  • @barrybach

Yeah, as other comments have mentioned, it's really another part of the voice (for me and a lot of other tenors for example, starts at around the Bb4 at the beginning of this song and onwards). It could be referred to as a belt, since you do have to "lean into the voice" (as Chelsea mentions at 2:43), but it's a different sensation than belting notes after the first passage (the ones around E4-A4 for guys like me). It is tricky to explain the feeling, but the best analogy I've found for me was the "crying baby" analogy. Essentially you pick a note that's right at the start of the second passage (where normal belting begins to feel uncomfortable to sing; mine was B4), and emulate a "waaaaa" sound that a crying baby would make (it may sound nasally and a tad over-compressed at first), and gradually adjust until the sound you're making resembles your lower belt, and feels really easy to make throat-wise (end result for me is being able to add easy vibrato to the note). When you can travel up and down your entire range on a single vowel (with this new range included) without breaking into your more airy sound (falsetto/classical head voice), you've got a pretty good grasp on things. It's definitely something that needs to be practiced and perfected, but it's awesome when you're able to do so. The next step then is to continue adjusting and make it as "chesty" sounding as possible, while still making it feel easy, which Urie does an incredible job at!

I was blown away by this song and looked around to see if any one was commenting on it. One thing I like is the first jump is very clean. The second has that C to B flat descent but the third has a little scoop and seems to get stronger. It feels like the scene from the movie, where you take a couple of steps back and jump, then do it again a bit higher, then try again and this time just blow it away. I think it really fits the visuals. The Idina Menzel/AURORA version is very different. Where Urie goes all out from the first seconds, Menzel builds slowly and doesn't open up all the way until well over a minute in. Thanks for this. I was singing this in my car all day today and trying to figure out what it was about those ascending intervals that work so well with his voice.

Maybe as a follow up compare Idina Menzel’s version and Taeyeon’s version with Urie’s. I think those are the three official Disney versions pre-release and each are different. Taeyeon’s is arranged pretty much identically but since she is female and it’s in Korean it has a different impact.

I realize why it strikes such a chord. The opening is like a literal clarion call, that is, like a military bugle call combined with a war cry. Then the drums kick in like a military charge. It is very martial and warlike. You can easily imagine a bugle doing the triple “into the unknown” refrain.

I agree on the balance between belt, high register and breathiness. I think that's what makes that song. I'm less impressed by the jumps and high notes (although I agree that they are exciting). I'm a baritone, and I can manage those. But I'm really impressed with how smoothly he can bounce between registers. He knows exactly where to switch for the effect and power he wants. My daughter does that, and if I weren't so proud of her, I'd be jealous. I also love how "clean" his vocals are, even when adding the airiness to the verses.

This song gets me so excited every time! The driving beat, Both versions vocals, the power of the lyrics and the movement of the melody. When the lyrics are hesitant, Brendon uses that more hesitant voice, and gets more powerful during the more certain lyrics and I’m just understanding that part better by watching this video and it makes me even more hyped! :D

Into The Unknown was a very mature Disney song. Watching the movie, I felt like it was more for us than the children. Even the elements of the film were darker, and this is A part of what made Brendon’s Performance of this song so powerful. In the first Frozen, it was super lighthearted. But, this Frozen film? There was even more depth to it than the first one.

I'm graduating this year and I'm doing this song for my choir senior showcase. I'm super excited because I'm going to do something with an acceptance letter and my cap and gown and make a little storyline out of it. If you're concerned about me hurting my voice don't worry, I've been doing high belts since middle school and I'm one of our highest Sopranos. My teacher has okayed me to do it too. I'm super excited!
