require penetration. I never saw a 3000ft tree, but I have seen a 3000ft mountain. Anything beyond 3 miles is going to quickly become much more of an issue about video than control link if using ELRS.
@KMProtectionServices

@@RCVideoReviews I have seen many lose radio link in the mountains before video. What you say is true but sometimes penetration on video vs transmitter work different. I think it can be very close in penetration situation which may cause the following: low video reception, and lost transmitter causing drone to drop usually making reception worse if falling further behind interference and then losing video completely. It may all happen so quick that you just see your drone drop... Hard to tell without actual penetration testing...

I never flew long range in a way that would compromise my control link. Don't even comprehend the notion and what you're describing is probably why the government limits this activity. In my experience flying long range, video was always the first to go. 100%.

@@RCVideoReviews Government does as they do... more rules and regulations and they never do anything good.... People will still do dumb stuff as they always have. There is a lot that can go wrong but under usual conditions video should go first. I like the Matek CRSF-PWM-C. It's 10 channels, but has voltage and current. If you can get by with just voltage, the CRSF-PWM-6 is pretty nice.
