INTO GRIZZLY LAND | A 7 Day Teton Wilderness Experience | 4K Backpacking Documentary
7 Days in Wyoming's Teton Wilderness by foot to some of its remote parts. We saw many Grizzly bears, a black bear and tons of elk. A part from a packer camp we were alone. We start at Brookes Lake and head over Cub Creek Pass and toward the South Fork of the Buffalo. We cross Lake Creek and head to Ferry Lake where we head eastbound to Marston Pass. We then head to Younts Peak and Thorofare Mountain, the headwaters of the yellowstone river where bears change our route for us. We then restart by going up Woodard Canyon to the North fork of the Buffalo and then out to Wall Mountain for our final night. We walk the Buffalo Plateau on our way out to Bonneville Pass.

@NorthwestWanderer Awesome video! Did a 90 mile trek this summer through part of the country you traveled! Got a bunch of ideas for the Absarokas, if you guys are looking for more partners!
Great effort - thank you! And Joey is still out there making a rare appearance! Joey, miss your stuff - hope to see more. Happy trails, gents!
We also use "brush barriers" around our tent, but primarily to discourage animals from walking too close and damaging the tent by snagging a guy rope. Often our "barriers" are just twigs or branches leaned on or against the ropes to (hopefully) increase their visibility. We began doing this after our rain fly was torn (at Ferry Lake) by something snagging a guy while we were day hiking the two summits just north and northeast of the lake. This was during a 2017 backpacking trip that we took to see the eclipse, the "parting of the waters", S. Fork Yellowstone, some summits, etc. It is a beautiful area. We only saw one Grizzly.
Fantastic job Andrew. Your best yet! Great to see you and Joey hiking together, and who better to hike that country with!? Joey wasn't kidding on his Patreon when he said you got into bears. Great hike, nice work.

Superb adventure. And a hi ho to Joey. Best hiker in the world to have with you in the grizzly country. Thank you for sharing
As far as close encounters of animals, Teton was it. Worked there 08. They use trails dawn dusk. Closest Griz was 120 yards. Yellowstone griz 20 feet several times. Tooth saw them in meadows along Muddy Creek. Especially that big meadow. So far, none have killed me. From East KY TN. Black bear central. But walked into 7 out here. Like 5 to 25 feet. Teton Yosemite.
Nice shot of the American Dipper (24:10)! Their habitat is fast-moving mountain streams and waterfalls. Sometimes they even swim under the water. Cheers
Terrific viewing. Thanks Andrew and Joey.Always enjoy you work!

Did an awesome trip there 12-13 years ago. Great area to hike with the views and numerous unmarked outfitter trails. Nice to see HD video of some of the spots we covered. Camped in the meadow at 31:26:00 then popped up the the ridge to get a good look at Younts after dinner.
That area is so beautiful! Nice view of the Tetons.
Beyond great guys!!! Thank you!!!
We love your photography skills! Ditto our grizzly bears and Joey Coconato!

This is what backpacking is all about, beautiful scenery and lots of wildlife. I didn't realize the teton wilderness had so much alpine area, really beautiful.

We camped at Brooks Lake a couple of nights on our way into Yellowstone last August and drove up to DuNoir TH on our way out. Beautiful scenery and wildflowers! Enjoyed the incredible video of your trip!
Awesome bear footage. Its so weird that they eat so many things. For a minute the sow looked like it was just eating grass. They might have been digging bulbs up too.
I love your artistry!

Awesome adventure video. Just got back from a week in the Cloud Peak Wilderness with my teenage boys. Epic trip! Thanks for making this video and sharing. That’s a lot of bears in one area. Hope to be up in Montana in late August, maybe check out the Bob Marshall wilderness. I’m sure it will be hot but compared to Florida it should feel good. Hello to Joey. Thanks again.

