    @philmccracken179

    No matter what happens to the batter, the next batter always bats. It’s not like cricket where you can continuously bat. A “walk” is a good thing for the offense because the batter reached base, which is ultimately the goal, and he didn’t get out. You try to score as much as you can before 3 outs are made. A walk let’s you go to first base, and you must to first, second and third base and back to home for the run to count

    Anna F A walk is when the batter doesn't strikeout nor hits a fair ball. The pitcher can walk the batter by his own accord but if the batter is hit by the pitch, that is an automatic walk, regardless who is on what base. So you don't want to walk with a runner on 3rd.

    The batter gets to go to first base, he cant be tagged out, if there is a runner on first he gets to go to 2nd base.The pitcher can intentional walk the batter or the batter doesnt swing at 4 pitches that are outside the strike zone this is called base on balls.

    If the batter gets three strikes, he is out. He can either get a strike by swinging and missing, or by not swinging at a ball that is in the strike zone. There is a third way to get a strike, and that is by fouling a ball off - but these only count as strikes if there are less than 2 strikes. If the batter already has two strikes, a foul ball doesn't mean anything - unless the foul ball is a foul tip - and is caught by the catcher. If the batter does not swing at a ball, and it is not in the strike zone, it is a "ball". If the batter gets four balls, he gets a walk. The batter gets to go to first base and become a runner without having hit the ball.

    For strike one and two, the catcher can drop a pitch and it can still be called a strike. For the third strike, the catcher does have to catch the ball to get the strikeout. If he drops the ball and there are no runners on first base, the batter can run, so the catcher can either pick up the ball and tag him out or throw the ball to first base. There are a few other scenarios he can run, but that's the most common.

    Technically the umpire can start calling balls if a pitcher takes more than like 12 seconds between pitches when nobody is on base, but it's almost never used. If you watch footage of games from 30 years ago, they went much quicker so there was never an issue, players are just much slower between pitches now. There have been experiments in the minor leagues with pitch clocks over the last few years, but baseball historically takes a very long time to change any rules.

    As a batter, you want to swing at good pitches. If you swing and miss, it's a strike. If you get three strikes, you are out, so you only want to swing at pitches you think you can hit. If the ball is way low/high or way outside/inside, it will be a ball anyway if you don't swing, so there is no point in swinging.

  • @willoughbykrenzteinburg

    @willoughbykrenzteinburg

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@jaspergillgannon4991 There is a strike zone in baseball. It is the width of home plate and goes from about the knees to the mid chest. There is an official definition, but different umpires will have slightly different zones. It is mostly common sense once you watch enough games. If a pitcher ball crosses the plate inside this strike zone, and the batter does not swing, it is still a strike. If the batter does not swing and the pitch is outside this zone, it is a ball. As I said before, if the batter gets three strikes, it is an out. If he does not swing at 4 balls (literal balls - as in outside the strike zone), his at bat is over and he gets to go to first. This is called a "base on balls" or a "walk". As far as scoring opportunities are concerned, a walk is the same thing as a single. A single being a hit that allows the batter to safely reach first base. So, there is a reward for not swinging at pitches outside the strike zone. Just realized you said you are NOW very familiar with the sport. I read it as NOT very familiar. Sorry if this was all common sense to you now.

    I'm here because mý new job requires I study about different sports including baseball. I cant understand the lecture during training and even when we watch the mlb play so here I am hoping for some understanding.

    Check my channel for the baseball playlist, it goes in order of the lessons, might make it easier. Good luck!

    You mention that foul balls are considered strikes, but I've heard this is not necessarily the case. "A batter can hit as many foul balls with two strikes (to infinity, although I don't think that has ever happened). The foul will count as a strike with less than two strikes, otherwise it will always be only strike two on a foul ball unless…He bunts foul he is called out if there’s already two strikes.The foul ball is caught in foul territory before hitting the ground, just like a pop fly it's an out.A foul tip if there is already two strikes, if the catcher catches the foul tip it’s strike three, out."

    Yes, you are correct. You can't strikeout on a foul ball, unless it has been bunted.

    Why is it called a strike?

    Good question, I had to look it up. Turns out it was originally only a strike if you swung and missed, or you attempted to 'strike' at the ball and missed it. Back then the pitcher's job was basically to throw the ball where the batter told him to (and get out of the way). It would be a much different game.

    Watch this video “Barry Bonds Pure Greatness”. He was by far the greatest player ever and that video shows his greatness. The last 5 minutes literally gives me goosebumps and tears.

    He didn’t want to switch the colors, because when the guy is black “he starts to look like the devil” and that “scares the younger demographic”... you see how that can be taken as problematic?
