    As a Native Indigenous to the Americas I cry whenever I see a Haka being performed because I can relate to what it means to the people of the culture; whether I can understand the language or not.

    Agreed, I was procrastinating writing a paper and the wedding video popped up and all of the sudden there were tears falling down my face and I didn't even know why. I had no idea what they words meant but I was so moved by it all. It was so beautiful just to get a glimpse of just a part the culture.

    This is great. The sad thing for me is, i grew up in the 1970's in Wellington NZ. In those days, Maori culture was not seen as a great thing, Maori's in general in the 1970's had low self esteem and were the butt of racist jokes, like Irish jokes told by English people. I am white, but some of best friends back then were Maori. I almost had a Maori girl friend, but i was to shy. I left NZ in 1989 and i have lived in the UK ever since. Now i look at how NZ has grown and Maori culture is seen as a way of spirituality, wisdom, and family values. I am so happy that Maori's are proud to be Maori, and they have much to teach the materialistic western mind set. Also the extended family, In Maori is the Whanau, is so important. The Western countries suffer much as we live mainly in nuclear families. The knowledge of our elders is thrown away when we put them in old peoples homes.

    tablatom I would love to learn what made the shift. You can pm me or whatever. I'd love to hear what made that shift, both in maori culture and the prevailing white culture around them.

    Good question Kevin. I don't know, but when i visit NZ i feel the difference. Watch All black videos from the 70's. They score a try, but don't really show much joy about it. For a long time now thats not the case. Maybe its that NZ has become even more multicultural, lots of Pacific islanders, Asians. As far as i remember people of European decent were in the majority by far up to the 80's. And maybe it took time for Maori people to recover from being crushed by the English in the 19th century. I believe the world in general has become a better place for more people, as we wake up that we are all the same. Still there are barriers to break, and the powers that be love to "divide and rule" but i see "oneness" in all peoples becoming stronger. But hey, i could be completely wrong about all of the above LOL.

  • @RedSky-vf8bf

    That's great and all. But shouldn't you be more concerned about how your white compatriots currently have low self-esteem (white guilt) and are the butt of racist jokes and everything wrong with the world is saddled on the white man's shoulders? We *don't* live in nuclear families, 35% of whites are raising kids with single parents. The Maori understand that single parenthood is a terrible idea, hence their family values. Maybe we should appropriate some of Maori culture to get our shit together?

  • @soulsearchtarot

    @soulsearchtarot

    tablatom, the world as a whole has in the past 40 years become more tolerant, inclusive and less racist. Of course there will always be fringe groups but the general consensus is that we are one. I agree with you about extended families. I immigrated to the US when I was a kid with my nuclear family and unlike my cousins back home, never got the chance to spend a childhood near my grandparent's warmth and knowledge and wisdom. They did and when you put us together you can see the difference in mindset. They grew to be much wiser at an earlier age than us. It is one of the things I hated most about being "ripped" off of my homeland; missing my extended family. It is so important to have one and to live among people of different age groups - that intergenerational connection which bestows so much humanity and spirituality. And I am from a small south east European nation. Sadly the extended family is losing its grip there now with the rapid development of the country. But, I completely understand you. Blessings to you and this lovely couple.

    I was born in the 70s in AKL and Maori culture and Te Reo were a normal part of schooling. It was also the decade when the Treaty of Waitangi was recognised again and manufacturing jobs, meat works etc were shutting down in rural towns so rural people people were moving to the cities and unemployment was high. It suddenly turned into the decade of dawn raids and the typical 'blame someone else except the government' era.

    To be honest I think I'm jealous of the Maori. My ancestors came off a boats to a place they didn't want to be. So much was lost in those dark times. But seeing the Maori with such a rich an powerful culture makes me wonder. What where my ancestors like? Were they warriors? Hunters? Farmers? This video, and several others, have lit a fire in me to find my roots and learn of others cultures as well.

I didn’t know what they were saying at the time (but since found out the translation) and yet I was moved. Its our cultures to remember our ancestors and our connection to the earth. I've been looking up so many tribal songs and dances around the earth to see how many keep such beliefs alive. Tribal cultures are the best. Wish we could all be able to celebrate things like that in our societies not only a select few. I have Scottish, African and Blackfoot ancestory. All which I feel are lost. If I could have a wedding. I would wish to mixed them together in honor to those before me who made me.. Me.