Found your channel by chance and have been enjoying your content! good to see Joey, his channel disappeared thought he hung up his hiking boots.wonder where to check out his content now a days?
Does anyone know where they would put their food at the camp that was highlighted around an hour and 15 min? There weren't any trees so I was wondering how they'd elevate the food to keep it from critters. Thanks in advance. This is my first time watching this channel. It is very beautiful and educational.
Like the dual use beer cushions! Beer always makes up for any weight cutting. Hard to get sleep when you know bears are close by, especially grizzlies. Had a black bear stroll through my camp site in Yellowstone this week and stop to sniff my tent at sunset, not a good feeling. Not sure why the park put a backcountry site in the middle of a berry patch.

It’s funny, I was up in the Sawtooth Wilderness and didn’t see one bear nor any signs of bears, and that is far more remote than the Teton wilderness. I guess they like the grassier areas that have more berries/plants etc.

@@Ryanhelpmeunderstand the teton wilderness is different from grand teton. the teton wild is so much more wild than the sawtooth wild it vets itself, as you now know. sawtooths are cascade level play.

Just curious approximately how much weight did you lose in 7 days?
Thx again Andrew. How far do you estimate you were from the first set of four (5) grizzlies were you and again the sow and 2 cubs later? I think your camera is the one you zoomed for the pics. What were you using to zoom in on the grizzlies? Agreed, that one sow was acting strange. Appreciate your time.

Hello! The first set of bears we saw according to google maps measure tool we were ~4100 feet away (1.25km). The angry sow with the 2 cubs we bumped into 5 minutes later we were (when I filmed her) probably 500-700 feet? The closest she got, once she ran across the creek as we were leaving, was probably within around 400 feet but we weren't filming then - bear spray was out and ready! The camera is the Sony AX53 which IMO is the best camcorder out there right now especially for Image/Stabilization/Weight/Size/Price/Features

There is just nothing like THE Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem" in the Lower 48. I just sigh at the High Sierras, North Cascades, Canadian Rockies' fanboys who are hellbent on seeking hight routes, constant vertical relief, jut, elegant mountain landscapes filed under the "Swiss Alps" stereotype, and instant gratification hikers - I don't disagree with their love for such amazing views as I appreciate such as well - yet thinking such does not exist in abundance in the GYE = absolute nonsense x 1000. You gotta put on your courage pants, gear up, and be prepared & patient when backcountry hiking the GYE. I also suggest CDT hikers need to go off route and extend their thru hikes in order to enjoy the magic of the GYE. The GYE has it all, plus so much more. Countless unnamed waterfalls, some of the largest calderas on the planet, plenty of ooh and ahh vertical relief (The Winds, The Tetons, The Beartooths, Sunlight Basin and many rarely hiked sections of the mighty, intimidating Absarokas). The wildlife of GYE is unmatched by the Pacific Coast ranges on the Left Coast until BC and into the great North. The fascinating, geological DNA of the GYE Rockies is so overlooked by vertical relief hikers. The transition from granite to volcanic breccia peaks at the junction of Beartooth Highway (Pilot n Index Peak to Beartooth Plateau - literally an inverted mountain range) is a stunning marvel of geological, tectonic forces. There are high routes in the Absarokas that need perhaps an Andrew Shurka type of passion. I'm stunned he hasn't charted one yet. Andrew and his wife Lacy, among others, document hikes that frankly make Kraig Adams, as well as the peak bagging, thru hiking adventure types less interesting to watch as these videos are too often manicured and manufactured for superficial views, shameless, gear-sponsorship advertising, while portraying an unrealistic, detached perception of mountain hikes that are human-centric instead of the necessary inclusion of the greater flora and fauna kingdom essential to the wilderness experience. This video blew me away. Keep rocking the wilderness explorations Mr. Andrew. The dude you were hiking with, seen some of his videos as well - good stuff too. But you're on a different level.
When you camp out somewhere like you were near the top of wall mountain. Where do you put your food? Didn't see a tree for miles but didn't see a lot of bears in that area.. let me know how you handle those situations...thx
