Into the Magic Shop | James Doty | Talks at Google

Ғылым және технология

Dr. James R. Doty is a professor in the Dept of Neurosurgery and the founder and director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education a.k.a CCARE, at Stanford School of Medicine.
In his book, “Into the Magic Shop - A neurosurgeon’s quest to discover the mysteries of the brain and secrets of the heart” Dr. Doty talks about his challenging childhood. When he was 12 years old, he wandered “Into a magic shop” and met a woman who saw the potential in him and taught him how to manifest his greatest desires through a series of techniques and meditative exercises. With her, he learnt a unique relationship between the brain and the heart that lead to incredible success and happiness in life.
Dr. Doty collaborates with scientists from a number of disciplines examining the neural bases for compassion and altruism. He is an inventor, entrepreneur and philanthropist. His work has been published in a variety of research journals.

BTS, a south korean boy band for "little girls" (I'm 29) made me discover "Demian" by Hermann Hesse because of their album "Wings" based on this book. They made me study Carl Gustave Jung's theories (to understand "Demian" and BTS' short films). Made me read a bunch of books to understand their music video and their lyrics, such as Haruki Murakami, Ursula Le Guinn, Alan Garner, Albert Camus, J.D. Salinger. They made me study the philosophy of F.Nietzsche. They made me watch the lessons about social justice by Michael Sandel (a political philosopher and professor at Harward University). They made me read about social studies and social stigma. Their hints become my spiritual guide through myself, because through reading this books and living some experiences I'm learning a lot about (and I'm working a lot on) myself. The title of their latest series of album "Love Yourself" is not for nothing. Through this journey, here I am. Even if I wasn't here for BTS, I wanted to read this book.

That's all very well. I have an enormous amount of compassion for my parents who are addicts and made our life hell with the level of distress and outrageous amount of constant domestic violence for MY ENTIRE LIFE (and even when I was in the womb -- not so cool kicking your pregnant wife in the belly) -- I have huge compassion with their histories and why they became what they are -- it does not mean they have the right to double and triple their misery by coming together for 40 years and fucking up their children, and not even ever saying sorry. -- Here I am, myself a researcher at university, spending tons of money, time, and effort on somehow or other healing myself, because my life is absolute shit. It would have been nice if they had started healing themselves, so I don't have the Hercules task of generation after generation of trauma to heal. It is just too much for one little body, one person. -- We can have compassion, but we also need to establish and maintain boundaries, and say no to people who act outrageously and hurt and harm others (by harming themselves). Saying no is a powerful gift, too.

Dear Dr Florence, You have had a really tough life start. I hope and pray you can now find a path of compassion that will lead you to your own healing and then to healing others. Blessings.

Not so sure that statement about the mayor of louisville KY is true. His compassion seems to be funneled to the wealthy white neighborhoods and further impoverishing the disempowered. such as building a brand new civic center in an upscale neighborhood while closing the public library that served the poorer parts of town. Sons of friends of mine who go to private school in Louisville KY with the children of the mayor say that the mayors kids have private security and are separated from the general population of students. Karen Armstrong, a religious scholar started the Compassion Project a few years ago and at that time Louisville was a sister city. After hearing this statement from James Doty I checked the website of the Compassion Project and it no longer lists Louisville as a participant. Great Book Dr. Doty I am so glad you wrote this. Namaste
