Intro to CNC: FoxAlien 3018-SE Review and Setup (A GREAT Beginner CNC Machine!)

3D printing is an additive manufacturing process and has become one of the most popular ways for makers to create objects at home! However subtractive manufacturing methods are another great way to make parts out of wood, aluminum, and more!
One of the most popular methods of subtractive manufacturing is CNC Machining, where steppers motors are used to move a cutter through a raw block of material to create an object!
But how does CNC work and exactly how is it different from 3D printing? In this episode, we take a look at an intro to CNC Machining with help from the FoxAlien 3018-SE, a hobby CNC machine for your office!

Thanks for your review and suggestions. I will try our best to make a tutorial about how to generate the gcode in our manual. That is a pretty good idea.

I just assembled mine and look forward to using it. I have some experience generating STL files in Fusion 360 for 3D printing but have never done any CAM.

So far it’s been great! I think with the upgraded V2 hardware it will be even better. Would be very interested to see how that version handles aluminum! I still think that the dedicated controller and enclosure make it better than other 3018 machines I have seen.

You said it took 4 hours to make that, would you say it is safe to leave the room during those 4 hours or no?

What would be needed for the 2.5D carving of the example? I am an absolute beginner.

The machine can do it, but you would need software that can generate the G-Code. The two options I know of are MeshCAM and Fusion360, the latter of which is free. It should be possible to use G-Code generated by Fusion360 to control this machine, but it’s necessary to use the right processing/export options to generate the G-Code. Hopefully FoxAlien will be able to provide some insight on this soon, but I will also be sure to report back if I figure it out!

Did you ever see if this can mill aluminum or other soft metals?

This is a bit of a tricky question, since I received the V1 version of this machine, which doesn’t have the updated gantry to increase stiffness. However, this upgrade is now standard on the machines sold today. I have seen a few videos online where the 3018-SE is used to cut aluminum, but believe this was done with the V2. The V1 would have a tough time at one reasonable speed, but you should be okay if you pick up a V2.

The V1 of the machine can do wood and plastics. V2 (which is the only version currently available) should be able to mill aluminum with the 300W spindle upgrade.

Was about that much time, though I definitely took my time. V2 of the machine which is currently being sold is already partially assembled, so it should be much faster.

@@SuperMakeSomething I think he meant it took 4 hours to cut the part. I'm guessing this can't mill aluminum... Edit: I paused the video to comment right before you answered that.

Ah right that makes more sense that the question was about the cutting time. 😅 Since I did not have much time with the machine yet, I used settings that were very conservative. Likely it could be pushed to be a bit more and be fine. From my understanding, the V2 machine is a bit more rigid because it is designed to accommodate a 300W spindle upgrade, so I think that cut time could be cut down even further.

"if you want to outgrow it and cut other things like aluminum" as if 1) you didn't just state it could machine aluminum two seconds ago and 2) I'm not gonna mod that sumbitch to machine aluminum.

I believe you are referring to 1:58 where I talk about engraving letters. The machine is able to engrave letters into aluminum with engraving bits, but engraving is a very light pass versus something like cutting, which requires higher machine and spindle rigidity.
