Intro Bamboo Flute Lesson with Dora Wang

Dora Wang of the New Canadian Global Music Orchestra gives us an introductory lesson to the bamboo flute. She goes over embouchure, a simple scale, how to change your airstream to play in different octaves, and explains the different key flutes.
Dora started her musical journey with piano, but soon took on a variety of Chinese folk music instruments, including the bamboo flute (dizi). She also plays xiao and hulusi. When she came to Canada, she established an all-female mini-orchestra called "Melody of Bamboo Music".

    I know this is a very basic question but are there any "tips" you can provide for a beginner trying to make sound come out? Twice I have picked up my new Dizi and I made a sound but then I lost the sound and have not been able to figure out what I did right. Do I need to blow hard, soft, purse my lips, at an angle? Is it essential for the donkey skin to be installed? I am sure I will figure it out eventually but if there is any advice to be given I sure would be grateful to hear it. I will keep looking. I LOVE the sound of a Dizi. I have a left-handed BASS G which I am trying to learn how to play.

    She said that to play the higher notes you have to blow stronger and faster. If I tell you my tips based on the western traverse flute which may be similar, you have six or seven notes in average blow, then blow stronger for another set and again blow even stronger for the third set of notes. There can be also some changes in finger positions but the point is in different strength in blowing.

    The first 6 holes will get you most the way up the octave then you gotta skip the first hole and do some shinanagins with the after holes to bust up to the next octave. I have no idea about silver flute but these Chinese Dizi's all seem to have 6 finger holes. I guess pros/masters can blow 3 different octaves with mild blow/medium blow/and overblow and using the same holes but im not sure about that.

    for small dizi flute like the G key she is holding, a tight embouchure is used, for larger dizi flutes, do not need too tight embouchure, if you blow an octave higher you need to tighten the embouchure too

    Hello , this is not easy to understand on beginning, everything is difficult in bamboo transversal flutes as dizi(chinese) bansuri(indian) which i play, native sound is the lowest octave , if you blow stronger, you will be able to play second octave and often middle of third again stronger, but except if you have a professional grade flute, second and third will not be so pure.

  • @cassandrathomas6015

    @cassandrathomas6015

    You've probably figured this out already but for anyone else struggling this is all about increasing the speed of the air being blown across the whole. Essentially you are blowing stronger but people often mistake this just for pushing out more air. To make a fast air speed you need to tighten the whole in your lips, you can do this by pushing your lips forward. Also you need to push with your diaphragm, so pull your stomach in.
