Michael used to come round to my flat in Oxford in the late 80s - I was a DJ and promoter and doing all the Acid House stuff. He was a lovely, beautiful, hilarious man, who never stopped teasing me about the fact I owned copie[s] of 'Dark Side Of The Moon' which he detested :) He loved the new electronica sounds of techno and acid, and made me listen to Pere Ubu, who he was particularly into. I still think of him all these years later, he was a very nice person to me, a rare individual. I never went to university. I'm still an audio engineer. Oddly enough, I bought a Hafler amp yesterday, which has resulted in this recent internet trawl for who Gerzon was - because to me he was a lovely bloke [who was clearly very ill, and many people wouldn't hang with him, simply because it was clear he was so very ill - this did not bother me in the least]. He kept going on about this stereo stuff. He had developed a way of effectively removing vocals from a stereo 2tk, which I was horribly nonplussed about at the time :/ and then he stopped coming round - he must have died. Beautiful, perfect recording and performance. Thank you very much for this presentation. I have always considered the human voice to be the greatest instrument. I am 70 years old and since I can remember I have always fought for the best sound in home amateur conditions. Multichanel recording & reproducing were beyond my means, in addition always the number of cables scared me. And I stay with "stereo, which still feels a bit like magic" for me. In 2018, thanks to Tom Benedict and MicBuilders, I constructed stereo microphones for recording sounds in the environment. I use Jecklin Disk to get the best results. I record nature's voices (mainly birds, bats, village sounds). I know how difficult it is to find the right position of the microphones in the room so that the room's acoustics do not spoil the recording. And I still have no courage to try to arrange recording a rehearsal for the choir - mainly because I would only disturb - that's what my wife says and I know she is right. I still miss Michael as does my wife, a fellow mathematician. I joined OUTRS in 1972 and arranged several OUTRS meetings with industry figures. I had many contacts through my father who was Rupert Neve's sales director at that time. Although I never understood the maths, Michael had a gift for communicating the concepts to a humble chemist. He was also very generous with his time. Walking past his window on numerous occasions (late at night after bidding good night to my then girl friend - now my wife of 41 years) I would ring the door bell of the Maths Institute Annexe and he would update me, at length, on his latest ideas. Looking back I still see these discussions as an outstanding priviledge. BTW I think the side/back of my head is visible at the right hand side of one of the OUTRS photos at 50 seconds into this video.

Thanks for this! As a young engineer at AMS (who purchased Calrec and Soundfield) I fixed Soundfield microphones for a while before moving on. I have never lost from that time the love I have for these exceptional devices (in various forms and productisations) and the minds behind it.

lt's so wild that it has taken technology until the mid 2010s to finally catch up with the amazing invention of the Sound Field microphones. And now they're indispensable for VR and Immersive media.

What a wonderfully-mixed piece of video / audio - appropriately, given the subject! The contemporary experiments in surround were quite extraordinarily good to listen to. And as well as ambisonics he published papers on what’s become known as the Gerzon array, a 2-mic technique which I recently used in a commercial project in a difficult acoustic and what an amazing stereo technique that is too. But it’s lovely to see photos of the early tetrahedral arrays. I am using ambisonic recording techniques now and it’s such a great time to be able to expert with these relatively easily (we don’t have to mess around with tape machines, either)! Great cast of audio experts in this video. Thank you.

I remember the demonstration system set up at AMS in Burnley when Calrec moved there. It used KEF 107 head units for the 8 speaker array and a large sub base. One recording in particular was Charles and Diana's wedding. The demo started in mono with a reedy Archbishop through stereo then quad and the crowd outside joined in until full 3D and suddenly you were in St Paul's.

This moved me. Thank you for making this.

The BBC used binaural audio in Doctor Who episode 'Knock Knock' (2017) - hope that helps.

I've got one and it _is_ amazing. Right now I'm most interested in its use for making live recordings that I can take back to the studio and extract my choice of "virtual" mics from the soundfield during mixdown to stereo, which still feels a bit like magic. It's nice to think, though, that I have the ability to do full surround should I wish to in the future using the recordings I have already made. Pure magic.

Does anyone know what make/model that black tetrahedral microphone is?

Soundfield SPS200 I think, although Rode bought the company and market it as the NT-SF1.

There are two models featured. The first and more well known (from it's design) is the SPS200. The second one which you can see at 4:33 is the ST450 (the one with the red shockmounts)

For such an event, wouldn't it be desirable to use an ambisonic microphone of a higher order? I've listened to first order recordings and think it becomes obvious that they have a very low spatial resolution.
